My son's computer was heavily infected with spyware, malware, trojans, etc. I've been trying to clean it for more than a week but one or two buggers seem to crawl back in somehow on the next reboot.

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Here are my files:

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

You've got at least two bugs in the machine.

BKDR_SDBOT.BSS

trojan.ircbounce

The first bug is a "keylogger" and an "information stealer".

Anything stored on the machine, or typed on the machine (passwords, pin numbers, etc.) may have been compromised.

After we clean up the machine, please take whatever steps you deem necessary to mitigate this possible loss of confidential information.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Now, please go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit (or click OK)

In the Name column in the next screen look for:

HexadecimaRepresentation

it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\Edit.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Task manager] taskmngr.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Task manager] taskmngr.exe

O23 - Service: hexadecimal (HexadecimaRepresentation) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\Edit.exe

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of these noted file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\windows\edit.exe <— file

taskmngr.exe <— file
(use windows explorer to find.Be sure the file you delete matches this name exactly!!!)

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

Please try at least the first online virus scan in this list before posting another log file:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Bitdefender

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.
Dear Micah

Thanks a lot for your help!! :D

I followed your instructions but came across these differences:
1. Microsoft Antispyware was not on the taskbar (and not in taskmanager)
2. edit.exe was not found to be running
3. file edit.exe was not found
4. file taskmngr.exe was not found.

It could be that some of these changes were brought about by AdwareAlert which I downloaded and ran after positing my message. Then I did everything as close as possible to yoiur instructions and it seems that the annoying popups are gone   .

However when I ran Avast at the end it reported Win32-SDBot-g2 which it said it deleted.

Here are the log files after reboot as instructed…

Excellent work!!!

I see nothing left that requires your attention.

GOD bless you, Sir!!!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
