I am trying to remove the blue LOP tool bar and the LOP search tabs on my browser tool bar. I ran ad-ware; sbybot and spyware doctor but non of them is able to detect and remove this menace. Below are my hijack logs:

Hello fsoliman and welcome to TomCoyote forum. It looks to me like MessengerPlus (nothing to do with MSNIM or Microsoft) was downloaded along with the LOP sponsor and perhaps someone removed MessengerPlus hoping to get rid of LOP. If this is the case, then do this:

1) Download MessengerPlus just as it was done before then follow these directions:

You have a LOP infection that often comes together with Messenger Plus. To remove it we will try the simple way first.

1. Go to Add/Remove programs. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

2. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

3. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

4. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

5. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, restart your computer and, hopefully voila one nasty infection is gone.

____________________________________________________________________

If this does not remove the LOP toolbar, then use this link:
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/lopremover.exe Download and run this lopremover.

Let's do a good cleanup, please follow these directions:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.
I see you have them, please make sure Ad-aware is 1.06, Spybot 1.04 that they are updated and configured as in the link and run again. Thanks.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Run CCleaner but do not use the registry cleaner unless you backup the registry first as prompted for safety. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with the Ewido scan log this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.
We may have a little LOP cleanup left to do.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks for your help. I tried to remove messenger plus before therefore I could remove again. I have done everything as instructed however the problem still persists. Here are my HJL as well as my ewido logs. Just a note when I run Spybot, it always identified BACKWEB LITE as an item. In the past whenever I removed it cause problems with some programs not updating. What do you think? I should I go ahead and remove it?

Hello, Yes this LOP piece of carp** can be hard to remove. These are some nice folks to set things up so most unsuspecting users will get this infection. I want to be sure that you did try the uninstaller also:
If this does not remove the LOP toolbar, then use this link:
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/lopremover.exe Download and run this lopremover.

Here is some additional information with about LOP and some ideas that might help at Sandi's Site.
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-2034.html
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/43.html#removal
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/data/lop.htm
I see McAfee is your AV software and they offer a manual removal in the above link you may try. If they ask you to edit the registry make sure you back it up before doing so.

I rarely have had a problem with either the MessengerPlus uninstallment instructions or the Uninstaller removing LOP. Make sure you followed those instructions carefully. I will continue to look and if I find any additional removal methods I will post them for you right away. If you have success with any of the techniques, please let me know so I can stop looking.

BACKWEB LITE: First keep in mind that Spybot places anything in removes in a recovery area and items can be put back if a mistake is ever made. That having been said, you are correct that certain legitimate products use BACKWEB LITE to check for automatic updates, like HP, Logitech etc. I usually remove it from any software I download and do the updates manually which in my case winds up being never unless the item in question starts acting up. I will have to allow you to make this call. Why not move the item to recovery and let it set there for a few weeks to see if it causes any issues with the sponsor program? I would make sure under "Main Settings" in Spybot that all of the "Create Backups" are checked.

Your HJT log:

I could be wrong, but seeing this item: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "\" /WinStart still in the log makes me think the uninstall process failed? You might wish to try it again.

You will need to turn off Microsoft AntiSpyware and Spyware Doctor for HJT to work, remember to start it again later for your realtime protection:
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).

Spyware Doctor: Turn this one off also.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.dzgbwjhmhbzlgpemhirkz.com/ZicbX…pa6xDG9BI4.html
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "\" /WinStart
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [objloud] C:\DOCUME~1\Dad\APPLIC~1\MOVEAT~1\coalheart.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS~1\Dad\APPLIC~1\MOVEAT~1\coalheart.exe >>> file It is hard to tell what to delete, this folder MOVEAT~1 may be part of the infection. Take a hard look at it to see if you can tell.

Locate C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and open it. Delete the contents of the folder (NOT THE FOLDER) if there are many choose Edit then Select all then Delete. You may not be able to remove them all, don't be concerned unless any have the name of the items we need to remove. Here is some information about the Prefetch for you:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

Once you get rid of the LOP toolbar, then we may have to use HJT to remove that R1 line again. I'll need a new HJT log at that time. Keep me posted with your progress.

Whoa…that is good news. :) I did some searching yesterday and located some information. I also found out that Microsoft is aquiring MessengerPlus and I am sure they will not include C2Media Sponsor which is the LOP in the download. Here, you can read about it: http://www.msgplus.net/news.php We still need to remove the line from your HJT log but it should remove easily now. If it does not, then remove it in safe mode.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://xgyrahvkutwaxwq.net/ToBUYm0iWRGN9jv…oFkXWpf98fE.jpg

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Because this junk often gets into the System Restore backups files you should purge them which means turn them off, then reboot and turn them back on like this:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

The balance of the log is clean, so once the R1 LOP line is gone you will be good to go. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
