Hello Paul and welcome to TomCoyote forum. You do have at least one trojan: http://castlecops.com/startuplist-8490.html Please review the information about the trojan so you can repair any damage done by it, and a nasty DPF hostile Active X onboard but I am not sure if that is causing your issues. We'll clean you up and see what happens. If it does not fix the problem, uninstalling and reinstalling the software may be in order, or at least contacting Canon tech support for their feedback.

If you are not being helped elsewhere and still need help, please do this in the posted order:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair. I see you have Spybot, I want to make sure we have the newest configured software run along with Ad-aware. Thanks.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Open Task Manager and end task on this item: C:\WINNT\system32\mmc.exe
SpybotSD TeaTimer will block the change we must make, use this information to turn it off until we are done:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

***the scans may have removed some items***

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\Blank.htm
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/260384c438cbf6…ip/RdxIE601.cab
Netster

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINNT\system32\mmc.exe >>> file

7) Run CCleaner but do not use the registry cleaner unless you backup the registry first as prompted for safety. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with the Ewido scan results in this same thread and any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instructions:

I must thank you for your very informed advice and quick response. I will be making a little donation. to this site. I do have a question. All comments about mmc.exe: Microsoft Management Console - this is normal in Windows 2000 and XP, should be located in system32. It is used by several snap-ins, such as the defrag console, the user management console, etc. How did you know or how can you know if this is a real attach or business as usual
i have been following your instructions when installed ewido isactiveguard:RegOpenKeyEx fail 5.0 should i be unhappy
Are you saying it will not install? Try these instructions:
Ewido trojan scanner: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread.

  7. I rarely have any any issues with Ewido but mostly use it on WindowsXp. Did you have any issuesd running Spybot or Ad-aware? What did you find out about this item: C:\WINNT\system32\mmc.exe? Thanks
Keep me posted, we can try another scan like Microsoft AntiSpyware if you wish. If this item is not a trojan: C:\WINNT\system32\mmc.exe then your only real issue was the hostile ActiveX which is adware and should not be causing your issue and you might want to look at the software or discuss it with Canon tech support as I suggested earlier?
All other apps loaded happy…. installed ewido but gave the message=isactiveguard:RegOpenKeyEx fail 5.0 re-installed isactiveguard:RegOpenKeyEx fail 5.0 have not run this app will do now
Yep…they are both great "freeware" programs I have been using for many years. Both are starting to get more aggressive and are removing tougher and tougher malware. They both do a lot more than just remove cookies so some time spent viewing the tutorials will reward you well.

I am interested in if you wrote down the exact error message you are getting from MultiPASS?

At this link: http://www.usa.canon.com/html/conCprServic…00&modelid=6620
I located a toll free number: [removed]
Don't know if you can view this information but when I searched for:
MultiPASS\mpservic.exe fails to load a lot of links showed up.

http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controlle…x=29&Submit.y=5

Thanks
