Hi all.
I'm posting my hjt's log after having the PC infected from – don't know what – and having already formatted a partition and reinstalled XP. The problem arose after using emule without precaution: after some day all the activities slowed down while the task manager showed a 100% usage of the cpu.
After reinstalling the OS all seemed normal, but today the problems came back with same symptons :\ .
Thanks from now for any kind of help
kindly Sotantar

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

A word of caution.

At least one of the files on the machine is a worm that allows others access to the machine via the Internet.

Any confidential information stored on the machine may have been compromised.

If you have the time, try these free online virus scans:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.
Thanks, I'll work it out as soon as I'll be at home, just a question: do you think that the SSL connection are still secure under this situation or the worm  could be able to get info even by this protocol connection? Thanks once more :wavey: Sotantar
As long as the worm is active on the machine, I would play it safe and consider that anything on your machine was, is, or could be compromised.
I followed your hints and run a good AV sw three times. It found a problem in the MBR and 19! virus/worms. Now only one seem still active. I'll try again to clean it out, if you have time to look to this new log it will be wonderful.
Thanks again for your time

I'm trying, but I cannot locate the file FILES.exe nor in the file system nor tru the files search . I'm showing the hidden files but… !#@!§ it doesn't work the same. I really don't know how to look for it. In any case, now the log seem nice altough the CPU performance is still a bit dizzy . Thanks once more. Today I'm leaving with my family and coming back on aug 5. I really hope we should definitively fix it then.
Have a great time -
Sotantar

The log looks good this time around!!!

There are a few "optional" fixes you can try to see if the CPU doesn't come back to normal.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Programmi\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Programmi\File comuni\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Programmi\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Then click "Fix checked" and reboot.

I have had people tell me this helps the CPU performance.

You may have to check occaisionally because the 1st two items in that list can return if you use Realplayer or the Quicktime player either in or outside of IE.

If they return, just "fix" them with Hijack This! again and reboot. I don't know of any way to make them stay away permanantly other than to uninstall Realplayer and Quicktime.

I wouldn't worry about the "FILES.exe". As long as it's not in your log file, and you can't find it, it can't be a threat.

Looks like you're "good to go".

Have a safe, and blessed vacation!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
