Good morning,
recently before going away for a 2 week business trip I let a teenager use my Computer. When I returned it was full of naste stuff (apache.exe, worm fatso and files that I did not recognize. For the past 3 days I have been cleaning it up and hope that it is now all clear. At leat that is what Spy subtract says. I do not trust it completly since I did have before false negative reports and hope somebody knowledgable can look at my log and advise.
Many thanks

Thank you Micah,

Trend Micro indicated that I was all clean, etrust security for some reason did not load, but Panda found a few nasty files and finally cleaned them after a fee was paid. This took most of the day. Here is now the new log.
Again thank you very much!!

I'm glad the scans found some things. We recommend them because they find and kill things that Hijack This! doesn't see sometimes.

I know they take time, but I think it's worth it just to be sure we get your system as clean as we can.

Panda found a few nasty files and finally cleaned them after a fee was paid.

This is news to me!!! The last time I ran their scan, it was totally "free", detection AND removal.

Now for the "bad news"…. :(

The worm I mentioned is still there. <_<

So we have just a little more work to do.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft IIS] C:\WINNT\system32\syshost.exe
(This is the aforementioned worm)

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/28d06f440629ff…ip/RdxIE601.cab

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

c:\winnt\system32\syshost.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Thanks for staying with me.
After rebooting in the safe mode I did not find syshost.exe in the C:\winnt\system32\ direcory. I conirmed that my settings were show hidden files. I also run a search for file to make sure it was not in another directory and did not find it. Looking at the log it seems to be gone. Am I out of the woods??

Regards Lutra

No more worm!!! :D

Probably should create a clean restore point now.

Go to:

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore

And create a restore point.

I am pleased the forums at TomCoyote.org have been of assistance.

GOD bless!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
