I taped the command you wrote and then, when I did a scan with HijackThis, there was no more "O23 - Service: svchost.exe (moto) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)". :)

Unfortunatelly, it's still slow. :(

Do you know what program this is?

Lets try this:

click Start> Run> type in Cleanmgr. Tap enter and select C: to clean.


Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

PDF Writer Pro is a program to create .pdf, but it was a trial version that was out of date. I uninstalled it.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pdfw] C:\Program Files\Amic Utilities\PDF Writer Pro\pdfwload.exe

Optional. Not needed at startup.

O4 - Startup: OpenOffice.org 1.1.4.lnk = C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org1.1.4\program\quickstart.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Once again, my computer takes time to run programs, but I think there is a slightly improvement or maybe, I got used to wait…

Otherwise, I have a question, that I guess, might sound like a newbie question, but when I press ctrl+Alt+Del to access Task Manager, I got a message saying that "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator". How do I do to enable it?

Click Start, Run and type this command exactly as given below: (better - Copy and paste)

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD




You need to update both Windows XP and Internet Explorere as they are both well behind in updates. They are both missing Service Pack 1 which is leaving you open to all kinds of problems.


Service Pack 1 for XP

Before downloading, I wanted to know, if it's necessary to download the service pack for IE as I never use it, but use Firefox instead. Thanks for task manager, it works now :thumbup:

I would update IE also.
Before the SP 1 update, lets do this.



Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Hi LDTate,

When I turned on my computer this morning, I got many alerts from McAfee saying that my computer was infected by viruses, but they were all deleted by McAfee. All the viruses were located in C:\System Volume Information\_restore{… I did a complete scanning and the virus Generic.Downloader.v was found. After that, I did what you told me and removed the previous Restore Points. Until now, I haven't had any new problem since I removed the Restore Points, but my computer is still running slow.

I installed the three programs, but is it not bad to have two anti-spyware running in the same time? Do they not interfere with each other ?

but is it not bad to have two anti-spyware running in the same time? Do they not interfere with each other ?

Yes and you're running 3. If your mcafee is paid for, then I'd keep it and remove the others. That should also help speed things up.

Those programs you downloaded, SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster along with Ad-Aware and SpyBot will do the job. SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster run in the background so you don't need to do anything other then updating them once a week. Ad-Aware and SpyBot, I usually run once a week, updating them at the same time.

Ok, I'll uninstall the others programs, but I have another question. When I want to protect my connection with the internet connection firewall from Windows, I get a message saying that "an error occured while Internet Sharing Connection was being enabled. The specified service does not exist as an installed service." How can I do to install it?

Good news! I think I found out the reason why my computer runs slow. I guess it doesn't have enough RAM, as if I turn off all programs (including McAfee,spywareguard, zone alarm), then it runs much faster. My computer is several years old now and it looks like the actual program asked more than my computer's capacity. Anyway, beside this slowness, my computer behaves good. At least, I don't have viruses anymore and can surf safely. THANKS a lot for all your help :) :thumbup: Alex555 PS: I'll let you know if something breaks out. :wtf:
