Blocked Cookies?

I keep getting "blocked cookie" messages on certain sites (e.g. Hotmail). My security settings allow cookies and are the same as those on my laptop, which doesn't have this problem. Do I have some malware here?

Hello Mathusalah, Welcome to the forum.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Trend found nothing
Panda would not instal/run
eTrust fround 2 files called java_byte_verify_exploit which it could not clean. I can't find these files om my hard drive, they don't show up with the "hidden files" option off either.

Computer behaviour: mostly stable, I get occasional error messages stating that a particular memory location can't be written to. Windows explorer usually re-sets after this message.

Otherwise, my only concern is the original topic of this thread: some websites refusing to display or continue because cookies are blocked, even if i lower all security settings to the absolute minimum. No security has been changed to prompt the start of this behaviour, and I have been using all pf the sites (ie hotmail) for some time without earlier problems. The only thing I could think of was a browser hijack of some kind.

Thanks
I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Optional Fixes. These are resource hogs and not needed at startup.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Sorry for the delay, been away for a few days

Done all except deleting MultiUserRes, I know what this application is and I have been using it for a long time with no adverse effects.

Other than the persistant (inaccurate) reports of cookie blocking, the computer is behaving fine.

Done all except deleting MultiUserRes, I know what this application is and I have been using it for a long time with no adverse effects.

Can you tell me what this program is? I couldn't find any information on it.

Are you saying you don't want to block cookies?
MultiUserRes is short for multiple user resolutions. Basically this is a family PC where I use a high resolution (therefore smallish icons/text) while other family members prefer larger icons/text. We all have our own logon IDs and the command-line application MultiUserRes is set to run at startup for each user's preferences and sets the resolution as appropriate.

You can find it at http://www.softwareanalysis.com/

It even works with fast user switching on XP!

I use Iconoid to set relatve icon positions so the constantly changing resolution doesn't interfere with preferred desktop layouts. http://www.sillysot.com/

The cookie problem only seems to affect certain sites (Hotmail being my problem, a few shopping sites for other family members) and is something which has only recently developed. No security setings have been changed in either IE, my software firewall or my network router's hardware firewall, but these sites are displaying "blocked cookie" messages and therefore not allowing access. Being a family PC, I don't know what, if anything, may have been accessed or downloaded accidentally by anyone else, (and neither do they, being of the "if it looks pretty, click it" persuasion), and so I was wondering if this behaviour is the result of any malware, trying to persuade me to lower the security for nefarious purposes. If it isn't malware, I will have to keep investigating.
Thanks for the information. Couple thinks you can try. 1. When going to one of the sites you want to visit, hold down the CTRL key and click the site. This will override some cookie blocking programs. 2. Add the site to your Trusted Zone, With IE open, click Tools> Internet Options> Security> Trusted Sites. Add the site there. Your log looks good
