My computer has been running so slowly! I have Ad-Aware SE and when I scan the only thing that it comes up with is malaware at: c:\windows\system32\n?lookup.exe I'm not sure what to do about it….when I try to have Ad-Aware remove it I get a message saying that it cannot be removed but that it can try on startup. I try this but it also doesn't work. I'm not getting popups but the computer is so slow that it takes forever to load anything. Is this malaware what is trying up my system or something else? I just installed Trojanhunter and it came back clean. Any help would be great!
Welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Rerun Spybot & Adaware after configuring them as such:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.

Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Links to Hijack This! v 1.99.1:

Hijack This! at tools.radiosplace.com

Hijack This! at spywarewarrior.com

Hijack This! at TomCoyote.org

Run it from that folder.

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Thanks again for your help.
It came back:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Qegpfb] C:\WINDOWS\System32\n?lookup.exe

:(

Let's try this approach….

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

dir c:\WINDOWS\system32\n?lookup.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop. A Notepad window will open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.

Then you can delete the files.txt file, and the ff.bat file from your desktop.

:)
Ok here is the text of the file that came up in notepad after running the file from my desktop: Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is B05A-7C7E Directory of c:\WINDOWS\system32 08/04/2004 01:56 AM 76,800 nslookup.exe 01/11/2005 08:10 AM 401,408 n?lookup.exe 2 File(s) 478,208 bytes Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Clinton\Desktop
Boot in "safe" mode FIRST.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Qegpfb] C:\WINDOWS\System32\n?lookup.exe

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

c:\windows\system32\n?lookup.exe <— file

BE SURE TO DELETE THE CORRECT FILE!!!

nslookup.exe <– VALID WINDOWS FILE

n?lookup.exe <– MALWARE

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Did as you suggested running hijack this and removing the file. However when I rebooted in safe mode I could not find the file to do a manual removal….I did a search from the Start menu and only came up with ns\lookup files, nothing that replaced the "s" with a question mark.

Then I did a manual search of the system32 file and couldn't find anything (I made sure that I had the windows operating systems files unprotected).

Finally I did a scan with Adaware SE and it came back clean.

After that I did a hijack this scan and here are the results:

So did we really get rid of it? Or is it still hiding somewhere?
The log looks STUPENDOUS!

If you can't find the file, and it's not in the log file, then it isn't a threat.

You've got this one beat!!!

GOD bless!!!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Thanks so much for your help…this has been driving me crazy and its great to finally have a computer that works. God Bless….
