Hi Ray;

You might want to copy this into a Notepad file and save it to your desktop, to read as you work.

We old guys have to stick together. What we lack in mobility, we more than make up for using trickery and decit.

I don't see WebRebates in your Hijack This log. It usually is visable in HJT and not difficult to remove.
Did you try finding it using windows Explorer ?
Or maybe an "All Files" search would uncover it. Be sure you have set your PC to show all files(as detailed below), then do the searches in Safe Mode.

Possibly it is in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, look there too.

It can be safely deleted wherever it is found.

You didn't say if you had ran Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D, so I'm going to provide some links and instructions for use. Also, some links to online scanners. No guarantees there either, but it's worth a try.

Please use the following links to run one, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
http://be.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Netscape (6+)
Mozilla (1+)
Firefox (all)
Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

And here are links to two online Trojan Scanners. Lets run one, or both of these too.

http://scan.sygatetech.com/pretrojanscan.html

And here:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

If you are unable to get or use either of the online Trojan Scanners above………..

Go here http://www.trojanhunter.com/ and download and run the free trial of Trojan Hunter.

Then,
Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version and have been updated today. Then run full systems scans as described below.

Install and how to use the NEW Ad-aware SE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

Reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Would you please download the Spybot S&D program from here Spybot S&D and install it.
  • Select Search for updates.
  • Then select all available updates that are displayed in the white box.
  • Select a download mirror nearest your location.
  • Then select Download updates .
  • Shut down and restart Spybot.
  • Select the Search and destroy icon and click on Check for Problems.
  • Delete/fix anything that spybot lists In RED.
.

Then, please REBOOT, to allow Spybot to finish working

Next:
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next:
Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

Please Reboot into Safe Mode. How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

While in Safe Mode,
Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK, and delete them (if they are present):

These must also be Uninstalled/Removed in Control panel>Add/Remove Programs.

C:\Program Files\FraudEliminator

C:\Program Files\Ad Toolbar

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Please browse to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then browse to the C:\Window\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then in internet explore click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log.
First of all thinks for all the useful finfomation. I should have told you in my first letter that I had Ad Aware SE Pro. Any Spy Bot S&D And a paid version of Trojain Hunter. I had done all of the things you sugested except running in safe mode and enable hideen files.
I should also tell you that shortly befori received your reply, being a very impatient person, I typed the WebRebates.exe file into Spy Bots Shredder. Ever since then my copy works well except it rrefuses to copy six small files. All other programs seem to work well. I have a strong feeling that they are related to the WebRebates.exe.
I did everything as you suggested but found nothing. I deleated the Windows Temporary files in Safe mode. These were the only files to deleate. I routinely run Evidence Eliminator on my computer which takes care of the temorystuff.

Hi Ray;
You're welcome.

Are you still getting that warning when you try to print, about not being able to because of WebRebates? If not, then possibly that issue has been resolved and the problem printing those six small files lies elsewhere.
My own printer is a free spirit and works only after it has smelled the flowers, or some such nonsense.

Yes, I see you have Ad-Aware etc. It is difficult to tell from an HJT log whether the programs showing are up to date, or possibly not functional for one reason or another. Also, many are not using the programs in order to get the best possible results. That's why I like to include the setup instructions, even if they already have the program in question.

Sometimes it is necessary to "show hidden files", then go into Safe Mode, when trying to find a file or folder. Otherwise it will not be found.

On another issue. I neglected to advise you to disable some programs, before fixing the entries with Hijack This. You have a couple of programs that could interfere with that process, so should be temporarily disabled, until we have finished.

AD-AWARES AD-WATCH IS RUNNING.
You have ad-aware's ad-watch running on your computer and that is good.
But prior to doing the fix below with hijackthis it needs to be turned off.
Please do the following.

Open AdAware Se.
Click the Ad-Watch icon on the top of the screen.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you can see two checkable items called Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck those boxes.

Remember when we have completed cleaning your machine to turn it back on.

Also, Webroots Spy Sweeper could interfere. Look for its icon in your systems tray, then Right click on the icon and select "disable". It should return when you reboot.

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - (no file)

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Then, please reboot.

After removing a Virus, Trojan, or other parasites, it is good form to reset your system restore, if you are sure all have been sucessfully removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications, if you do not have them:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
To protect yourself further:
IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
The problem has not been completely fixed. While the program will now copy it won't copy six files. I don't think they are releated to WebRebates.exe. By the way this is not a printer problem it ws a problem with a program that copies one hard drive to another.
I appreciate your new advise. I was unable to access IE/Spyad it kept coming up web site unavailable. I will keep trying.

Hi Ray; Well, since you feel the problem lies within a program that copies one hard drive to another, I don't know how much help I could be to you. Possibly the program has "read me" files, or perhaps there is a site devoted to the program, that could offer assistance. Possibly the programs manufacturer has such a site.
There I go again not making myself very clear. I sent you the hijackthis again just in case I might have mised something by not have Adaware and Spy Sweeper by Webroot disabled when I ran the first hijackthis. I guess I'm woried that there is some reminent of WebRebates.exe left on my computer since that is what caused the original copy program to mal function and I'm not sure that it's not the cause of these six files not being copied. However, if you found nothing in the last hijackthis my alternative is to work with the disk copy program people who are really nice to work with. No reply is necessary. Just wanted to thank you for your patience and understanding. Ray
Glad we could be of help.
