Lethargic PC & "odd things" happening

Dear Sir or Madam:
My PC (Windows 98 SE) was never speedy, but it has recently become MUCH slower. Also, some odd things are happening, like the SETIatHome package opens of its own accord (it doesn't appear to RUN, just open). Msgsrv32 stops responding with freqency, and RNAdmin doesn't seem to want to stop at shutdown. At one point, the system couldn't find "Himem.sys" even though the file is still there. The Msgsrv32 and RNAdmin might be related to the slowdown. Maybe they just appear to be unresponsive because they're so slow?

I downloaded and ran SpyDoctor (the free scan) and found a LOT of wildtangent garbage, which I removed from the registry by hand after trying to undelete and even downloading wildtangent's undelete program. SpyDoctor (or some combination of other things) gave me a lot of runtime errors. So, have since removed that and the runtime problems have ended.

I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot and cleaned to the extent I'm able. They found a number of additional items. I have also followed the advice of about.com and reset my IE start and search pages (even though they didn't seem to have changed), protected host files, and scanned in safe mode with Ad-Aware. However, things remain slow and odd, so I remain convinced that "something" is fiddling with my PC.

The HJT log is below. I think PNY is related to a thumbdrive, ActiveSync is for ipaq interaction and I would happily get rid of whatever that miniclip thing is.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
SilverToo

I've taken the additional step of uninstalling SETI@home. I don't need this program and since it's acting flaky, thought it might help. It didn't. So, I still desperately need assistance. Thank you. SilverToo
More "clues" 1) When I look at Programs => Accessories => System Tools => DriveSpace, it tells me that both my C:\ and D:\ drives have 0 used space. That's not a typo, it thinks they're empty. However, by going to My Computer, selecting the drive and Properties, I get around 3.5 GB used on C:\ and another 2.5 GB on D:\. 2) Opening Word or Excel or any other package I've tried (haven't tried them all, but have tried about four) seems to go at normal speed. Once a file is found and selected, that seems to go at normal speed. It's finding the file that's taking forever. For example, when Word is open and I select File => Open, I can actually WATCH it search. The file window pops up and it says 0 files found and then slowly the percentage increases. Is there table that tells programs where to look for files and that could now be corrupted? Or perhaps there's some problem with the way the C:\ and D:\ drives talk to each other as most of the programs are on C:\ and most of the files on D:\? Not sure that last theory makes any sense since the file opens promptly once it's found. Anyway, any hints on what to try next would be most welcome! Thank you, SilverToo

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Download and run.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTate,

Thank you for your assistance. After running HijackThis, checking the items you listed and "Fix checked", I got the following errors:

1) Fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0187:BFF9DFFF. The current application will be terminated.

2) Regsvr32 caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0187:bff9dfff

3) [error 1 again]

4) EXPLORER caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0012:00000167

5) [error 1 again]

6) EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0187:bfff9dfff

and then had to do a hard reboot.

I downloaded and ran the cleanup program. I thought I'd cleaned up a lot by hand, but obviously there was a lot I couldn't see as it cleared up 35MB of temporary internet files plus another 4+MB of other stuff.

Then, per your instructions, ran HijackThis again and tried to post it here. The delay in my response reflects my inability to reach this website at home any more. Over the course of these several days of Ad Aware, Spybot, Cleanup, etc., could we have changed a setting or deleted something that allows me to see this site? When I originally came here, I had no problem seeing it. Two days ago, I could see the Chat room, but it took me five attempts to get connected to this forum. Last night, I tried for three hours, attempting a connection every couple of minutes, all with no success. I tried again this morning without success and am only able to post this response by doing so from work rather than home. Could my IP at home be blocked?

Below, please find the log file.

Note that Windows is now telling me I am missing a critical update. I'm assuming that's got to do with the KB891711.exe we "fixed"? Do you find this file to be a problem in and of itself or easily corrupted or??? That is, should I go ahead and download the update?

I have an idea what the jeppesen.com and miniclip.com files were and don't have a problem getting rid of them, but have no idea what iwantdway.com is and didn't want to visit that site as it appears to be a known problem. What is it?

The file search process is greatly faster, still seems a little slow, but it's been so long since it worked properly that I'm not sure my judgement of correct speed is acurate. I would declare it fixed were it not for the Windows update question and the fact that I couldn't reach tomcoyote.org last night.

I can check webmail for your response here at work and respond to you from work, but until we fix the access issue, there will be a roughly 24 hour turn time (get data, take it home, execute, bring it back to work and respond). Otherwise, you may certainly contact me via e-mail (I imagine you have access to that information from my original registration).

Thank you. Looking forward to hearing from you again.

I'll assume it is KB891711.exe. It should only need to run once though.

Go ahead and do the updates and let me know how it's running after that
I ran the update (KB903235) and another HJT log is below:

Can you tell me what the Broken Internet item is? Should I be trying to secure a copy of that .dll somewhere?

Today (and last night) I didn't have any trouble reaching this site. Still confused as to why I've had such problems earlier.

System performance seems to be back to normal. I haven't tested everything yet though. If I find other problems, should I add to this thread or post a new one (since I presume that this one will now be closed unless you see something else of concern above)?

Thank you again for your help. :D

No. That file is OK. HijackThis just doesn't know what it is.

That could have been caused by a number of things including your ISP's traffic.

Lets leave this one open for a couple more days. If you have anymore issues, just post them here.
