Bookedspace? Maybe?

Hi,

Something is going on with my sad ol' PC. I have popups galore, even trying to pop when I'm not online. I've tried Ad-Aware (which is now occasionally freezing while running), Spybot (which seems to remove the BHO Bookedspace, only to see it continually reappear), and BHODemon (again, recognizes Bookedspace but it reappears).

I found instructions for removing Bookedspace (at http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/341-p1.php) but all the files mentioned there are nowhere on my computer and the keys in the registry it notes to look for are not on my computer (however, I've found cfgmgr52, which I've seen mentioned at other places–I haven't done anything about it, though, for fear I'm going to unknowingly launch a missile, or something.

Also, a couple of times, this weird window pops up. In the title bar is: Aboxinst and it notes "Run-time error '53'" Is this related?

I ran HijackThis (I ran Spybot first and then tried Ad-Aware (it froze) and then rebooted my computer and ran HJT) and here is the log:

What could this mean?

Thank you for your help!
Hello crayfish and welcome to TomCoyote :wavey:

Download this tool : LQfix.zip
  • Unzip it to your Desktop.
  • Don't use it yet!
Download rkfiles.zip from here.
UNZIP the contents to a permanent folder. We'll use this in a little bit.

IMPORTANT! Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.A dos window will open and close again, that is normal.

Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
  • Click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • In the Advanced Settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, click "Show all files".
  • On the View tab, uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
While still in Safe Mode, doubleclick rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the DOS window closes and reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply.

Reboot the computer normally.

Please delete the version of HijackThis you have now. There is a new version out which you can get here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe and select Unzip. When done click "OK".
Close the WinZip self Extractor window. You can now delete HijackThis_sfx.exe.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click HijackThis.exe. Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread along with the contents of C:\log.txt.
Greetings Alan and thanks for your help!

I apologize that my response took so long–I've been away for a little bit.

I followed the instructions you provided and the results are below. However, I ran into a problem. After getting into safe mode and running LGfix, a window popped up, titled Registry Editor, that said:

Cannot import clear.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.

Because it's taken me so long to get back to you, I went ahead with the rest of the procedures and have posted my two logs below:

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

F1 - win.ini: run=c:\windows\options\cabs\cyxid98.exe

O18 - Filter: text/html - {8293D547-38DD-4325-B35A-F1817EDFA5FC} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\CAS\CLIENT\CASMF.DLL

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure!):

c:\windows\options\cabs\cyxid98.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PSof1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\exp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wintask.exe
C:\WINDOWS\CFGMGR52.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ELITECTB32.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\phlnrk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SUPDATE.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\bpqaja.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\exp
C:\WINDOWS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP\IRUP.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\thin-178-1-3-x.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\uci.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\pop.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts.
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Step 3
Please delete the following folders:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEIRDONTHEWEB
C:\Program Files\Cas

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 4
Download Track qoo
Save it to the desktop and unzip the folder.
Open the Trackqoo folder and double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If your Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post!

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include the results of Trackqoo.
Greetings again Alan!
