There is huge amount of malware on that computer so we'll need to clean out as much as possible with other automated scanners before fixing anything with HijackThis.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if found):

SurfSideKick 3
Bargain Buddy
POP!
webHancer

Go to C:\Program Files\Cas this folder and look for an uninstaller. Click on it to remove Casino Client.

  • Don't use it yet!
Please download the trial version of Ewido security suite.

Install and Update Ewido:
  • Download and install Ewido security suite.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
    • The program will prompt you to update, click the OK button.
    • The program will now go to the main screen.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the updates are installed, close the program.
Scanning With Ewido:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').
  • Launch Ewido again.
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the boxes that say "Perform action on all infections"and "Create encrypted backup" then choose clean and click OK.
    • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report.
    • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
  • Now close ewido security suite.
While still in Safe mode doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.A dos window will open and close again, that is normal.

Reboot into normal mode and download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

There is no need for another Hijackthis log at this time. Just post the results of l2mfix.bat.
Let me know of any complications in the above steps.
Hi Alan. Thanks for response. All your instructions were followed without problems. 226 infected objects were cleaned! Here is the l2mfix report. Only issue is that Casino and other programs appears as icons on the desktop. Also some program attempts to change the browser configuration every minute or so. (I use spysubtract to alert me to this and I deny the change every time). Thanks again, and let me know what is next. Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Note : Once the pc has restarted if a log does not appear or the icons didn't dissappear, run the "second.bat" located inside the L2mfix folder.

After the fix portion is done. Please run the option to restore the winlogon defaults (menu option 4) as most of the notify key is missing. After you do that post an option 1 log again.
Done this part. Here are the l2mfix and hjt logs:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jamie\Local Settings\Temp\sysnet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWFX5LP_0001_0614NetInstaller.exe

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
OK Alan. Thanks again.

I did all you asked. Things seem to be fine now. Some issues:

- the system kept crashing (blue screen) before i could delete all the files and folders. Everytime it restarted I ran HJT and had to fix several times the 04 dumprep 0 -k entry. Finally I must have deleted the right file and the system stopped crashing and as you can see 04 dumprep is not there.

- I also fixed an additional 04 file with HJT. It was 04 WildTangent CDAEngine

- several of the folders and many of the files you asked me to delete where not present even after showing all file extensions and hidden files.
These files were not present: wupdt, UWFX5LP…, PSof1, exp, wintask, richup, alalbn, ojoppx, dalzce, w?nword
These folders were not there: nsvsvc, vidctrl, webhancer

- I was denied access to c:\docs..and settings\Jamie\local settings\temp\sysnet.exe even in safe mode. It did say however that the folder was empty.

We may be done! :D

Here is the new hjt log.

Log appears clean of bad items, just some optional resource hogs left.

You can fix these with HijackThis also.

Scan with HijackThis and check the following:

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some experts think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it.
O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click Fix Checked.

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

I see that you are a member of the classroom but haven't been active for quite some time. Are you planning on continuing to learn how to fix malware?

Please post one more HijackThis log and if it is still clean, I'll give you some recommendations to better secure the computer.
Hi Alan. Thanks for your help. I would like to continue with the classroom and learn about malaware. I have been out for a while but I would like to restart. I see that the site has changed and I can't seem to find the thread to begin again. Where should I go to restart? Also, what is the relationship between this forum and Geeks to Go? I would love to know better ways to secure computers against malaware. Thanks again very much. EdH
I'll send you a PM with the information you requested on the classroom as it is not a good idea to give links to the classroom on the open forum.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE
a² Free Trojan Remover

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
