Hello lchen, welcome to the TC.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Hi, LDTate:

Thank you very much for your help. I did as you directed and it seems to solved the problem. However, since I ran several ewido scan, so I messed up the ewido logging. I only have HijackThis log.

It seems to me that main problem comes from msiexec.exe being hijacked. It also cleaned some dlls.

Thank you very much. By the way, since my post is resolved, should it be deleted form the forum and how that can be done?

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = D:\Program Files\Office Pro\Office\OSA9.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
:D

Hi, LDTate,

Thank you very much. All the popups were gone since last time. However, I followed your instruction and it seems to me that it did cleaned up more. When I try to delete every thing in c:\windows\temp, there are two folders cannot be deleted. One is OHotfix, for there are two files that the system doesn't allow me to delete. The other is Atue, this folder even desn't allow me to access. Other than these, evething seems to be fine. Thanks again.

Lubin

Lets try this and see if we can get rid of the temp stuff.

To use it:
  • Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and install.
  • Open CCleaner.
  • Place a check by everything in the Applications tab.
  • Place a check by Internet Explorer, Windows explorer, and System in the Windows tab.
  • Hit the button that says Run CCleaner
  • Reboot to remove index.dat files.

Notes:
1.Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".

2.if user is running Firefox: ,then click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".

Let me know how it goes. We'll have a final fix to cleanup.

3.Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
:D LDTate, Thanks. I run CCleaner. c:\windows\temp\OHotfix is still there. Atue is removed along with some other stuff. Lubin

File name Description
Ohotfix.exe OHotFix patching program
Ohotfix.ini Lists the settings that can be modified to control the behavior of Ohotfix.exe and Windows Installer
Ohotfixr.dll Library file for the OHotFix program
EXCELop.msp Excel 2000 security patch file

The OHotFix program runs automatically when you double-click the binary patch package. It first checks the state of the client computer, and then if appropriate, passes a command line to Windows Installer to apply the update. You can modify the behavior of OHotFix by changing settings in the OHotFix.ini file. Complete information on the available settings is included within OHotFix.ini itself.

So it looks like OHotfix is ok.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
