Please take a look at my HJT log. At Ax's suggestion, I used Spybot, Ad-Aware SE, AVG AntiSpyware and AFT Cleaner. Then I rebooted my computer and used HJT.

Hello spiceball :D

I am not looking at anything bad in the Malware or Virus department but I do see a few things that need to be corrected, they may or maynot be part of your problem.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)

It looks like you have Norton Internet Security Installed, it most likely contains a firewall and you also have Kerio firewall installed. You also have AVG Anti Virus installed. You should only have one AV program, more than one is going to use a huge amount of system resources and cause you all sorts of problems, you should only have one firewall also. If you use a third party firewall you need to disable the windows firewall.

Go to Start> Control Panel ( switch to Classic View ) Windows Firewall and turn it off.

So, its your call, but you need to uninstall one of the Anti Virus programs , then uninstall one of the firewalls.

Your Java is seriously out of date and leaving you vulnerable to attack.
  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11 <--This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Run this system cleaner.

Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

So, make up your mind which programs to keep and which ones to uninstall and post a new HJT log and let me know if it made things run smoother.

Ken,

Thanks so much for your advice. It is such a relief to know that there are no malware/virus problems. HJT Fix Checked was done. NIS was installed last year, but the firewall was never activated, only the Windows one. I got fed up with NIS and replaced it with Kerio last year. I uninstalled NIS through the Add/Remove feature in the Control Panel and also used ZSoftInstaller. No NIS files showed up, not even in the system tray or on the list of programs when I clicked on Start. I also ran a search for any NIS files and Symantec files and noticed that there were still some Symantec shared files and a Symantec Manager file that I am unable to delete. Is this what you are referring to?

When I installed Kerio, I had already turned the Windows Firewall off. I even went into the Security Center and clicked the On button of Firewall and it said Kerio Personal Firewall is currently On. I don't see NIS Firewall showing up in the Security Center or in the Windows Firewall. Do you suppose that there might be some orphaned files of NIS running in the background?

Finally, I removed the previous version of Java but had difficulty trying to install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11. I kept getting an error message almost four hours into the download C:\PFiles\Java\jdk-1_5_0_11-nb5_5-win-ml.exe.part could not be saved because the source file could not be read.

CCleaner worked well. But when I clicked on Issues, then scanned for them, checking those that needed fixing, I was left with a host of missing shared dlls that are no longer necessary. Any idea how to get rid of them? I can’t remove them using the cleaner’s tools.

Thank you for your help. Have a nice evening.

You still have AVG Free Anti Virus installed along with Norton still running .

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.
  • Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Spiceball :D

How did you choose a name like Spiceball :D

Ok do this,

First if your going to keep AVG Anti Virus as your default anti virus program then leave it alone.

You uninstalled Norton AV, but its still running as a process on your system, its not your fault, Norton is hard to remove, so what I would do is use this removal tool from Norton to remove all of Norton.

http://service1.syma...005033108162039

So, this should leave you with
AVG Free
Kerio Firewall

This is fine, after you use the Norton removal tool, post a new HJT log and lets make sure its still not running.

Hi Ken,

Lived overseas in different countries and enjoyed eating spicy meals. Even make them at home sometimes but my Italian son-in-law prefers lasagna or pizza , lol!

Used the removal tool from Norton, then ran CCleaner, CWShredder, Spybot (with Tea Timer), and rebooted the computer. The PC dawdled and it took a while to open Mozilla Firefox and other programs. In fact, I couldn't open any websites with IE - the Search button would just click and nothing would happen. Any idea why the computer slowed down?

Look on your C: Drive for a folder named i386, if its present you may not need the disk for this.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.
Defrag your Hard Drive.

Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories > System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to help speed up your system. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

The problem may lie with removing Norton, its a real stickler to remove it all nice and clean. If the above did not help, lets use System Restore to restore your system back to before you ran the Norton removal tool. Although I have had people run this tool many times with no ill effects

Go to Start> Control Panel ( make sure your in Category View ) Performance and Maintenance and up on the left click on System Restore and then click on Restore My Computer to an Earlier Date and choose a date prior to running the Norton Tool

Let me know if any of this helped.

Ken, thanks so much for your helpful advice. The computer is working fine now. I didn't have to use my XP disc in my CD drive for the sfc /scannow, nor did I have to resort to System Restore. Be blessed always.

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D

Greetings, Ken, I forgot to check with you whether I should now try downloading the JRE 5.0 update 11, since everything on my computer is squeaky clean. I wanna make hay here while the sun is shining.

Yep go for it, the newer updates keep plugging holes that let the bad guys in so its important that you keep it updated.

Heres the link again, just follow my install instructions that I posted earlier.

Every few months you can go to the Control Panel ( switch to Classic View ) and open Java, it looks like a little coffee cup and go to the update tab and have it check for updates.

Hi Ken: Second attempt to download of JRE 5.0 update 11 was also unsuccessful. Got the same error message as before: C:\PFiles\Java\jdk_1_5_0_11-nb5_5-win-ml.exe.part could not be saved because the source file could not be read. Is there something else wrong with my system?

If there is it could be a windows problem. I gave you the instructions for the Offline installation , try doing the online installation and see if that works. In the meantime I will look around and see if I can find any info on why it won't install. Also, when you get a bad download and try to download it again, delete the old download, don't let it overwrite the old one, the original could have been a bad download.

Read this.

If all fails, try this version
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
