Sluggish new Toshiba laptop

I have a new 1.2 celeron laptop, I run AVG, Panda scan online, ad aware and will get spybot later…

I trimmed the start up, I am always running AVG and ad aware, but my machine is slow..I have 256 megs of memory, I know I need more…but it is way too slow I think…

please have a look?

Hello Jason, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you are not being helped elsewhere, then please follow these directions in the posted order.

1) Let's get that HJT.exe off the Desktop. Do this for me, open your C:\ and RIGHT click a blank spot then make a new folder. Name it HJT, then move the HJT.exe into that folder. Now it looks like this: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe and can now store logs, backups for safety and the HJT.exe.
You can create a shortcut to the Desktop for ease of working if you wish.

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

3) Download the most recent versions of Ad-aware 1.06 and Spybot 1.04 as they can get to places HJT cannot. Please use this link: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php to download, update, configure and run these two "big guns" and allow them to remove anything bad they locate. Both programs provide backups for your safety. ***note: please do not activate Spybot TeaTimer until your computer is clean. Run Spybot first and reboot between the scans and run the "Full System Scan".

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run CCleaner but do not use the registry cleaner unless you backup the registry first as prompted. Then restart the computer and surf a while then post a new HJT log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

It is generally thought there is no need to run both SpywareGuard and TeaTimer as they do the same thing.
Keep your AVG updated and make sure you are running a firewall and that autoupdates are turned on in the Security Center.
