TCHal,

Please download Ewido Security Suite, it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing the program, under "Additional Options" uncheck…
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files:
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Close ewido. Do not scan yet.

Now, let's do some work on your log.

run HijackThis.

*Click Do a system scan only .
*Place a check in the box before each of these Items.

*Close all open programs (including browser windows) and fix the Items by clicking the Fix checked button.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode (without networking) by tapping F8 during startup.

Open ewdio:
  • Click on scanner.
  • Click on Complete System Scan, the scan will now begin.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK.
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located at the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
  • Click Save Report.
  • Now save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

Navigate to c:\Windows\system32\ and delete the tasmgr.exe that is 392KB.

Reboot Windows Normally and post a new HijackThis log, the ewido report and your comments on how things are running.

Maynard, Just a note to let you know. In trying to backup MS money, I now get the error that the system cannot find, or access the floppy (A:) drive, and will not allow a backup. No other errors yet. Thanks.
Ok, I tried to reboot, the blackscreen came up, saying that I had a bad command or file name A: (in the A drive I assume)? Couldn't do anything from there, so I shut down the system totally, then turned it on again, it came up then as normal, however, still unable to perform a backup. it's as if the A drive doesn't exist anymore. the exact error message states in the title at the top of the dialog box: Money 2004 Multiple disc backup then the error message: Unable to access te specified drive. holy carp**….. :(
I noticed on a suggested fix from Siqqyx on recent posts, he said regarding Ewido: NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives. You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one. If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action. Is it possible that Ewido messed up my A drive?
Do you know how to get into your CMOS at startup? If you double click My Computer, does the A drive show-up?
No idea how to get to CMOS. I opened my computer, A drive shows, upon double clicking (after too long a wait) it told me I needed to reformat the disk, so I hit the OK button, and it came back with a message that windows could not reformat the disk.
Right click on My Computer> Properties> Hardware> Device Manager> Are there any items with a Yellow or Red mark by them?
when I asked it to show hidden devices it shows yellow exclamtion points on the following: mrtRate nVidia WDM AV crossbar nVidia WDM Video Capture (universal) this includes all devices, even when expanded.
What does it show for your Floppy Disk Drive? 3.5? 1.2? Have your tried another Floppy diskette?
It shows 3.5 disk. I dug out another disk, reformatted then was able to save to that disk. So I guess that portion of my problem is solved. Strange that the disk I had been using all of a sudden went bad?

GREAT. Post a new HJT log please so we can make sure you're clean
Thanks Mr. Tate.
I know that I'm still infected, as I continue to get "helpful" annoying popups from Trend saying that they have caught and stopped some malicious adware, however their popups are just as annoying. easily one hundred time per day, staing that they have stopped a ADWclickspring deal, or a purityscan deal.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

These aren't bad, but are resource hogs and not needed at startup"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"
