I thought I should also note that I have updated and ran Spybot search and destroy, Adaware, and spyware blaster, as well as my updated trend micro pc-cillin spyware remover. nothing seems to work, spybot finds the problem, but cannot delete it, trend keeps "blocking" the same adware file from clickspring, but the blocking is just about as annoying as a popup, as it happens sometimes 50 times per day.
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

We will be notified by email when you reply and will respond as soon as possible.

Thanks Maynard,
I had HJT in a folder of it's own in the C drive (or so I thought) Let me know if I got it right. There were about 7 different HJT files that I tried to copy and pste to the new HJT folder. Hopefully I got them all.
Here is the new log.

Hi TCHal, HijackThis does look like it's running from a location that will allow it to make backups now. ;) I am looking over your logs and will reply as soon as I am finished. Thanks for your patience! m
Please got to your Control Panel and use Add or Remove Programs to remove the following Software (if Present):
  • PurityScan
  • Clickspring
Now let's do some work on your log.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

In the Tools menu of any folder, select Folder options.
  • click the view tab.
  • choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
  • uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
  • Close the window with ok
  • All hidden files will now be visible
Be sure to undo these changes when we are done.

run HijackThis.

*Click Do a system scan only .
*Place a check in the box before each of these Items.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00787277-BABB-9B3C-BF1E-B9EEFFFDBCCE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ylqcbsk.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Hivflg] C:\WINDOWS\system32\t?skmgr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Notn] C:\Program Files\apsi\wtta.exe

Also, Backweb while not malicious, is adware and can be removed by adding the following line in with the others to be fixed.
O4 - Global Startup: Compaq Connections.lnk = C:\Program Files\Compaq Connections\1940576\Program\BackWeb-1940576.exe

*Close all open programs(including browser windows) and fix the Items by clicking the Fix checked button.

Now we need to make sure these files are gone.

Reboot your system into Safe Mode.

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them (if they are present):

FOLDERS(with all their content):

C:\Program Files\apsi\

Exit Explorer and reboot back into normal mode.

This infection uses odd characters to hide its file names.

Follow these instructions to help us locate the correct file to delete.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\t?skmgr.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.

Run HijackThis and post a new log.
Thanks Maynard, not sure if I did this correctly or not.
There was no purityscan, or Clickspring in my program files.
here is what came up with the nifty findfile.bat trick:

Volume in drive C is PRESARIO
Volume Serial Number is 18A1-900D

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\system32

08/04/2004 02:56 AM 135,680 taskmgr.exe

2 File(s) 537,088 bytes

Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop
then following is my new HijackThis log:

Hi TCHal,

It looks to me like you did everything correctly.

There are a couple of more things We need to deal with, and then I'll have some recommendations for keeping your system clean.

First lets delete what's left over from the Purityscan infection.

With all files visible, Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32.

The file you want to delete was created on 07/21/2005
It has a file size of 401,408 bytes

It may be called t?skmgr.exe, but more likely it will look just like the real taskmgr.exe.

Be vary careful which file you delete. If you can't find a file that matches the date and file size exactly, don't delete anything.

Post back about your experiences with trying to delete the bad file.

2nd:

The extra characters at the end of this file bother me a little.

F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\OPLIMIT\ocraware.exe, ?Ô

I would like to try something that will involve uninstalling Ocraware.

Here is a description of what Ocraware is.

ocraware.exe is an optical character recognition application (OCR) and is used by OmniPage from ScanSoft. This process provided the functionality to scan and transfer text from a printed form to an editable form on the PC.

I have a couple of questions I would like you to answer in your next post.

Do you use this software?
If you do, do you have the installation media available (are you able to reinstall it?)?

m
Hi Maynard, Sorry I was out for a few days. First I searched for the taskmgr file you mentioned, and found nothing of that size. I searched using the star/run function, brought up all files in system 32 then scrolled, and finally used the search function, but to no avail. there were two taskmgr files, one at 132KB and one at 392KB. As far as the ocraware, I have no knowledge of ever using/needing that function. however I do notice that upon rebooting the computer I always get an error message saying Windows cannot find (two symbols, one resembling the circle after the ocraware file you mentioned, and then a square with some sort of slash above it. The clickspring and purityscan problems continue. My trend virus system seems to "catch" them every time they try to activate, however that means I get a stupid pop-up window telling me that about 100 times a day. So I'd like to get them out of my system if at all possible. I can't figure out why with 2 antivirus systems, a firewall, 3 anti spyware/malware programs running, how all this stuff can keep getting on my system  thanks for your help.
Welcome back TCHal, Because It's been a few days, please post a new log for me to review. Don't Panic. We'll get this stuff out of your hair for good, and I'll have some recommendations for keeping your computer clean at the end of our clean up process. m
Thanks Maynard,

Hi TCHal.

Since the time of your last log, you have somehow acquired a more serious infection, so lets put purityscan on the back burner for the time being.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and

paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Thanks Maynard. Wow one would think that having antivirus software up to date, that a virus wouldn't be able to get in. Guess they just wanted their $$. *Close all open programs (including browser windows) and fix the Items by clicking the Fix checked button..

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
