I am trying to connect to VPN for a new job I am starting, and every time I get logged in my computer then shuts down and restarts. I have run 4 different spyware cleaners, removed unnecessary programs, disk error check, disk cleanup, disk defrag, and virus scan with AVG.

I have now also run a HijackThis log, but don't know what to do with it from here.

There are currently 50 processes running on my computer, and I don't know what most of them are.

Someone please help!

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to TomCoyote.org!

You have some malware running amok on your machine, but not a lot. :(

I can't tell if it's "adware" or some type of virus or trojan.

Let's see if we can nuke them with some "standard" spyware killers.

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=13

Reboot after running each program.

Please try these free online virus scans of your system:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

The scans will take a while dependiong on your system speed/disk size, etc.

When complete, make a new log file and "copy/paste" it into this thread, and we'll deal with anything "bad" that has survived. :)
Thank you!

I had already run SpyBot and AdAware, but I ran them again just to be sure.

SpyBot encountered an error during the scan; these are the results:

Error during check!: Xuron55 (Datei C:\WINDOWS\win.ini kann nicht geöffnet werden. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process) ()

(I did have all other windows closed during the scan).

AdAware found nothing new.

I then ran Trend Micro Housecall, which found nothing.

Panda Active Scan found problems but could not fix them; results follow:

I'm not sure if you needed all of the extra information, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

Thanks so much!
CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…://my.yahoo.com

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

msnmsg.exe <— file
(Probably in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ folder on your machine)
svchosts.exe <— file

EXTREME WARNING!!!

Please note the spelling on that last malware file. It is named very closely to a valid and necessary Windows file.

Use extreme caution when finding and deleting that malware file!!!

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe <— Necessary Windows file!!!

(Location unknown)svchosts.exe <— Malware file

Please note the spelling!

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

While booted in safe mode, navigate and delete all files in these folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\Christina Greenland\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\C. Andrew Macdonell\Local Settings\Temp

Don't delete the folders - just the files contained inside the folders.

Then empty the recycle bin.
Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Okay, followed all the steps.

When I searched for the 2 malware files (msnmsg.exe & svchosts.exe), neither of these showed up in my search (including hidden files and folders) in either safe mode or regular.

Congratulations!

The log looks good.

If you can't find those files, and they're not in the log, they aren't a threat.

Has your original problem been resolved?

I am trying to connect to VPN for a new job I am starting, and every time I get logged in my computer then shuts down and restarts

Could you check your Spybot and Adaware settings (at the link I provided) and run them again?

I would think they should remove most of the items you said they found…

The website I posted the link for on configuring Spybot and Adaware seems to be having technical difficulties at the present time….

Please use these links instead:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot
Thank you so much for all of your help. My original problem is now resolved; it apparently also had something to do with a non-critical windows update. However, even after I had downloaded the updates it was still shutting down periodically, just not right away every time. Now that I've gone through all of the clean up and the HijackThis log you helped me clean out, it hasn't happened again at all. I will follow these links for configuring AdAware and SpyBot, and I've made a vow to myself to run maintenance on my computer weekly from now on! This is something I used to be better about, but have been putting it off lately. Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it. :D
Helping is what we are here for.

I am glad we were able to be of assistance.

GOD bless you and yours!!!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
