What should I select to Fix?

Thanks in advance, Tim
Download this tool: LQfix.zip
Unzip it to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet!

The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection and is not to be used on any other infection as it could damage a person's PC

IMPORTANT! Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.
A doswindow will open and close again, that is normal.

Reboot into normal mode and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Hey Hans! Thanks for the Reply! Sorry it took me so long to check back, but I have been out of town.

I ran your LQfix, here is the new Logfile:

Thanks Again for the help!

Tim
Hello Tim. :wavey:
Hans is having a problem with his Internet connection so I will be continuing the cleanup in his place.

Step 1
I need you to disable SpySweeper until after the computer is clean as it will interfer with the registry changes we will need to do.
  • Open SpySweeper click > Options over to the left then > program options > Uncheck "load at windows startup".
  • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck "home page shield".
  • Uncheck 'automaticly restore default without notifiction".
Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus9.hpwis.com/
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/238a67476e8635…ip/RdxIE601.cab

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
Automatic updates for ViewPoint products such as ViewPoint Media Player (as bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Compuserve, etc) Recommended to check here and remove with Add/Remove Programs.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ALCXMNTR.EXE

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Thanks Alan,

You guys are great .. to give up personal time to help out users in need .. well it is very nobel!

Things have been running better the last week or so … but, I made the changes you suggested anyway. I have removed my Symantec Antivirus and switched to AVG free. Can I remove that last Symantec entry in the log below? Can I now turn Spysweeper back on? Here is the latest log:

Your new log is clean. :)

You can fix this entry with HijackThis since the program no longer exists:

O23 - Service: SymWMI Service (SymWSC) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe

I would also recommend removing Ares from your computer as it comes bundled with malware. You can read about it here and also find a clean File Sharing program.

You may now turn SpySweeper protection back on.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Thanks Alan! I have one more question. I noticed one of the software recommendations you made (ZoneAlarm) is a firewall software. I've tried using a security suite from F-Secure (it was offered for free through my ISP) but was unable to use because the firewall software conflicted with my CISCO VPN software I use to get into my work network. Unfortunatly I am not going though that firewall unless I am VPNed to work. I am using a LINKSYS router. I thought it created a firewall for me. Do I need to have something like ZoneAlarm also? If so, is there a way to get around the CISCO VPN conflict? Thanks again for all you help Alan! It is a relief to know there is some good help out there when I need it! Tim
As long as you have the router configured properly, it should block the unwanted pests from getting to your computer. Your welcome. Glad to get the computer working better for you.
