Hi, I'm fairly new to solving problems on my machine. Just been using about a year. Just registered today but have had this problem about a week and half, trying to solve on my own. This will be a long explanation so please bear with me as I'm tying to give as much info as possible. Inernet Explorer loads very slowly as well as any other program. I experience numerous crashes, ie: This program is not responding, and programs just freeze up and have to restart to end. Ihave run numerous scans using the following programs with no results: SpyBot S&D- Ad-Aware SE-Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta-SpyWare Blaster-eTrust PestPatrol- EZ Firewall-eTrust EZ Antivirus, and recently obtained WinPatrol Explorer. Using WinPatrol and Google to try and get rid of any invalid BHO and IE Add-ons has proven to be almost useless and very time consuming. I ran across this forum on one of my searches and found HijackThis, downloaded and ran my first scan using the Quick Start method. The scan results show a number of entries I"m not sure about others I recognize from the research I"ve done on Google. My computer has all the latest updates from Microsoft and Spyware/Malware/Antivirus programs. Sorry, foregot to mention I"m running Windows XP, SP2 and Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2. Can someone please help me with this problem. I"m about to go bald from pulling my hair out. Thanks in advance. dhall

If you didn't set these, then fix also.
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you again LDTate. My computer seems to be operating fine for now, a little more time will, I'm sure, prove to be Mission Accomplished. I do have one small favor to ask before you investigate yet another Spy or computer problem. In the proccess of all the changes I failed to notice that I allowed my home page to be changed and I've forgotten how to change it back. Please advise and I'll leave you to your Super Hero duties. Once again THANK YOU for your help and patience. dhall. :( :o :D Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Well, for once my small amount of patience paid off. I noticed, after following your instructions that there was a folder icon that appeared called "desktop.ini." Afraid to delete it, I googled to find out more. In the meantime your last response came in. Following advise to remove preveious restore points and reset folder defaults took care of desktop.ini. Had no idea there were so many. Thank you yet one more time for you help and guidiance. IESPY AD is all I need to complete your recommendations. Computer seems to be running good now. Hopefully I won't have anymore trouble. Thanks. dhall. :D
