It's been about two weeks since I began to have problems with my computer. The pop up problem has slowly escalated to the point where I cannot work on my computer anymore. These are the programs I am using that aren't helping -
1. Microsoft Anti Spyware Beta1
- Catches almost all spyware but does so almost every 20 minutes. Something always gets through. My Main program since it has realtime help and is always running. Some of what it catches: Navidad Worm, Bargain Buddy, Elite Bar, and a lot of "exact.—–" just fill in the blank.
2. Spybot - Search and Destroy
3. Spyware Blaster
4. Ad-Aware SE

I use symantec Antivirus Corp. Ed. - Has caught about 9 viruses since 6/17 (more before that).

I also get this error messgae at start up : ERROR LOADING C:\windows\cfgmgr52.dll The Specific Module Could Not Be Found
Had another error message that went away after running "CCleaner"

Here is my HijackThis Scan Results (the first time I ran this I got the blue screen of death - I ran it, got the results, copied, opened internet explorer, typed in www.tomcoyote.org and the blue screen popped up. Did a system scan before starting up again and nothing came up - everything looked fine….don't know what happend.):

My task manager window has lost its tabs! Anyone know how to fix this!! All I see are the programs running with a scroll bar!

Double click near the border of Task Manager (not where the programs are listed) to bring back the tabs.


Download this tool : LQfix.zip
  • Unzip it to your Desktop.
  • Don't use it yet!
IMPORTANT! Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.A dos window will open and close again, that is normal.
Reboot the computer normally.


Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Please look for the following file : C:\WINDOWS\System32\exp << Notice that it does not have a file extension.

Right click on the file and choose 'properties', than on the 'version' tab note what the "Company" and "Version" are.

Submit it to the following links for a scan.

Do the same for this file : C:\WINDOWS\system32\NRERROR.DLL

Scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log as a reply to this thread. Let me know what you found out about exp and NRERROR.DLL.

First of all thanks for helping me out!

There were two things I could not do - for both the "exp" and the "nrerror.dll" files I could not find a tab named 'version' once I had right clicked and choose properties. Therefore, I could not find out what the company or versions were.

I did scan both files on the two sites you provided and both sites found viruses in the two files. Here are the results of the scans:

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

I got an error as it was beginning to scan:

Close the program out. Restart it and choose option 5 to fix the error. Now try the instructions for option 1 again.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Note : Once the pc has restarted if a log does not appear or the icons didn't dissappear, run the "second.bat" located inside the L2mfix folder.


After the fix portion is done. Please run the option to restore the winlogon defaults (menu option 4) as most of the notify key is missing. After you do that post an option 1 log again.

You have Spybot S&D's Teatimer running which is good, but we need you to disable it for the remainder of the fix as it will interfere with the registry changes being made.
Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer". Reboot after unchecking the entry.


We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.


Step 5
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\exp << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\javvtmsg.exe << File Only

C:\Program Files\Cas << Whole Folder
C:\Program Files\MyPoints_PointAlert << Whole Folder

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

itpfd.exe

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.


Step 6
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.

My computer seems to be behaving normally…no problems. I noticed that ever since you had me run all those scans in the beginning…the spybot program doesn't find anything (use to always find the elitebar & one other). I did not find the files javvtmsg.exe or itpfd.exe. I also did not have the casino client or cas installed as a program….but i did find the cas folder. I tried to find the files in safe mode, but made no difference.

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.


I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.

Thank You So Much for all your Help!!!! I really appreciate your time…hopefully i can stay clean…i think i know where i got the virus…a website….www.musiccodes.com…through myspace…i know other people who got a virus after visting that site. I'll make sure to download the programs I don't have to help from preventing this in the future…i feel much better protected. This is a work computer so I better so downloading carp**!! Lesson learned….one last question (more than one i guess)….what should i do with all the programs on my desktop that you had me download….save them on a folder? on a cd…what about all the log files that got saved? do i need them? Thanks Again!! Gaby :wavey: ps is the google bar better than the yahoo toolbar? I use yahoo so i have that one and it blocks pop-ups really well. Do you really reccommend I use firefox instead of IE? Your welcome. Glad to be able to help remove your computer problems.

Sorry about the delay, had to go to work. :(

Delete these folders/files as they are for specific infections and are updated when new versions come out.

You can also delete all of the log files that were created during the fixes.

For the toolbar, if you are happy with Yahoo Toolbar, go ahead and keep it without getting Google Toolbar. I've never used Yahoo so I can not comment on how it compares to Google. I use Firefox and am very happy with it. It does take some getting used to but for myself, it works much better than Internet Explorer. Since this is a work computer, you'll need to decide if it is worth getting for you. Either way, Internet Explorer needs to be used to check for updates to Windows and some websites require it to run properly.
