Okay…I've added a few additonal notes in the steps below.

If the infection comes back in the HJT log included with your reply, I'll turn another fix later this morning.

Step#1:Getting Ready

(the reason Wordpad was chosen is that Notepad is sometimes deleted by this variant)

Please save these instructions to WordPad so that you have them accessible while following the steps. You also may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available.

After downloading the tools, you must disconnect from the internet totally, because staying connected while fixing will prevent the fix from working. Also please keep Internet Explorer and Outlook Express closed throughout as opening either will reinstall the infection.

To replace Internet Explorer to use during this fix, please use Internet Explorer once to download and install FireFox, to be used as your alternate browser throughout this fix.

Close Outlook Express and Internet Explorer for the duration of this fix

Please start by downloading the tools you will need to clean this infection. If you have a problem or question with any please continue to follow the list step by step to the end and ask the questions when you are asked to reply. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you finally reply.

Step#2:Show All Hidden Files

BY now, 'show hidden files' is correctly set up:

Windows XP

* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Step#3:Download CWShredder , About Buster, and HSfix.zip

CWShredder and AboutBuster and HSfix.zip are already downloaded. Do NOT use them yet

Step#4:Prepare Ad-Aware for later use

Start Ad-Aware SE and make sure it is updated by clicking on check for updates now and following the prompts. Do NOT run the scan yet

Step#5:Download Registrar Lite

Registrar Lite is already downloaded but will not be needed this time.

Please disconnect from the Internet

Step#6:Disable The Bad Service
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

Do the following step for each of these services, if they exist. The idea is to be sure they are stopped with the 'startup type' set to disabled:

    Network Security Service
    Workstation NetLogon Service
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper

  • NOTE: Mandatory Step – Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper . Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled.

Also for each case make sure to write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below, and if they are not on the delete list, please add them.

Step#7:Stop The Running Processes

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the following processes if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\javave32.exe

Step#8:Use HijackThis to Delete About Blank

I now need you to delete the following files:

Note: The following files often have *.DAT or *.EXE or .DLL extensions, so the file name should be searched without an extension as all files with these given names need to be deleted.

For example, given a file named C:\WINDOWS\badfilename.exe, use 'Start > Search' to locate all other instances of 'badfilename' (with out the exe extension) and delete them along with the main file.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\javave32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msqq32.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtbeu.dll <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcbq32.dll <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\addda.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\addxt32.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcnx32.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\appxo32.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ierq.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\ntqs32.exe <–this file

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#9:Cleaning With HijackThis

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

Note … IF you find any entries additional entries with different file names (such as the R entries you found on the last try, or in the O23's with the 'funny' characters that look anything like ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I), or in the O4's with the [keyname.exe] the same as the 'filename.exe', or an O2 that starts with 'BHO: Class' … THEN … write down the filenames and go back to Step #8 and and delete them too.

Then, remember to close Windows Explorer again before pressing 'Fix' in HijackThis.

click "fix checked"

Step#10: Backup The Registry

Step not needed this time

Step#11: Delete the Registry Entries

Then double-click on the HSfix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

You should get a message reporting that the changes were successfully merged.

Step#12:Fixing With CWShredder
  • CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except CWShredder
  • Run the program by clicking 'fix' and letting it fix all CWS remnants.

Step#13:Fixing With About Buster

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.
  • Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory
  • double-click on aboutbuster.exe
  • When the tool opens press the OK button, then Start button, then the OK button
  • then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files.

  • Re-run AboutBuster, as many times as it takes until it finds nothing more. If the program freezes up on you, terminate it, and keep rerunning it until it didn't find anything. In your reply, let me know how many times you had to run it.

  • Don't worry about the logfiles for it this time.

Step#14:Scanning with Ad-Aware

Run Ad-Aware and perform a full scan, cleaning out anything it finds.

Then, re-run it to be sure that nothing is left.

Reboot your computer back to normal mode

Step#15:Scan and Post a New HJT log with other logs
  • Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

    Reconnect To The Internet

  • Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.
Good Luck!

daveai
Daveai,

Whew, that took a while. No problems, just the Adaware scans take time.

Here are the details:

Step#6:Disable The Bad Service
Only Network Security Service was present. Workstation NetLogon Service and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper did not exist. It was stopped and I did set it to disabled on startup. I also wrote down the path of the Network Security Service and deleted it in step 8.

Step#7:Stop The Running Processes
The process C:\WINDOWS\system32\javave32.exe did not exist.

Step#8:Use HijackThis to Delete About Blank

I found & deleted the following files. Files that are in red were extras that I added to the original list.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\javave32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msqq32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msqq32.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtbeu.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcbq32.dll

C:\WINDOWS\addda.exe
C:\WINDOWS\addda.dll

C:\WINDOWS\addxt32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcnx32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\appxo32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ierq.exe

C:\WINDOWS\ntqs32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ierf.exe

Step#9:Cleaning With HijackThis

Note … IF you find any entries … I did find a few additional entries. See those in red below.

These two R1-HKCU entries, and the R3 were not in the scan I fixed but are present in the new HJT log posted at the end of this missive.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtbeu.dll/sp.html#37049

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32
\mtbeu.dll/sp.html#37049

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

This was also not present in the HJT scan.

O23 - Service: Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32
\msqq32.exe" /s (file missing)

This entry was in the scan but not on the delete list. Per your instructions I deleted it.
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ierf.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ierf.exe

There was this listing also. I tried to delete it but I was denied no matter what I tried. It is still present in the new HJT scan below.
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

Step#13:Fixing With About Buster
It only took one scan with About buster to show no trouble.

Step#14:Scanning with Ad-Aware

Had to run full scan three times before being nothing was left. In addition the CoolWebSearch Win32TrojanDownloaderAgent.jq and Win32TrojanAgent.bi (not sure if this second name is fully correct) were present.

Reboot went very quickly. No popups. New log is below.

Okay. I think you may have gotten it. Very nice work findng those extra HJT entries.

Do not worry about ctfmon.exe. It's legit.

Now for a quick HJT step to make sure it's gone:

Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtbeu.dll/sp.html#37049

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtbeu.dll/sp.html#37049

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

Then send me another HJT log, and if it comes back clean…we'll move onthe the final steps for your fix.

Again…very nice work :)

Dave
Dave,

Thanks for the pat on the back. However I couldn't have done it without your guidance.

I looked up ctfmon.exe and found out that it is legal … after posting. Ooops, my mistake. Thank goodness it refused to be deleted.

Found all four items and fixed them with HJT. Here is the newest log.

Thanks again. I'll check back soon for the next steps.

Suzanne
Thanks.

The log is clean :) No evidence of the infection.

Now for the rest of the cleanup steps:

Step#1:Restore Deleted System Files

Now we need to see if we need to restore some deleted files:Please check for the following files using the Windows Search Engine:
  • control.exe
  • rundll32.exe
  • wmplayer.exe
  • msconfig.exe
  • notepad.exe
  • shell.dll
  • SDHelper.dll
If any are missing or not working properly then you can download new copies from
Merijn's Files and following the instructions at that site to have them where they belong for your OS.

[*]If you are having any difficulty with Notepad, please go to Merijn's Files and choose 'Windows Files' from the menu on the left hand side of the page. Then choose 'Notepad' from the list and download it to C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32

[*]Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.

[*]This infection often deletes some system files that need to be replaced. The most frequent one it deletes is shell.dll in Win2K or XP. In XP there are two copies of this file, one in Windows (WINNT) and one in Windows\System32. It does not delete the one in Windows\System so it does not affect Win9x/ME. If you find it missing, please copy the shell.dll from c:\windows\system32\dllcache into both \Windows (WINNT) and Windows\System32 .

[*]The other system file which is most frequently deleted is control.exe. Please check to make sure that you have this file and it is the correct size. If not Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to the information at this website. The control.exe is more often deleted in Win9x/ME.

[*]If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button

Step#2:Complete An Online AntiVirus Scan

Run an online antivirus scan at:

Trend Micro Online AV

Reboot

Step#3:Scan And Post a New HijackThis Log
  • Navigate to C:\Windows
  • look for files that were created at the approximate time and date as the infection occurred.
  • look for those that end in exe, DAT and DLL and if found, right click on the file and check properties. Legitimate files should be copyrighted by Microsoft
  • if you determine they are bad files, right click on them and choose delete
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System or C:\Windows\System32 (depending on the OS) and repeat each of the above steps to check for those ending in exe, DAT and/or DLL
  • if the above files will not delete, then make a new folder on your desktop by right clicking on the desktop and choosing New > Folder. Name the folder CWS Files.
  • Move the files from C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System or C:\Windows\system32
to the new folder CWS Files.

Step#4:Using your WIndows CD to replace System Files

** In cases where many system files are missing you have no alternative but to have them insert their Windows OS disk and run sfc /scannow from the Run box if able or from Recovery Console if not able to get into windows

Step#5:Scan And Post a New HijackThis Log

1. Scan again with HijackThis

2. POST your log file using Add Reply to see what is left to fix.

Thanks
daveai
Dave,

Well, I gave it my best shot but I have a lot questions about this last set of directions. Bear with me, I need clarification on some things (in red) that may seem rather simple. I hope it's not just me being rather dense. I have rebooted the system since the last HJT log so I have included a new one at the end of this post.

Restore Deleted System Files. - All files were found and seem to be where they need to be.

Note Pad - Still have it, and no difficulties.

Hoster - I can download the zip file but WinZip reports that it is not a valid archive and refuses to open it. (I tried several times to open and also downloaded it more than once) Is it my methods or the file? If the file is the problem is there an alternate download site?

Control.exe and shell.dll - Seem to be good on this.

Spybot - did a fresh install of newer version (1.4 verses 1.3). SDHelper problem solved.

Online Virus scan - Not medium or extreme threats found. It reported nothing about lesser threats.

Reboot - went fine and quick

Deleting corrupted files from C:\Windows, C:\Windows\System and C:\Windows\System32 - opening the windows, system and system32 folder takes an extreamly long time. I'm thinking that perhaps one of the files from step 1 is not so fine… or maybe there is too many bad files in here. Anyway to tell?

There are tons of exe files in these folders; not so many .dll files, and scarcly a .dat. Each looks the same as the next and I'm not seeing anything mentioning microsoft no matter what date. Please make it a bit clearer how to tell what should be in these folders and what should be scraped? What will happen if something that is legit is deleted. Will I simply be prompted to retrieve the missing file from my installer disk?

Using the Windows CD - How do I know if too many system files are missing and I have no alternative than to use the windows disk?

Suzanne
Thanks Suzanne.

Let's take a simpler approach. Sorry about any confusion with the instructions.

1 – Hoster simply replaces your Hosts file with the Miccrosoft default. I'm going to recommend a stronger solution…that you use a Hosts file that is designed to protect your system by disablind access to a long list of known-to-be-full-of-malware sites:

So, please go to this page:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

and read about it…then download/install the MVPS-Hosts file on your system.

2 – Don't worry about hand deleting the files…let's run some automated scanner/cleaners instead.

This will satisfy me that no malware is lurking about that HJT cannot see:

3 – After checking yourself against the following instructions, run AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy:

Please see How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software.

Please see How to use Spybot to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software, which may catch things that Ad-Aware misses.

If the above finds things to clean, please re-run them to be sure the infections are gone. If not, please tell me what could not be cleared out.

4 – Now, reboot normally and run at least two of these online virus scans (Or more if you wish.), reboot after each scan:

Bitdefender<<
RAV<<
eTrust<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful

Housecall<<
Panda ActiveScan<<
If the above find things to clean, please re-run them to be sure the infections are gone. If not, please tell me what could not be cleared out.

5 – And when you reply to tell me how these went, please send one last HijackThis log.

Finally, please review these general prevention steps to keep one's computer clean and secure. You have already taken most of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Be sure you update your anti-virus software at least once a week.

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – Continue to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – Continue using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
daveai
Dave,

Thanks, Thanks, Thanks, for the simplification. I shouldn't have any trouble with this. Busy day here today. I'll post results later this afternoon or evening.

It feels good being on the upside of this thing. I really appreciate all your help and guidance.

Suzanne
Dave,

Host file is downloaded and installed in the correct place. Thanks.

I ran Ad-Aware and Spybot as per the tutorials. Each found entries the first go round but ran clean on the econd scan. I then rebooted and ran both Ad-Aware andSpybot again. Nothing found by either program.

I then attempted to run the online scannign programs. :rant2: I've had trouble using them in the past and assumed that they are designed to be run over a high speed connection. Perhaps this is still the case 'cause I'm on a 56K dialup connection and still having trouble. Panda Active Scan generated errors after 20 mins of trying to download its software. A second try yielded the same results. Housecall looked promising at first. It's software downloaded after 40 mins but 30 mins later hung up the browser at 70% thru the first scan. I didn't have the patience to try again and instead opted to ask you just how necessary these scans are.

In Ad-Aware there is a search mode that lets you search for ADS. What exactly is this? Last time I ran it…when highly infected….I came up with thousands of entries infected.

Should I be running Spybots Tea Timer if I also run SpywareBlaster, Spyware Guard and IE/Spyad?

Do I need to/ should I clear out XP's system restore points to avoid possible reinfection? If so what is the best way to clear them out.

Finally, Thanks again for all you great help. Sorry I failed to get those online scans to work.

Thanks for the update Suzanne :) It's been quite a journey. You did great !!

Good Good

I then attempted to run the online scannign programs. …… I didn't have the patience to try again and instead opted to ask you just how necessary these scans are.

Not a big issue now. Go ahead and be sure your Norton is uptodate and scan with that. We are just being extra sure here.

In Ad-Aware there is a search mode that lets you search for ADS. What exactly is this? Last time I ran it…when highly infected….I came up with thousands of entries infected.

Means 'Alternate Data Streams' which is a technique for appending additonal data to a file, and is just one of the techniques used by the AB authors to hide the infection components. AboutBuster helps to clean theese out.

Should I be running Spybots Tea Timer if I also run SpywareBlaster, Spyware Guard and IE/Spyad?

SpywareGuard and TeaTimer do the same thing, so lose one of them. SpywareBlaster and IE-Spyad help secure IE from known bad sites….I recommend installing both of these.

Do I need to/ should I clear out XP's system restore points to avoid possible reinfection? If so what is the best way to clear them out.

Since you are now cleaned up, this is a good idea.

To prevent any remnants of the problems hiding out in your restore files, please disable Windows System Restore, then reboot, then re-enable Windows System Restore by following the instructions at: "How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore"

Then, create a new restore point for your system.

Also, use 'Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View' and re-check 'Do not show hidden files and folders' and 'Hide protected operating system files'.

Finally, Thanks again for all you great help.

It was a pleasure to help.

Thanks for visiting TomCoyote.

Dave, Followed up on all these items. System seems to be back to normal. If things get wacky again you can bet I'll be back in this forum. Be safe and best of luck with all you do. Suzanne
