My IE has been hijacked. First, all types of "colorful" favorites showed up, followed by "colorful" pop-ups. Then the system started slowing down. Booting up took forever. S&D and Adware found URLSearchHook.Atlpz and CoolWWWSearch.Aff.Winshow. Fixing them with S&D and Adware worked until the machine was shut down then restarted. Upon restart all the problems were back. I then installed Firefox and have been using it exclusively. Subsequent scans with S&D and Adware have turned up Trek Blue error Nuker, Klez, Win32.TrojanDowloader.Agent.jq and Win32.Trojan.Agent.bi. Also it seems that some of the functionality in my Norton AntiVirus is disabled. (Checkboxes not able to be selected.)

Below is a HJT scan log done after a reboot of the system.

I'd appreciate any insights on how to get rid of this junk.
Thanks!

Okay…we are fighting a nasty infection called About:Blank. It may take several posts to get it completely knocked down.

Here's the first one…

Step#1:Getting Ready

(the reason Wordpad was chosen is that Notepad is sometimes deleted by this variant)

Please save these instructions to WordPad so that you have them accessible while following the steps. You also may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. You must disconnect from the internet totally, as staying connected while fixing will prevent the fix from working. Also please keep Internet Explorer and Outlook Express closed throughout as opening either will reinstall the infection. Read through all the instructions so that you can ask any questions now, before you disconnect from the Internet.

Please start by downloading the tools you will need to clean this infection. If you have a problem or question with any please continue to follow the list step by step to the end and ask the questions when you are asked to reply. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you finally reply.

Step#2:Show All Hidden Files

Please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.
http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip

Step#3:Download CWShredder

1. Please Download the most recent version of CWShredder, from CWSInstall.exe

2. Check for Updates but please Do NOT use it yet

Step#4:Download About Buster

1. Please download About:Buster from here: http://www.malwarebytes.biz/AboutBuster5.zip.

2. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster.

3. Check to make sure it is up-to-date. Please Do NOT use it yet

Step#5:Download Registrar Lite

Another program to download is Registrar Lite for use later: Please download Registrar Lite and install it to C:\Program Files\RegLite\ . This is a registry editor that is very easy to use.

Please disconnect from the Internet. You should also have all instances of IE and Outlook closed by now, and be following this fix fromthe saved text file of these instructions.

Step#6:Disable The Bad Service
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE
  • Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called Workstation NetLogon Service . Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step#7:Stop The Running Processes

(only for Win2k/XP)

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the following processes if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\atlip32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiir32.exe

Step#8:Use HijackThis to Delete About Blank

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\atlip32.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiir32.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\ipwc32.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\unvhf.dll <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\crsa32.dll <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\apphx32.dll <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\ipwc32.exe <–this file

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#9:Cleaning With HijackThis

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\unvhf.dll/sp.html#10001

click "fix checked"

Step#10: Backup The Registry

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:(this is making a Registry backup for safety in case of error)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Go to File> Export and and save as (in the C:\Program Files\Registrar Lite (Reglite) folder):

1.) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2.) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

Step#11: Delete the Registry Entries

3. Copy and paste each line of bold text below into the address bar of Reglite one at a time:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
    AND
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_
If this search finds the bad entries please look in the left hand column for the funny looking letter/number combination and if found, right click and choose delete for each entry

Please be cautious in identifying the correct entries in the registry because deleting other entries may cause serious problems with your PC

Step#12:Fixing With CWShredder
  • CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except CWShredder
  • Run the program by clicking 'fix' and letting it fix all CWS remnants.

Step#13:Fixing With About Buster

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.
  • Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory
  • double-click on aboutbuster.exe
  • When the tool opens press the OK button, then Start button, then the OK button
  • then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files.
  • If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • Post the log file in your next reply

Step#14:Saving and Using a Reg File

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Reboot your computer back to normal mode

Step#15:Scan and Post a New HJT log with other logs
  • Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

    Reconnect To The Internet

  • Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.
Good Luck!
Daveai,

I have read thu the directions and all seems to make sense. I have downloaded all suggested items and installed/updated as requested. While doing this my machine froze up tight as a drum. I had no option but to reboot. I ran a new HJT log and compared it to the last one. The new HJT log is different so I am posting it here before completing items 6-15. Since items 6-15 seem to address specific items that showed in the HJT scan please advise if I sould go ahead and use the instructions as is or if a new set is needed.

As always, thanks for your help.

The new HJT log:

Okay…new instructions reflecting the changes to the file names…

Already completed this step

Step#3:Download CWShredder

CWShredder already downloaded. Do NOT use it yet

Step#4:Download About Buster

AboutBuster already downloaded. Please Do NOT use it yet

Step#5:Download Registrar Lite

Registrar Lite already downloaded.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiir32.exe

Step#8:Use HijackThis to Delete About Blank

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiir32.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\crfy32.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\ipwc32.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\komhp.dll <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\atlip32.exe <–this file

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#9:Cleaning With HijackThis

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.
If you get errors when copying and pasting the above bold entries into RegLite please try replacing the bold text with the following abbreviated line, changed as necessary for each entry eg currentcontrolset001, currentcontrolset002
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
    AND
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_
If this search finds the bad entries please look in the left hand column for the funny looking letter/number combination and if found, right click and choose delete for each entry

Please be cautious in identifying the correct entries in the registry because deleting other entries may cause serious problems with your PC

Step#12:Fixing With CWShredder
  • CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except CWShredder
  • Run the program by clicking 'fix' and letting it fix all CWS remnants.

Step#13:Fixing With About Buster

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.
  • Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory
  • double-click on aboutbuster.exe
  • When the tool opens press the OK button, then Start button, then the OK button
  • then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files.
  • If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • Post the log file in your next reply

Step#14:Saving and Using a Reg File

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg

Good Luck!
Daveai,

All seems to have gone smoothly. My notes and observations are posted first, About Buster and HJT logs last.

Step by step observations:

Step#6:Disable The Bad Service
I found the service called Workstation NetLogon Service . I was able to Double click on it and set the startup to disabled but there was no place to "click start" as directed in the instructions. However the properties for this service had the status listed as stopped.

Step#7:Stop The Running Processes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiir32.exe did not exist as a process in the task manager

Step#9:Cleaning With HijackThis
When running hijackthis the following entries did not exist. I know you said this would happen but (erring on the side of caution and providing too much info) I thought listing what wasn't there couldn't do any harm.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\komhp.dll/sp.html#10001

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\komhp.dll/sp.html#
10001

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Step#11: Delete the Registry Entries
When running RegLite the following entries did not exist.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ 11Fßä_#•ºÄÖ`I

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä_#•ºÄÖ`I

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä_#•ºÄÖ`I

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä_#•ºÄÖ`I

Step#12:Fixing With CWShredder
0 infected files were found and a notification at the end of the scan said that CoolWebSearch was not found on this system.

Step#13:Fixing With About Buster

The directions said that when About Buster opened I was to press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, then finally the Yes button. At that point it should have started scanning my computer for files.
It did not work like that. I have version 5.0. Once the tool was open there were only two buttons, "UPDATE" and "START REMOVAL". Directions at the top of the scan box said "To initialize this program click the start removal button." I really didn't like the sound of all that, but took a leap of faith and clicked the "START REMOVAL" button. It completed one pass, flashed a notice that everything had gone successfully and then generated this log:

Thanks.

I appreciate the detail you gave in the the narrative, and will save it so I can change the instructions once we finish here.

You did just right in the steps you mention.

The infecton came back. CWS About:Blank is well known for doing this, and is very stubborn. We need to repeat the instructions again.

Okay…new instructions reflecting the changes to the file names…and once you finish and reply back, please do not reboot until I send the next set of instructions.

Already completed this step

Step#3:Download CWShredder

CWShredder already downloaded. Do NOT use it yet

Step#4:Download About Buster

AboutBuster already downloaded. Please Do NOT use it yet

Step#5:Download Registrar Lite

Registrar Lite already downloaded.

Look for a service called Network Security Service .

C:\WINDOWS\appsd.exe

Step#8:Use HijackThis to Delete About Blank

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\appsd.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\ieyx.exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\eehnw.dll <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\appsd.dll <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntym32.exe <–this file

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#9:Cleaning With HijackThis

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\eehnw.dll/sp.html#37049

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [appsd.exe] C:\WINDOWS\appsd.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ieyx.exe] C:\WINDOWS\ieyx.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ntym32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntym32.exe

O23 - Service: Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\ieyx.exe" /s (file
missing)

click "fix checked"

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.
4. Copy and Paste each line of bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite one at a time:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY__ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I
  • Click Go
  • If LEGACY_ 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I exist it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.
If you get errors when copying and pasting the above bold entries into RegLite please try replacing the bold text with the following abbreviated line, changed as necessary for each entry eg currentcontrolset001, currentcontrolset002
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
    AND
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_
If this search finds the bad entries please look in the left hand column for the funny looking letter/number combination and if found, right click and choose delete for each entry

Please be cautious in identifying the correct entries in the registry because deleting other entries may cause serious problems with your PC

Step#12:Fixing With CWShredder
  • CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except CWShredder
  • Run the program by clicking 'fix' and letting it fix all CWS remnants.
Step#13:Fixing With About Buster

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.
  • Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory
  • double-click on aboutbuster.exe
  • When the tool opens press the OK button, then Start button, then the OK button
  • then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files.
  • If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • Post the log file in your next reply
Step#14:Saving and Using a Reg File

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Reboot your computer back to normal mode

Step#15:Scan and Post a New HJT log with other logs
  • Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

    Reconnect To The Internet

  • Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.
Thanks
daveai
Daveai, Persistant bugger isn't it. I'll go thru it again with the new instructions and post back later this evening. Question for you: I'm using Firefox for all internet browsing and Outlook (not express) for email. Are these programs ok or should I switch to something else? Also, although still infected my machine is responding much better now. Thanks, Suzanne
Daveai,

Ran everything again.
Not sure if the results are any better this time around. Here is what happened.

Step#9 & Step #11 - As before there were several files that were not present. Let me know if you need to know which ones they were.

Step#12 - CW shredder reported that it had restored 4 Internet Explorer files. Removing hosts file redirections reported none infected.
It also reported that CoolWebSearch was not found on this system.

Step#13 - When I ran About Buster the program hung up in mid scan but it did not hang the machine. I tried to end the task with cntrl-atl-dlt but that had no effect. I started About Buster again and it ran on top of the hung version. This is the file that is posted. Both versions closed once the file fromthe second scan was saved.

Everything else went smooth until I rebooted in normal mode. After I chose my profile I started to get "d3jx.exe Bad Image" pop up boxes (d3jx.exe Bad Image is written inthe blue hedder at the top of the box). They read "The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\XXXXXX.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation disk. (the file name xxxxxxx.dll is fake. 13 instances of this window poped up while I was writing this. I closed these boxes by clicking on the x in the right hand top corner. Once I clicked on the OK button that follows the text described above and it started a debugging type window. The path in the blue bar at the top was c:\windows\system\ntsd.exe. There was a lot of text inside it. I have a screen shot of it if you want/need to see it. Can images be posted on this forum?

That's all of it…. Here are the logs:

Let me know what comes next.
Thanks This one is persistant, isn't it? Your About:Blank infection is a new variant that is very resistant to removal. We've defeated it succdessfully every time so far, but I want to get some additional opinions before we hit it again. So, I'm going to do a little more analysis and research before responding with the next instructions. In the meantime… Please reboot normally and send me a fresh HJT log this evening…then do not reboot and limit your surfing as much as possible unitl I respond. I will post the next instructions sometime Thursday, probably in the afternoon or early evening. Thanks daveai
