After trying several spyware and adware removal programs I was able to remove the warning from my desktop. However, I still do not have control over it. My desktop is just white, I can't change the color or have access to the differet wallpapers in desktop properties. Here is my log, thanks for your help!

Hello angoramachinegun and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Install and Update Ewido:
  • Download and install Ewido security suite.
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
    • The program will prompt you to update, click the OK button.
    • The program will now go to the main screen.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Click on Start.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the updates are installed, close the program.
Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode, Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options…"
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

After Cleanup! is finished close the program.

Scan with Ewido:
  • Launch Ewido again.
  • Click on scanner.
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
[*]Click on Start Scan.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK.

[*]Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report to your desktop.

[*]Reboot the computer normally.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

SpySheriff

Exit Add or Remove Programs.

Delete the following, in bold, if found:

C:\Program Files\SpySheriff <-whole folder
C:\Windows\Desktop.html
C:\winstall.exe

Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpySheriff] C:\Program Files\SpySheriff\SpySheriff.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and go to Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download the smitfraud reg to your desktop.

Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

After the merged successfully prompt, Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the following folder:

C:\Windows\Prefetch

If there are any files inside the Prefetch folder, delete ALL of them. (Do NOT delete the folder. Just delete the files inside.)

Reboot your computer.

You should be able to change your desktop back to normal now.

Post the report from Ewido and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.
Thanks! I can change my desktop now, but I am unable to have the Windows XP appearance. There is only an option for windows classic style. Thanks again for all of your help!

One of the forum Experts, Miekiemoes uploaded a copy of her luna.msstyles to use.
Click on this link to download it. Click here

Unzip it and using windows explorer, move the luna.msstyles which is in the folder you unzipped to this folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna

Don't move it anywhere else except that folder!

When you have moved it, rightclick on your desktop > properties … and look if Windows XPstyle is now present again. Choose apply and OK.

If not, reboot first, and try again to select Windows XPstyle.

Let me know how the computer is running now.
Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
