my background just changed and now im getting popups to download spyware removal program. not sure what to do but thought id ask for help before doing anything. this is what my desktop background changed to and my logfile is below.

thanks Tomk. i scanned with windows defender and then i just ran an ad-aware 2007 scan and it cleaned 19 items (not including the 50 some cookies). right after i finished that scan a popup appeared saying that i am infected with the abebot trojan and wanting me to go buy some spyware removal program. what a bunch of idiots, infect computers with ads that connect you to their website where you can buy their stuff that infected you in the first place... i hate malware!

Hi bigbonelessjerk,

HijackThis is a powerful tool for fighting malware. Unfortunately, some of the "bad" programs have learned to hide from it. These programs recognize it by it's name. We can often "fool" them be changing it's name. That is what I need you to do.

Please open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe.

Run the newly named program and post a new HijackThis Log.

Please provide a list of uninstallable programs.

To Provide a List of Installed Programs
  • Run HijackThis.
  • Click Config>>Miscellaneous Tools>>Open Uninstall Manager>>Save List
  • Save list to Desktop
  • Copy the Notepad list and Paste it into this thread.

So your next reply will have:
  • HijackThis log
  • Installed Programs list

its getting bad now. tons of popups to buy spyware scanners. there was a new spyware program installed that i got rid of and 3 seperate security warnings in the running programs beside the clock in the lower right corner. heres a new logfile run under the name of hjtspyware.exe and a list of installed programs. thanks again for your help!

i dont know man, im writing this on a different computer on the network because i noticed that avast antivirus had mysteriously shut down. i figured id just restart and it would load avast again. now i get a beep and a box saying "unable to log you on because of an account restriction". the name is right and there is no password so i dont know what to do. guest account is disabled and i just use the one administrator account, no other accounts set up. i tried booting into safe mode and get the same box. any ideas? this other computer is on the network and just running windows firewall with NOD32 for protection. no problems with it so far, just ran adaware and it came up totally clean.

Try this:

You obvioulsy know how to boot into safe mode. Reboot and use your f8 key like your booting into safe mode. Instead of selecting "Safe Mode", please select "Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)".

If doesn't work, you may need to make a boot disk. Do you have a CD burner?

If it works:

Download VundoFix to your desktop

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

If the above directions do not work, please try:
  • Disconnect your computer from the internet. Unplug from your router/hub or unplug your modem, whatever it takes.
  • Reboot your machine and see if you can "get in".
  • Post back to let me know what happened

Also, please provide the following information:
  • Is this a home network or business network?
  • If need be, are you capable of taking this hard drive and installing it into the working pc?
  • Do you have a Windows OS CD?

last good config option didnt work. i have a cd burner and blank cds. home network. the infected comp is a laptop so i cant pull the harddrive. i do have a windows XP CD. im connected wirelessly so i turned off the modem but still couldnt get into windows. whenever i try anything other than the username and pass that i know are good it just says recheck and make sure theyre right. when i try the right name and pass it says 'unable to log you on because of an account restriction.'

The problems you are experiencing appear to be caused by the Vundo infection that you have. It happens. :rant2:

I have two things for you to try.

First:

Go here: http://www.loginrecovery.com/ and follow steps 1, 2, and 3 on the left side of the page. This is free if you are willing to wait possibly up to 72 hours.

If this doesn't work, you will need to do a Windows Repair install. Good information about this procedure can be found here: http://www.michaelst...pairinstall.htm
Please read the information presented including the warnings. If it comes to this and you need help performing the procedure, post back and we'll try to give you additional guidance.

the login recovery doesnt work. according to them the password was not changed. it still says 'couldnt log in because of an account restriction' if its the right username and pass, or just 'check to make sure that your name and password are correct' if i try anything else. :( im looking at the repair install stuff now and will try that. assuming that that works and i dont have to do a clean install will the virus/trojan or whatever the infection is still be active? if i do have to do a clean install should i wipe the drive and start all over to be safe? thanks for the guidance. :)

bigbonelessjerk, Unfortunately your fears are well founded. Once you get your operating system running, you will still need to clean your system. The Vundo infection I mentioned before is not the only infection on your system, it is just the one I believe caused you not to be able to access. Keep me updated on your repair install.

good news! the repair install worked and im really happy to see the right wallpaper and that everything is back to normal. unfortunately its back to normal in the sense that i can logon and get lots of popups to buy spyware scanners. ;)

thanks for your help and continued help, Tomk. im sure that well get this thing fixed yet. :D

heres a new hjt log. i ran vundo fix and it found something and fixed it then asked to be restarted. i just said fine and forgot the log. just reran it and it came up clean with a blank logfile. if theres a backup log somewhere i can post that.
