My mother's computer is infected with w32\bagle.dll.gen. Stinger detects the file windows\system32\wiwshost.exe and deletes it, but of course everytime you reboot, another copy is loaded. Can anyone help me?

Here is my hjt log

Hello cheesed, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. You have at least two trojans, I checked my version of Stinger and it reports it does remove W32/Bagle? I have none to test it on, I can only say my version is 2.5.4 built on May 2 2005, and I may be outdated. Bagle makes changes that you will need to be concerned about, like a reinstallation of your antivirus software may be in order. You may wish to discuss this with Norton Tech Support.
I will let you read about each item so you can take the necessary action.

1) http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojbagledlk.html

2) http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojnetdenya.html

3) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

4) Ewido trojan scanner: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread.

  7. 5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winshost.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winshost.exe
    Troj/BagleDl-K
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [firewall_anti] C:\WINDOWS\firewall_anti.exe
    trojnetdenya
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winshost.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winshost.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
    http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

    C:\WINDOWS\firewall_anti.exe >>> file

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winshost.exe >>> file

Looks like these trojans were running from Prefetch, please do this:
Locate C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and open it. Delete the contents of the folder (NOT THE FOLDER) if there are many choose Edit then Select all then Delete. You may not be able to remove them all, don't be concerned unless any have the name of the items we need to remove. Here is some information about the Prefetch for you:
    http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270-5165773.html
    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1683520,00.asp

CCleaner will clean the temp stuff for us:
Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log along with the Ewido scan log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

    Thanks…pskelley

The sophos links were page not found. My mother said that has been happening alot lately. I hope they were just for information.

The HKLM you wanted me to fix with hijack were not there. It looks like ewido may have taken care of it.

The files you wanted me to delete were also gone. I think for the same reason as above.

I deleted the prefetch files and ran c cleaner, but when I rebooted, it still took five minutes.

Here is my ewido log and hijack log. I will repeat your same instructions if you want me to.

Hello cheesed, Have you tried to access those links now that the trojans have been removed? Let me know if you can access the information now, the trojans actually turn off your antivirus software, etc. Here is just a few things I see in the first link:
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojbagledlk.html
Side effects Turns off anti-virus applications
Downloads code from the internet
Installs itself in the Registry
Troj/BagleDl-K is a Trojan downloader which attempts to download and execute a file from several listed remote websites.
When first run the Trojan copies itself to the Windows system folder as winshost.exe and drops a component wiwshost.exe also into the Windows system folder. The dropped component is then loaded and executed. The following registry entries are also created by the Trojan so as to auto-start on computer reboot:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
winshost.exe
%SYSTEM%\winshost.exe
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
winshost.exe
%SYSTEM%\winshost.exe
The Trojan will attempt to terminate various anti-virus and security related processes while trying to downoad components from remote websites into %WINDOWS%\_re_file.exe.
I would check with Norton Tech Support and let them know what trojan you removed. I am sure they will have you reinstall here antivirus software.

Second link:
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojnetdenya.html
Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.bp
(my guess is both trojans came in via email)
Troj/Netdeny-A is a Trojan for the Windows platform.
When first run Troj/Netdeny-A copies itself to \firewall_anti.exe and creates the file \firewall_anti.exe.dll. The file firewall_anti.exe.dll is also detected by Sophos as Troj/Netdeny-A.
The following registry entry is created to run firewall_anti.exe on startup:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
firewall_anti
\firewall_anti.exe
Registry entries are created under:

Troj/Netdeny-A also injects itself to the Windows Shell_TrayWnd process to stealth itself.
Troj/Netdeny-A may be downloaded by the Bagle family of worms.

So as you can see above, this worm was probably blocking your ability to access the Sophos site. I would also discuss this with Norton, as they should instruct you to update and run a complete system scan after you reinstall. I can't stress to you enough the importance of contacting your AV supplier as there is little doubt your software was compromised.

Your log is clean now and Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

There is also a very good chance those trojans has infected your System Restore files. If this is the case and you needed to use System Restore for a valid reason, your computer would get infected. You need to purge those files which is the process of turning off System Restore, rebooting the computer then turning it back on. This will give you a fresh restore point with clean files. Here are the actual instructions:

Here is one site that deals with email infections: http://pangea.stanford.edu/computerinfo/wi…emailvirus.html You might want to google for more and cover how important safe email proceedures are today with so many threats out there with your Mom.

PSK,

Thanks for all your help! I will print out the information for my mother. I think she has learned her lesson. I appreciate your sentiment about thanking a solidier. I lost my cousin in Iraq in December.

By the way, please tell me it took you years and years to learn all this so I don't feel like a complete idiot.
I am so sorry you had to give someone close to you :( my greatest fear is that Americans will become complacent and forget why your cousin died. Most people can look back to 9/11 but this battle of good against evil has been going on forever. I even try to do my small part in the fight each day. Least we forget, here is a reminder by Darrly Worley.

By the way, please tell me it took you years and years to learn all this so I don't feel like a complete idiot.

Computers were new to me as during many, many years in restaurant management Point of Sales was about as close as I get to computing. About six years ago I bought my first, an old Compaq 7360 with Win98SE. I managed to get it plugged in and in an effort to learn I drifted into general troubleshooting. About two years ago I bought a Dell and found my way to Dell Forum where I located the malware forum because of an issue I was fighting. I must say I have had some really great teachers, all of which I pointed to in the all clean information. I will not tell you it is easy, and malware changes all of the time, often I feel I am not up to the task but it has to be done, all part of the same battle. Wish your Mom my best and if you ever want to learn more, just ask any member of the team. I wish you safe surfing…Phil
