To Whom It May Concern:

For the last week I have been trying to get rid of azesearch from my computer.
I found your website in the search for information on how to get rid of it. So far most of it has been removed. But something is still stuck here. My browser is hijacked everytime I boot up. :( I have run Spy Subtract, Adaware SE Professional, X-cleaner (freeware version), XoftSpy, ScanSpyware, Spyware Doctor and recently Hijack this. No need to say that some of the aforementioned software finds the garbage in question but doesn't remove it untill you buy the product. For all I know some may even be dumping it onto my system. Here is my hijack this log:

If you can spot anything else that doesn't belong please let me know, this is driving me crazy. :rant2:

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Andromedon
Hi Andromedon, Welcome to TomCoyote forum :) You said:

If you can spot anything else that doesn't belong please let me know, this is driving me crazy.

Well, I sure see some, if you want my help getting rid of it, follow these directions in the posted order.

1) This one: C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe I think you should discuss with Verizon, make them tell you how to get rid of it, if they get enough complaints, they will stop putting junk like this on folks computers. They are my ISP also.
Here is the information about it: http://castlecops.com/startuplist-1690.html

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

3) Ewido trojan scanner: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread.

  7. 4) You will need to turn off your Spyware tools as it will interfere with the HJT fix. I see SpySubtract, SpywareGuard and SpywareDoctor. Adwatch by Lavasoft must be turned completely off or it WILL stop the fix. It may need to be uninstalled??
In the Ad-Watch window have them check the Active option instead of Automatic and it will stop undoing your fix.
    1. Right-click on Ad-watch icon in the System Tray.
2.Go to Ad-Watch Settings and uncheck Load Ad-Watch on Windows start up
    3. Again in Ad-Watch Settings Select Unload Ad-watch.
You do not need to be online when you are using HJT, it may be best to stay offline until you finish and restart all of your security programs.

    5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.top20results.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AntivirusGold] C:\Program Files\AntivirusGold\AntivirusGold.exe /h
Malware masquerading as an antivirus - also installs the Winnook TROJAN!
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Intel system tool] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hookdump.exe
    Added by the Troj/Spyre-C Trojan! A.K.A WIN32.TOPANTISPYWARE.L
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    6) SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
    http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

    7) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

    C:\Program Files\AntivirusGold\ >>> folder

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\hookdump.exe >>> file

Locate C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and open it. Delete the contents of the folder (NOT THE FOLDER) if there are many choose Edit then Select all then Delete. You may not be able to remove them all, don't be concerned unless any have the name of the items we need to remove. Here is some information about the Prefetch for you:
    http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6270-5165773.html
    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1683520,00.asp

    8) Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

    Thanks…pskelley

    PURGE SYSTEM RESTORE
When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instruction:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…912274039?OpenD
pskelley,

Thank you for the warm welcome. :wavey: So far your suggestions seem to have worked. At least the browser hijacking seems to have stoped. :P Unfortunately I couldn't follow your last instruction to read the symantec document. When I clicked on the link you provided I received the following error:

Please check these files and let me know if there are any other 'critters' that I missed. :D

I really appreciate the help, this has really been difficult to clean out. I never really thought that people could be that invasive, but then that must have been the result of a bored hacker.

As for the Verizon file is there a way to remove it safely or do I need to talk to my ISP provider? My anti-virus program constantly warns me about that particular file but I've never been sure if I could delete it safely.

Could you make some recomedations about better spyware scanners? I've erased most of the scanners I had running because most of them were demos. I still have SpySubtract, Ad-Aware SE Professional, XoftSpy, Ewido Security Suite and CCleaner still running. Maybe that's overkill; I would appreciate your imput.

I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner but I have been getting ready for a new college semester and this is the first chance I've had to resolve the problem.

Again thanks for the help,

Andromedon
Hello Dan, I appreciate that you have problems and understand your need to rid yourself of them, but you have posted into another member thread. :( Please see this:

Please do not post your logs in someone else's thread. Start a new thread by clicking on New Topic. Do not post your problems into other open logs saying "I have the same issue, here is my log" etc. This is too confusing for everyone involved. Also, please stay with your original topic when posting follow ups.

I will take a moment to tell you this, your HJT.exe is poorly positioned and that will slow down your repair. Use this information to place your HJT.exe in a permanent folder: http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=14401 as you are running from a Temporary one now: C:\DOCUME~1\dan\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.984\HijackThis.exe

Hello Andromedon, I apologize for Dan, I am sure he did not mean to post in your topic. :(

Let me also apologize also for that bad link, I usually check them all, but must not have checked that one. Before I post the link I must say I indicated clearly that you should wait until you are clean before purging System Restore and such is not the case yet. While it would have caused no harm, there is no need to do it twice. Here is the link:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam and do wait for the "all clean" before using it.A review of the most recent HJT log indicates a couple of items that still need removed. I will also give you instructions for removing the Verizon item as per your request below. I will also respond to each question below either in this post or before we finish with the repair. Thanks…Phil

So we can remove the bad file we must stop the item from running. Open Task Manager then the Processes tab. Locate and end process on: IPClient.exe (make sure you get the right one)

You will need to turn off the items in #4 above as we discussed last post. If you did check the first two lines then something is stopping them from being removed. I would run HJT offline with your security turned off, then put it back before gone back online.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
Should not be hidden, but if you can't see it, then enable hidden files as before. I believe we need just the file, let me know if that stops the messages.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l >>> file only
Restart the computer and post a new log along with any comments you think I should have.

I really appreciate the help, this has really been difficult to clean out. I never really thought that people could be that invasive, but then that must have been the result of a bored hacker.

I have to tell you this one is fairly easy, you should click a few of the other post, some take several weeks to complete. This is all about $$$, that is all malware writers are interested in.

As for the Verizon file is there a way to remove it safely or do I need to talk to my ISP provider? My anti-virus program constantly warns me about that particular file but I've never been sure if I could delete it safely.

I will remove it, but I do think you should complain to Verizon or your ISP, perhaps if they get enough complaints they will stop this practice.

Could you make some recomedations about better spyware scanners?

I will leave you with information from four of the most respected folks in malware removal. I will add a few comments myself.

I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner but I have been getting ready for a new college semester and this is the first chance I've had to resolve the problem.

This is no problem as long as too much time does not go by giving new infections a chance to get onboard, we want to clean them out then place programs in the way so they can't get back. While there are no 100% guarantees, good programs, well maintained and careful online habits will go a long way towards keeping you safe online.

Thanks…pskelley

Hopefully I'm finally clean. I was able to access the symantec document. So far everything seems to be working properly again. I will run a virus scan once I log off just to make sure that the warnings don't pop up again. :)

Don't worry about Dan's post, accidents happen. I've been guilty once or twice myself since I don't normaly post in forums. :D

As for the Malware writers lets hope one day they log in at work and find themselves working on a machine so loaded with their 'products' that they can't get anything done and that it takes a couple of months for them just to clear out the garbage. :weee:

Again I really appreciate the help to remove this junk.

Andromedon
Ok, we gave the computer a good cleaning and I see no evidence of malware in your HJT log :) I think you are good to go. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html

When looking at your programs you asked about, the first thing I ask myself is how did this stuff get by it, so let's take a look:
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojspyrec.html
Look under all the tabs, I can't see anything about how it accesses the computer. Here is what Trend Micro has to say: http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyc…NTSPY.C&VSect;=T = This memory-resident Trojan arrives from the following Web site posing as a legitimate anti-spyware program:
looking at that information it seems just clicking wrong on the popup caould infect you, looking at the other trojan might tell us more, when one gets onboard it will often pave the way for others, but turning off security porgrams, even opening certain ports. VIP is to always close any add by clicking on the X in the corner. Just the simple act of assuming that a yes or no choice is safe is wrong. I have seen it written recently that just passing your mouse of the ad banner at certain sites can can infect you?
A look at the other item indicates it is part of the same trojan. My feeling here, and I could be wrong, is that the security programs should have protected you and that human intervention allowed this infection.

I still have SpySubtract, Ad-Aware SE Professional, XoftSpy, Ewido Security Suite and CCleaner still running

I do not use SpySubtract, Ad-Aware SE Professional, XoftSpy though I do run Ad-aware SE Personal 1.6 which is freeware. Those products appear to have a good reputation, I suggest a google search if you want more feedback on them. Put the word "review" without the quotes in front of the software's name.

CCleaner is a great free utility but it does not run so is using no resources. It has a free forum for questions and updates regularly. It is a powerful tool and I would use default settings until you learn more about it. If you use the registry cleaning function, you will be prompted to back it up so be sure you do, the feature is there to protect you.

Ewido, another great tool, but I am assuming you are using the free trial version so see this:
This setup contains the free as well as the plus-version of the ewido security suite. After the installation, a free 14-day test version containing all the extensions of the plus-version will be activated. At the end of the test phase, the extensions of the plus version are deactivated and the freeware version can be used unlimited times. The purchased license code of the plus version can be entered at any time.
Once the trial period is over you will have to make the call to retain or remove the program. Looks like you can continue to manually update the databases and use the scan function. I would see no reason to keep it running and would either remove it or turn it off in msconfig and run it manually if you feel the need to scan.

While I point to the above links these are the programs I run, I point out all are freeware but McAfee and I do go places most folks would not when checking some logs.
Spybot S&D v1.4
Ad-aware SE Personal v1.6
SpywareBlaster
SpywareGuard
IE-Spyad
(tutorials are here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorials.html )
Zone Alarm free
McAfee VSO

You will see these programs mentioned by the folks above, without being properly maintained they will fail to protect you.
I will close this thread in a couple of days in case you have a last question.

Good Luck and safe surfing…Phil

If you are reading this information…thank a teacher, If you are reading it in English…thank a soldier.
pskelley, Thank you for the information. It's been a big help. :D The reason the first 'Hijack This' fix didn't work was because I couldn't figure out how to disable SpySubtract. Once I could the fix worked. I used to run Spybot S & D until I had the misfortune to serf to a website that had been heavily infected with viruses. You name it I had it. Spybot kept saving some of the viruses in question in the System Restore file and kept trying to clean out a group (I forget which one) of malware that kept reinstalling itself everytime I rebooted after a supposed spyware sweep. I finally had to format my hard drive and re-install the software. Needless to say it was a nightmare that lasted a week and a half. After that I stopped running Spybot. I also used to run Zone Alarm but not for long. It slowed down and even interfered with my computer and really interfered with my web browser. Web Pages and files seemed to take forever to download. I finally had to delete it. I'm not really sure why this happened. Luckly I'm connected to a router that does provide some protection. It seems that any firewall I run interferes. Probably I still have something set incorrectly; I've checked several times but it still looks alright to me. For a time I used Guard Wall and it seemed to work well but two or three months ago it became ineffective and I had an epidemic of spyware land on my system, so I deleted it. :( I'm wondering, with the combination of software I have right now is there a firewall that I could run that wouldn't cause this kind of problem? I'm not sure I should be posting this on this thread as it is dedicated to the removal of spy/malware. If i'm not supposed to please excuse me for doing so and let me know. I also have a question about Windows XP Service Pack 2; where would that be posted? Again thank you for your help, I really appreciate it. My brother is coming for a visit and bringing my 12 year old neice; I didn't want to boot up in front of them and suddenly have my neice see something ugly. One of the sites that the browser hijacker kept sending me to was a porn site. Keep up the good work, Andromedon
Hello andromedon, A little feedback on your last post. :)

I used to run Spybot S & D until I had the misfortune to serf to a website that had been heavily infected with viruses.

Keep in mind that both Ad-aware and Spybot (unless you activate the TeaTimer function) are passive programs. They do not block anything as you surf, they will remove most adware and some malware if it gets to your computer. I will say that the TeaTimer function is realtime protection if activated but most folks think if you have SpywareGuard onboard, as you do, that TT is not nexessary as they do the same think. Here is some information about TeaTimer fyi.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/33.html
http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/ss/hosts_6.htm
I can also report that Spybot does not "Save" anything in System Restore. Some malware can get into those backup files but Spybot does not do it. Spybot does have a Recovery area where it makes backups of items it removes for safety within the Spybot program. I have used Spybot for around six years on multiple computers and have never had to replace anything it removed. If you need more information about the freeware product, you can get it here:
http://net-integration.net/spybotsd.html which is the home forum of Spybot.

I also used to run Zone Alarm but not for long. It slowed down and even interfered with my computer and really interfered with my web browser

I would say that a firewall is necessary anymore and I do not believe the internet connection firewall in SP1 does the job. Perhaps the SP2 firewall does? I am testing it on a new computer now. Your best move if you can't seem to run a third party firewall would be to move to SP2. There are things you must know before you download:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx If you want to take a look at how your SP1 ICF is doing, here is a free port check: https://image.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

For a time I used Guard Wall and it seemed to work well but two or three months ago it became ineffective and I had an epidemic of spyware land on my system, so I deleted it.

If you ever want to check up on a product, this is the place to do it:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

I'm not sure I should be posting this on this thread as it is dedicated to the removal of spy/malware. If i'm not supposed to please excuse me for doing so and let me know.

Our discussion about security programs is fine, keep in mind that we are volunteers, and here because we wish to be, not because we have to be.

I also have a question about Windows XP Service Pack 2; where would that be posted?

If the link I provided above does not answer your questions, let me know what other information you need. If I can't provide it I can usually point you in the right direction.

Have a great visit with your family…Phil :wavey:
pskelley, :wavey: I read the pages you posted and they were a big help. Do you know if SpySubtract and Spyware Guard can peacefully co-exist? I've tried running both at the same time but something weird happens. My start page, and search page kept being changed to 'none'. Then both programs would want confirmation of the changes. This would keep up until I closed the windows. I finally had to disable the 'Monitor Browser Settings For Attempted Hijacks' option in SpySubtract. :wtf: Also when I activate Ad-Watch, Spyware Guard disappears from the system tray; it's still running but I can't access it at all until I unload Ad-Watch. :( Am I missing a setting somewhere or is it simply a case of incompatibility in both cases? As for Windows XP service pack 2 I tried to install it once. I was working on a clean install of my system. After I installed it the system rebooted then it crashed. I was black screened; the system wouldn't boot. The system had to be reformatted and the software re-installed. This was a bit of a shock. I haven't tried to install it again. I'm still not sure what I did wrong. If you have any ideas I'd really appreciate hearing them, Andromedon

Do you know if SpySubtract and Spyware Guard can peacefully co-exist?

No I do not, I have never run the intermute product. Looks like it was purchased by Trend Micro recently. I would suggest you may get that information from Tech Support: http://www.intermute.com/support/index.html
I can only remember one instance where a HP computer would not run SpywareGuard on a local clients computer. No matter what I tried it would not work and this computer had no SpySubtract on it.

Also when I activate Ad-Watch, Spyware Guard disappears from the system tray

Can't help you with that one either not even having run Ad-watch. I know it is very powerful program and at times we actually ave to uninstall it to use HJT successfully. I have never had an issue with the free Zone Alarm. My daughter once install ZA Pro and her comper went crazy, locking up, etc. I suggesed she remove ZA Pro and all went back to normal. SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard were installed on the computer.
Since you must pay for the product to use Ad-watch you may find an answer at Support/Home Users: http://www.lavasoft.de/

As for Windows XP service pack 2 I tried to install it once

If you are in the states or Canada there is a help line, they will help you troubleshoot the installation on a toll free number. If you are out of the area, I would search for your local version of that number. The number in US/Canada is 888-SP2-HELP
Here are a list of things our need to know bfore attempting the installation: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

Wish I could help you more
Thanks…pskelley
Pskelley, :wavey: Thanks for your help and the information. So far my system has remained clear so, thanks to your assistance and advice I finally seem to be back on track. :D I really appreciate all the time you took to help me clean out my system. Hopefully I won't have to do this again for awhile. Now I know where to send anyone who has a similar problem. Again thank you for your time and help; keep up the good work, Andromedon
