Exasperated is what I am…Something keeps trying to dial out of my system. ZoneAlarm blocks it OK, but I want to track it down and put a stop to it. I've run fully updated versions of AntiVir, avast!, AVG, PC-cillin and ZoneAlarm's AV, as well as A-squared, TDS-3, CounterSpy, Spy Sweeper, Spybot S&D, AdAware, Trojan Hunter, SpywareKiller, CWShredder & About:Buster. I've run every systems peeper I can think of. I'm not savvy enough to get anything useful out of ZA, VisualZone and ZoneLog Analyzer, other than that Explorer has tried to reach some destination IPs called "bombur.cmc.net" and "bofur.cmc.net," which I can't seem to find info on. After more than a week, I'm resorting to HJT and requesting any hints from anyone out there. Many thanks.

:rant2: Followup to my earlier post "Exasperated." Now I'm more than exasperated… After all my trouble searching for a dialer, it turns out that some software I installed must have changed the Connections setting in my Internet Options: I always have it set to "Never dial a connection," but it was switched to "Always dial my default connection." After resetting it, there've been no more attempts to dial out. My HJT app is now cleared and ready for new action. Thanks to anyone who might've given some thought to reviewing the HJT log for me. This thread can now be moved or deleted. Thanks again.
 Greetings, LDTate: Firstly, thanks for responding! Now I'm just worried - you asked for an updated HJT log, so it follows. I did finally find out that bombur and bofur are local ISPs, but that's just not helpful to me (yet). Anyway, here's the latest:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press the F8 key until the startup menu appears.

Choose the Safe Mode option then press Enter.

To configure Windows to show all files

Do the following:
In Windows, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Greetings LDTate: done and done. After all that nerve-wracking excision, here's the latest HJT log per yer request. So far, my system is running just fine, no hinky weirdness. Many thanks. Standing by…

Good Job

Looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Do the following:
In Windows, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, check Hide file extensions for known file types.

Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, uncheck Show hidden files and folders.

Click Apply.
Click OK.

To disable Windows Me System Restore
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.

——————————————————————————–
Note: If the System icon is not visible, click "View all Control Panel options" to display it.
——————————————————————————–

On the Performance tab click File System.

Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore.

Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.

Now enable.

To enable Windows Me System Restore
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Performance tab click File System.
On the Troubleshooting tab, uncheck Disable System Restore.
Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D
:) LDTate: all went well, installed IESPYAD & purged System Restore. Already have SpywareBlaster & Spywareguard, ZoneAlarm Security Suite and AVG (as well as 3 other antivirus apps). Jinxdragon is purring like a kitten (I named my system after Jinx, a very much-loved Balinese cat that was taken - how ironically - by a coyote). I'm very grateful for your help; I've read of Tom Coyote's problems and can sympathise - I've been "self-employed" for the last 3 years myself, but once I win that Lotto you guys'll be on my A-list. Although I haven't posted much, I do peruse the forum regularly and glean a lot of knowledge from it, so it'd be a dayam shame to lose you guys. Best of luck!

so it'd be a dayam shame to lose you guys. Best of luck!

I don't forsee that happening any time soon if at all.

Great job

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help

Peace be with you :wavey:
