I have been suffering from popups for the last two weeks (something like: www.paypopup.com; loadingnewwebsite.com; www.nuker.com, and so on). Also, time by time, I get error messages when starting the system such as: "C:\windows\system32\bwpanui.dll DllGetVersion".

I am using Windows xp sp2. I have scanned the computer with Norton Antivirus, spybot and Ad-ware SE , and a lot of spyware have were removed. I also have disabled the restoring point of Windows XP and cleaned the recycle bin. After all these, I still have the same problems. Here is the log. someone please help me. Thanks a lot (there are some Chinese characters in it and you may not read them with your pc).

Hi Alan. Thank you so much for your response. Help is desperately needed!

So far I have done the follows:

1. scanned my pc with Norton Antivirus (with the latest virus definations, the following the same)

2. scanned online with Panda, found some adware, but could not remove them, here is the report from Panda:

Incident Status Location

Spyware:Spyware/BargainBuddy No disinfected Windows Registry
Adware:Adware/CWS No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\home\Favorites\Fun & Games

Adware:Adware/BaiduBar No disinfected E:\media players\RMfix\hyrm.exe[in124.exe]

3. scanned my pc with Spybot and removed:
-IsearchTech.SideFind
-IsearchTech.PowerScan

However, I scanned again with Spybot, the above two adware are still there although they have been removed successfully last time!

4. Scanned with PestPatrol, found and removed:
-AntivirusGold
-BargainBuddy
-ISTbar

The same happens: they still remain there no matter how many times I scan and remove them with PestPatrol.

5. Scanned with Ad-ware SE, and removed some spyware and adware.

6. Scanned with Microsoft Anti-spyware Beta.

7. I removed CWS by CWS_delcwssk and CWShredder; removed Look2me by l2mfix.exe

Finnally, I did not have any popup for the whole day, but the above mentioned adware still remain.

Except the above mentioned stuborn adware and spyware, some other problems:
- the Norton antivirus Auto-protection is sometimes disabled automatically
- whenever Windows startup, I see the system configuration window (the same window I see when I run command "msconfig" ) although I have it checked out everytime.

The following is my HJT log:

I am running Win XP Chinese ver, so there are some chinese charaters in the log you may not read. however I am quite sure they are good software and I have been using them for many years.

I really appreciate your help.
Liu
Hello Liu and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [.symantec] C:\WINDOWS\system\rvchost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msxct] msxct.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [A2MIp5] C:\WINDOWS\dttjfirl.exe

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)

Optional items to check with HijackThis.
You have Adware Agent on your computer. It is not recommended for the following reasons: no privacy policy (1); uses ActiveX "kill bit" database stolen from SpywareGuide.com. You can read about it here. I recommend removing it with Add/Remove Programs.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adware Agent] "E:\adware removal\Adware Agent 4.31 oo?ˉ°?\Adware Agent.exe"

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

Adware Agent << Optional item described above.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system\rvchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\dttjfirl.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\home\Favorites\Fun & Games
E:\adware removal\Adware Agent 4.31 << Only if fixed above

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

msxct.exe

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click Options < Advanced and uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • After it has completed it's process, click Exit.
Caution : It is not recommended to use the 'Issues' tab as it is known to find legitimate items.

Step 6
Reboot normally and go to Start < Run and type msconfig in the box. This opens the System Configuration Utility. On the Startup tab, make sure everything is checked. On the General tab, check Normal Startup - load all device drivers and service. Click Apply and OK. If it asks to restart the computer do not restart it.

Step 7
Scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Hi Alan,

Thank you so much!

I don't know how you find out which one to delete from my system, but I did what you suggested me to do, and the result is wonderful. I mean I have abused my pc for several days, and I have no more popups, and my Norton Antivirus works perfect now. The only negative is I still have a few adware (such as Adknowledge.com, etc.) whenever I scan my pc with Ad-ware SE, Pestpatrol and Spybot S&D. But it doesn't bother me at all since I did not find they are affecting the performance of my pc.

Again, thank you so much for your work!

btw, I am almost sure that Flashget was one of the sources of the adware/spyware in my system.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
