I posted a couple of days ago and have tried to delete that post as the log is out of date (I tried fixing things in my own inept way) and I have a new log and am posting again. Sorry if I'm breaking forum rules by posting again, maybe someone will tell me if I am.

Would someone please check my log for me? AVG Free has picked up 8 Trojans in the past 7 days. Since getting the first Trojan I've had problems with continual pop ups in IE. Today I installed Firefox and am not getting the pop ups so far using it. The other strange thing is that when I start the computer I get an error message after my desktop loads. It says:

RUNDLL
Error loading c:\WINDOWS\system32\vggrrnww.dll
The specified module could not be found

(I think is says module, though maybe it was 'folder').

Here is the log:

Hello Shalotus and welcome to TomCoyote,

Please do the following:

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi…fo/bt_side.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi…arch.yahoo.com/
O3 - Toolbar: HP view - {B2847E28-5D7D-4DEB-8B67-05D28BCF79F5} - c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\HPDTLK02.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PrintDrive] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vggrrnww.dll",setvm

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vggrrnww.dll<=file
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

======
Combofix
  • Download this file - combofix.exe
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please post the ComboFix log and a new hijackthis log.
Thank you so much for your help.

I was able to follow your instructions up until I was asked to remove C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VGGRRNWW.DLL<=FILE It was not there.

When the system rebooted I no longer had the RUNDLL error message I've been getting for the past week.

Here is the log file from Combofix:

Do I have to turn back on the Real-time Protection again in Windows Defender now? I wasn't sure if I needed to wait for the all clear first. (I haven't done it yet)
Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0008BA74-4E09-4145-963B-0602CD986809} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjj.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1557B435-8242-4686-9AA3-9265BF7525A4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cgbgintq.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E2593471-67D9-441F-A593-F7C3D6F606BE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtst.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tstwa.ini.ren<=file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tstwa.bak1.ren<=file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtst.dll.ren<=file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jjjlm.ini.ren<=file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jjjlm.bak1.ren<=file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjj.dll.ren<=file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbadd.bak2.ren<=file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbadd.ini.ren<=file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbadd.bak1.ren<=file

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log. How is you computer running now?
Go ahead an enable your real-time protection for Windows Defender now.
Hello Susan

I followed your instructions and here is the new log. My computer appears to be working fine, no pop up ads and no error messages on start up.

Is it safe for me to turn back on System Restore now? I turned it off a couple of days ago.
Yes, please do turn on your System Restore.
I saw that you had references to two javas – the Sun version of java and the Microsoft version-msjava. Sun will be supporting Java and Microsoft will be dropping java so let’s get Sun’s latest version.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hello Shalotus,

Everything appears to be fine. But please do one more thing. Let's run different virus scan.

Please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at
http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
**Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post (reply) with the results. Then if everything looks good, I will give you the final instructions.
Here is the report from kaspersky. It has occured to me that I've been accessing websites where I've entered sensitive information like credit card details. You have a few old emails present on your computer. You might as well delete them since they are infected.

Delete the following files please:
C:\hp\bin\KillWind.exe<=file
C:\Program Files\30+ Free Patience\navExcel\NHInstaller_ka.exe<=file

Please let me know if you got those deleted. You may want to run another scan just to verify that you were able to get everything. Quarantine files are no risk since are quarantined.
I've followed those steps and here are the new scan results followed by a new hijack this log:

Good work Shalotus,

Your logs appear to be clean. Kaspersky scan showed quarantined files which are no threat. Step 2 will take care of the _infected restore files.

You can delete the tools we used.
ComboFix

STEP 1.
Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
STEP 2.
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

STEP 3.
======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  • More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.

Susan
I am so happy and grateful to have a clean computer again! Thank you so much for your help, I will follow your advice and keep everything updated. Sharon
