Aurora MediaTickets Blues

6 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Someone spoofed a trusted email and I fell for it. As a result when I boot up and log in (XP Pro) IE usually opens automatically and tries to go to MediaTickets site. Then every couple minutes a popup titled Aurora with junk in it pops up. I downloaded and ran HJT and am enclosing the log.

I am sooo frustrated!!! have tried Ad-Aware and SpySweeper. No luck!!! Keep getting random named files running in Task Manager. I will be so grateful. Thanks in advance for anything you can do.

Here is my HJT log.

Hello bdrieb, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. You do have a nasty infection and a couple of trojans I do not think are part of the infection? Thanks to Swandog46 and miekiemoes we have a new canned fix. You best chance for success is to follow the directions carefully.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please go to the following website
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?dow…050515010747824
. Click on Spyware Utilities.
. Then click on Nail/Aurora Fix
download Nailfix.exe
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and put a check mark beside:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

We will have more to do.
Thanks…pskelley

Thanks for the reply. Did as follows and system looks so much better. So far don't see any Aurora or MediaTicket evidence.

Here is the latest scan that you requestd.

Could you please post another log that is single spaced. Once the log is created by HJT, just copy and paste from that log. I am not sure how you did this? Word wrap perhaps? Thanks…Phil

EDIT
I took a look at the log and I can tell you it looks good. There are a couple of issues I wish to address and if you can't get get a single space log let me know as you did the hard part already.

This is how to get a log: Open HJT and click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile" Wait until HJT opens the notepad for you that will take a minute. Then click on Edit at the top and click on Select All. Point your mouse and right click and copy, then point your mouse at this thread right click and click on paste. That should give you a single spaced log, I will review it as soon as possible after you post. Thanks. :)
Here is attempt to provide a non-wrapped HJT log.
So far your guidance has been remarkable. Virtually no traces of anything obvious, of course, what lurks beneath?

I thought it went away but it still occurs when I try to go to www.symantec.com, it gets changed to http:///?%20sysmantec.com. Maybe the other issues you indicated need to fixe will take care of it. By the way, this all started when someone spoofed an email from the university Res IT consultants email address with an SP for Outlook. This was bundled, instead. She calls it the "gift that keeps on giving"…
Hello and thanks for that new log, much easier on these old eyes. I can't see a lot left that should be a real problem. First this from the post instructions:

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

I may spot something in the Ewido log.
I will make some suggestions:
C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\GameDrvr.exe unless you use this, it is usually a problem. I would suggest you remove it using Add Remove programs.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\GameDrvr.exe" /startup "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0500.dll"
http://www.pchell.com/support/wildtangent.shtml

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://channels.aimtoday.com/search/aimtoolbar.jsp unless you access this toolbar, I would remove it with HJT. If you need a good search toolbar/popup blocker I suggest this one: http://toolbar.google.com/ If you do use it, install just the basic toolbar/blocker without all the frills which just wastes resources.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.nytimes.com/ I would remove this unless you use it.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing leftover from an infection and should be removed.

O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)
I don't see a program belonging to this, if you are running Weatherbug, make sure it is version 6.0 or above to avoid adware, if you are not, then remove this item.

O16 - DPF: {FE0BD779-44EE-4A4B-AA2E-743C63F2E5E6} (IWinAmpActiveX Class) - http://pdl.stream.aol.com/downloads/aol/unagi/ampx_en_dl.cab
http://pdl.stream.aol.com/ << using this address I can't validate this DPF. it says aol but we learned things can be deceiving from this infection. Unless you know and use this, I would remove it.

I suggest you download and run this utility to give yourself a good cleaning: http://www.ccleaner.com/ You will be surprised at how much junk it gets rid of. Use the default setting until you learn more about the utility, they have a good free forum if you have questions and they update it often.

Recap:
Download and run CCleaner

Post the log from the Euido scan

Let me know which of the above I may remove for you.

Let me know about any error messages that appear and give me an idea of which and how many sites you are having this issue with: http:///?%20sysmantec.com I am trying to run it down but this is all I have found so far:
http://www.blooberry.com/indexdot/html/top…urlencoding.htm
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_ref_urlencode.asp
http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/Dave/PERL/node201.html

Gave you a few links in case anything rings a bell.

Thanks…Phil
Phil, unfortunately I have run out of time because I had to take my daughter (and her PC) back to school. I apologize we weren't able to finish up but there are virtually no visible signs of issues at this moment. Regarding the %20 appending to the beginning of the URL in IE, for some reason it only seems to be happening to addresses in the Symantec domain. CNN, NYTimes.com, MSNBC, et. al. seem to be fine. Her home page is nytimes.com, which comes up fine. I could not have removed Aurora and MediaTickets without your help. I'm making a contribution to your site but couldn't possibly donate enough to cover the frustration you have saved. Thanks again to you and your fellow site contributors for everything your're doing. Bill D.
OK Bill, I am glad we got as much done as we did and sorry we did not get a quicker start. I want you to have this information I give everyone once they are clean. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Perhaps you can email her the information or save it for the next time she is home. It was good working with you and if we can do anything in the future to help, let us know. Phil :wavey:
