I have Windows XP with McAfee Internet Securty Suite and AVG. Both were working fine and then McAfee stopped working suddenly. I contaced McAfee support but they could not solve the problem, so I think it could be related to malware. AVG was still working at the time but now it has also stopped working. Also, I don't know if this is related but when I try to use windows search I get an error message that says "A file that is required to run search companion cannot be found" Here's my log. I also have Spybot S&D and Adaware.

Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped, and unfortunately, not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like. If you still need help with your problem, please reply to this message with a new HijackThis log. I will be notified automatically when you reply. Thanks daveai
Thanks.

Glad to hear the problem was solved.

You still might benefit to have a new HJT logfile reviewed. There were a couple of things that show up in that old log. Your call…I'm willing :)

Also, it is not a good idea to run with two anti-virus applications at the same time, since they may interfere with one another.

And, you may be interested in reviewing some general prevention steps to keep one's computer clean and secure. You have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Be sure you update your (single) anti-virus software at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – Continue to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – I strongly recommend that you consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
daveai
Ok, I am now using only McAfee with the McAfee firewall. I just did scans with Spybot and Adaware and then got another log…

Thanks

The log shows evidence of ShoAtHome and BargainBuddy adware.

1 – First, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that you find:

BargainBuddy
ShopAtHomeSelect Agent

2 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gah95on6] C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe

O18 - Filter: text/html - {950238FB-C706-4791-8674-4D429F85897E} - (no file)

O23 - Service: ZESOFT - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe (file missing)

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

3 – Then use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe <– this file

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

4 – Now, reboot normally and run at least two of these online virus scans (Or more if you wish.), reboot after each scan:

Bitdefender<<
RAV<<
eTrust<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful

Housecall<<
Panda ActiveScan<<
If the above find things to clean, please re-run them to be sure the infections are gone. If not, please tell me what could not be cleared out.

5 – Send a new HijackThis lof back to me in your reply

Thanks
daveai
No problems deleting those files, and the scans did not detect anything. Here's my new log…
