Hi
I have been having varying kinds of problems:
- the Windows XP Search Companion auto starting by itself, and then refusing to quit, freezing up my entire system.
- very much slower boot-up time for about a week now (no new programmes were added in that time)
- email from my husband's computer (on the same network) spamming my inbox
- my AcerTravelmate 430 shutting down by itself (could be due to overheating - but never happened before this spate of problems)
- Norton Anti-Virus disabling auto protect upon start-up

I am using a Netgear wireless card, and once (stupidly) forgot to use encryption, so had my line "hijacked". I have since reset the wireless router and gone with WEP. Really don't know where to begin trying to figure out what's causing these little problems.

I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot, Norton Anti-Virus, Avast - but all to no avail.

Thanks for any advice!

ahnoi,

So sorry for the delay, my first day back from vacation.

I have just looked over your log, what you discribe sounds like a virus but I don't see any signs of anything out of the ordinary on your system.

Did this problem occur after you installed Service Pack ? There have been instances where installing that service pack has caused some issues. I myself have installed it on about 3 dozen computers and have had no problems.

I would suggest running the latest versions of Spybot and Ad-Aware, they both came out with new versions in the past month. You can download them from the link in my signature. Here are the set up instructions for both programs.

* Install Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS.

Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL/ PERFORMANCE AND MAINTAINENCE/ ADD-REMOVE
PROGRAMS
scroll to that program and click on REMOVE.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to MODE and click on ADVANCED MODE.
* Then to SETTINGS / IGNORE PRODUCTS and put a checkmark in DSO EXPLOITS.
* Then to SETTINGS / FILE SETS and take the checkmark out ofUSAGE TRACKS.
* Then to TOOLS/ HOSTS FILE and then on the top click on ADD SPYBOT S & D HOSTS FILES.
* Then to TOOLS/ IE TWEAKS and put a checkmark in LOCK THE HOSTS FILES
* Then check for UPDATES.
* Then to Immunize. then up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on IMMUNIZE.
* Then go to the top to SPYBOT and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN.
* Then to FIX PROBLEMS and fix all it finds.

Then RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of AD-AWARE You can remove it via
the ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS IN THE CONTROL PANEL

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and CHECK FOR UPDATES
* Choose PERFORM FULL SYSTEM SCAN
* Take the checkmark out of SEARCH FOR NEGLIGIBLE RISK FILES
* Run the scan
* When it is done, RIGHT CLICK ON ONE OF THE ENTRIES/ SELECT ALL/ NEXT and let it remove all that if finds.

Now make sure that your Norton AV is up todate and run a full scan. List anything it found and can't fix.

Run a couple of online virus scanners, have them set to fix what they find or Auto-Clean.

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

You can also download and install the 30 day evaluation copy of Trojan Hunter here,

http://www.trojanhunter.com/

I know this is going to be some work for you, but lets cover all out bases. When your done, post a new HJT log. If still no improvement after all the scans, your problem could be hardware or software related. If so, I can direct you to some excellent Windows Tech support sites.
Thanks so much for your reply! Hope you had a good holiday.

Here's an update of where I am at now. While I was awaiting for a reply the past few days, I did a few other things:

1. Downloaded Avast antivirus, scanned, found nothing.
2. Did an online scan at Panda, found nothing.
3. Downloaded and installed SpyGuard, and SpyBlaster.
4. Downloaded and installed Mozilla's Firefox, and Thunderbird (for a better sense of security)
5. Reloaded my Norton AntiVirus, got the latest updates and definitions, scanned, found nothing.

BUT something I did find, quite by chance, was a Srchasst.dll file in my C:Windows, which I opened up using Notepad. It read very suspicious with lines like "copy files to user's computer" so I deleted it. Maybe I should have saved a copy of what it said so I could post it, but unfortunately, I didn't remember to. Well, after deleting that file, my Search Assistant continued to work well for a while. But every now and then, it still acts up. Especially when I am using Windows Explorer or the Windows "Start" button. Now, my "find" dialogue box will also pop up every now and again even when I am doing nothing. ARGGGGHH!!! :rant2: This is driving me up the wall.

But it's such a relief to be get some help on this. Thanks!!!! :)

ahnoi,

I still don't see a whole lot wrong malware or virus wise that would be causing you the problems that you are having.

I would like you to run HJT Scan Only and remove these lines. Put a checkmark in the following entries. Close all open windows and browsers and click on FIX CHECKED.

You will have to open Spybot Search and Destroy, go to MODE/ADVANCED MODE/ TOOLS/ RESIDENT and take the checkmark out of TEA TIMER. You can reenable this later on. It needs to be disabled for the fix to work.

If you use this site you can keep this, if not check it for removal
* R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.mamma.com/

This line is up to you, it shows that it is not needed and uses a lot of resouces.
* O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
