I posted a few days ago but no response. Now my computer is really acting up and I am at a total loss. Half the time my internet doesn't even work and now what ever is messing up my computer won't let me run certain programs.

Help!!!!

I have informed my daughter that AOL IM is not forbidden on this computer - nothing but problems.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi rjbacon, Welcome to the TomCoyote Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Now I want you to UNINSTALL the following programs through the ADD/REMOVE feature of your Control Panel:

Media Access

2. Now, using Windows Explorer, I need you to DELETE the following folder(s) and all their content:

C:\Program Files\Media Access

3. I need you to upgrade HJT to the latest version.

. Please DELETE your current copy.

. Download this self-extracting version from HERE

. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren
Thank you. Thank you. This has been driving me crazy.

I removed the program using the control panel but did not find it on the C drive using Windows Explorer.

Here is the latest log. Sorry if the other one was from an older version, the computer wouldn't let me run the newer one last night.

Regards,

Trevuren
Thanks - I am already noticing a difference in the operation of my system.

Here is the stuff you needed. While I was running the ewido scan the first time - it shut down while only 89% through the system. I ran it again and the results follow. I am still getting virus warnings from Norton - even after the latest scan and had a hard time running HJT (it kept getting closed and an error report generated - so I ended up downloading it again). The results of the Ewido scan are as follows:

That looks much better. Well done

I have to rain on your parade a bit though.

When you redownloaded HJT you put it in the wrong place again. Please put it back so that it looks like this in your log:

C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Send me a new log when HJT is located correctly and I will do my best to get you a fix this evening.

Regards,

Trevuren
Sorry - now there is a HJT is in a folder under Program Files. There may be older versions elsewhere - but everytime I try and search for them - windows explorer shuts down and kicks me off.

Here is the latest log.

HJT is fine right where it is. Thanks

Time to get rid of a bad running service:

1. First to get rid of a very malicious 023 item (Running Service)

To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service.

Service: Workstation Service Library (Microsoft Locator Service)

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

2. Now we need to work from the Command Prompt

Go Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>Command Prompt

. A black box will appear with a flashing cursor. At the cursor, type cd.. then cd.. again and repeat the procedure until the writing preceeding the cursor says C:\>

. Now carefully type the following: sc delete Microsoft Locator Service.

. Press ENTER.

.Close the Command Prompt box

3. Run HJT, Scan and place a checkmark beside the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3AA96A5E-EA18-0AB1-8024-65550AD07B45} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wstes.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: ISTbar - {FAA356E4-D317-42a6-AB41-A3021C6E7D52} - C:\Program Files\ISTbar\istbarcm.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Anti-Virus Update Scheduler V1.39.12R] C:\lanman.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://ny.contentmatch.net (HKLM)
O23 - Service: Workstation Service Library (Microsoft Locator Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\wkssvc.exe (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed, clicl Fix checkec and EXIT the program.

4. REBOOT into Safe MODE (Procedure previously described).

5. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following files/folders, if they exist:

C:\lanman.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wstes.dll
C:\Program Files\ISTbar<—Folder
C:\WINDOWS\wkssvc.exe

6. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

7. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren
You are amazing - glad someone understands all of this.

I did everything - somethings weren't where they should have been.

The only thing I didn't delete - was C:\Windows\wkssvc.exe-up - because it wasn't exactly what I was looking for with the extra (-up) at the end. Hope I am not making more work for you.

Here is the latest log.

I am not sure what you are referring to with the "up" business, but if that critter with/without any up is there, go get it.

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)
