Cleaning my computer

I recently installed a lot of software and want to clean my computer of any unnecessary items that may have also been installed (such as the ZeroBar add-on toolbar).

I've scanned my computer with Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, AVG and have all critical updates from Microsoft installed.

Could someone check my HJT log and let me know what items I can remove?

Thanks so much.

Hello twindex and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
You have Spybot S&D's Teatimer running which is good, but we need you to disable it for the remainder of the fix as it will interfere with the registry changes being made.
Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer". Reboot after unchecking the entry.

Be sure to re-enable this option again once the computer is clean.

Disable SpywareGuard:
  • Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
  • Then go to Menu, file, exit.
  • Then confirm the program is closed.
Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
If some of these entries come back after re-enabling Tea-Timer, we'll need to clear its memory.
Alan,

Thanks for your quick reply. I followed your directions and have posted the new log below.

It appears that some of the entries I had HJT fix did come back after rebooting and re-enabling Tea-Timer.

I'm not sure if this matters of not, but I have 2 user accounts on my computer, 1 limited account and the Administrator account. I carried out your directions using the admin account on my computer. Both of my posted logs were also created using the admin account. I primarily use the limited account though.

Do the registry changes apply to the limited account as well?

Just want to make sure I’m carrying out your instructions correctly.

Thanks again for your help.

I'll give you my normal all clean speech below as these are all orphaned entries and your computer is essentially clean. Please note the newest version of Ad-Aware (1.06) and Spybot S&D (1.4) if you have not already downloaded these.

I'll need you to turn off TeaTimer once again to remove those 016 lines. Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer". Reboot after unchecking the entry.

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat. Double click the file to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Fix these lines with HijackThis:

Turn tea timer back on after getting one clear log , then get one more to double check.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE
a² Free Trojan Remover

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
OK, after clearing Tea-Timer’s memory I think I’m getting a clean log now.

I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

Thanks Alan!
