A friend has asked me to help clear spyware off her computer. She is running XP home on a desktop with a dialup connection. I used faithful old Spybot but after reboot the popups keep happening. Turning of unknown apps in task manager just gets them started again under a different name. Spybot calls the 2 malwares it finds AbetterInternet (sic) and lSearchTech.PowerScan.

After cleaning for the umpteenth time with Spybot I rebooted and ran hijack this here is the log any help would be appreciated:

Hello UreKismet and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove New.Net or NewDotNet.

If there is no listing for it, use the uninstaller at newdotnet.com
Use procedure 4 to remove it. It requires that an internet connection be active while doing it.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?dow…050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and put a check mark beside:

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Open Hijackthis and click None of the above, just start the program. Click Config… < Misc Tools < Open Uninstall Manager. Click Save list… and save the file as uninstall_list.txt to a location of your choice.

You have Spyware Vanisher on your computer. This is on the Rogue/Suspect antispyware list as it uses false positives work as goad to purchase. You can read about it here. This is optional but I strongly recommend checking this entry than removing this program with Add/Remove Programs.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sais] c:\program files\180solutions\sais.exe

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
You have Microsoft's Find Fast running on your PC and while a legitimate program, it is a resource hog. It is usually the cause of your computer getting really slow or even freezing for several seconds while it is indexing. Find fast neither finds things any better or faster than other Windows searches. You will notice system improvement by disabling this one. Go into the FindFast icon in the Control Panel and choose the "Index \ Close and Stop" menu option.
O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

Search Relevancy
Uninstall 2search
TopFiveSearch.com Search Assistant
webHancer Survey Companion
Web Offer
Instant Access
<< Remove if you do not recognize this program.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following folder:

c:\program files\180solutions

Step 5
Please run scans with these two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 << Uninstall your older version first.
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE

Step 6
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
thanks Alan,

This isn't actually my computer it belongs to some friends who are away on holiday and asked me to take a look at it. Hence the delays in getting back to you. I'd like to think that I wouldn't allow my computer to get into this state. They of course blame their teenagers. For that reason I had no qualms installing adaware and ewido as a dose of prevention is certainly going to be better than cure if numerous people are using a computer.
I have completed the last instructions the only slightly problematic thing was Web Offer which is in the add/remove programs dialogue but when I try and remove it just gives the hourglass for a few seconds then returns to where I was b4 without removing the prog or offering to remove the entry from the remove programs list.
I updated spybot to 1.4 and ran it and it found nothing. I then installed and ran adaware SE which found over 100 entries about 70 of which were registry entries presumebly hungover from the malware removal, anyway I sorted through the list and let adaware deal to the data mining and malware. Rebooted and ran hijack this.
Everything appears to be on the up and up. Thanks again, here is the hijack this log:

That new log appears clean. :)

Open Hijackthis and click None of the above, just start the program. Click Config… < Misc Tools < Open Uninstall Manager. Scroll down to the Web Offer entry and left click it one time to highlight it. Now click Delete this Entry and OK any messages than exit the program.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
