Gurus;

Please help.

My friend's notebook has Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c infection.

Toshiba notebook, XP Home, SP1 Installed, AdAware, Spybot S&D installed and each run multiple times. CWShredder ready to run. HijackThis Run with log posted below.

Does Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c block Internet access? What a pain! I have to download and upload everything to my computer and transfer it …

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help!!!

John (for Emily)

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.
Thank you LDTate ! , Only one problem … Step 4 (Last Step before re-posting a new HiJack this log), would require me to access the internet from the infected computer. Since the computer "caught" Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c it has been unable to access the Internet; at least through Internet Explorer over a cable modem connection. From original post: >Does Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c block Internet access? What a pain! I have to >download and upload everything to my computer and transfer it … If this will be fixed in the steps preceeding "Step 4", then I will proceed. Or if, loading a different browser, FireFox, Netscape, Opera, etc. then I will – but I"d rather not have to … Can Panda ActiveScan be downloaded or only accessed ? Other suggestions ? Thanks again. John
Skip this one then: 4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan! Reboot Post a new HiJackThis log
LDTate, (or other Guru, if I was too slow in posting!) Seems to have got it, Desktop "fake" message is gone! Log below. Please do not hesitate to make any other suggested clean-ups … this computer seems to have lots of non-relevant "stuff" on it. Thanks again. Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Use Add/Remove Programs and remove:
Viewpoint Manager

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

If you don't know how to start in Safe Mode, clink HERE

We also need to "Show hidden files and folders." click HERE to learn how to:

Search for and delete these folders if listed:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Search for and delete these files if listed:
c:\wp.exe

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

LDTate, >Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment. Also, took a moment to clean-up all other unknown programs. Booted several times both in Safe Mode and Normal mode, and logged-in as each User. Things appear to be running well. I haven't tried connecting to the Internet, but will after I see a last e-mail about the "Latest Log" I posted just before this update. Again, thank you for all your help. Hopefully we (actually YOU) caught it all … Your help is much appreciated. I'll mention to my friend about donating – but also, I think I'll scan my computer to see if it has anything – and then donate myself. Is PayPal accepted? John

and then donate myself. Is PayPal accepted?

Yes, you can click the link in my signature to donate to TC.

Good Job

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Great job

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help :wavey:
