Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up).

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN Messenger] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe" /background

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Open C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe <–Delete File

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Please double check the last log I sent in. There is NO item: O4 - HKLM\…\Run: [MSN Messenger] etc. Do you mean a similar item: O4 - HKCU…Run: [MSMSGS] … etc ? Please double check and clarify which boxes I should check. I see the F2 item you indicated, but in the mean time, I'm holding off on deleting anything. Thanks.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
Sorry that one is OK.

Make sure you do this in Safe Mode.

OK, I did what you said, and here's the latest log.

It may not be in the log, but I see the file msmsgs.exe in my Windows/System 32 directory. In an earlier post, you had told me to delete this file. Should I delete it or leave it alone?

Do you still want me to delete this file? > C:\windows\system32\msmsgs.exe ?

I don't see it in you log?

OK, I deleted msmsgs.exe in the Window/system32 directory.
Everything seems pretty good on my computer now. Do you think I should go ahead and download Windows Service pack 2?

Good Job

Do the below before trying SP2.

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
I had already done what you said about System Restore and Restore Defaults ( a couple of posts ago). My system is running beautifully - no problems with browser hijacking. Three questions:
1) Am I safer using an alternate browser like Mozilla firefox (to prevent future problems)?
2) Should I go ahead with downloading Service pack 2?
3) I'd likr to make a contribution to thank you for your help. Can I send a personal check to the texas address?

1. Firefox is less likely to get hacked. It's your choice.

2. Read the documentation first. Some programs don't get along with SP2

3. Yes, that's Tom's address.

Great job

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help

Peace be with you :wavey:
