Hello kennyp ,welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
THANKS for helping. Here's what I did so far:
I ran Spybot and deleted the things it found, a couple of items about Coolweb.
I ran CWShredder and it found nothing (probably because SPybot had already found the CW stuff).
I ran Adaware and deleted the stuff it found.
I ran a new HijackThis and am pasting the log below.
Symptoms now: My start page on IE is: "about:blank". From IE I can't get to any web site. In my registry, I see startsearches.net for a lot of the Search page stuff. If I get into the Registry and try to change the Start page or Search pages, something changes them back right away. So my IE is unusable now; I'm using Mozillla Firefox as a browser now, otherwise I couldn't do anything on the web. I would like to get this cleaned up and get back to using IE.
Here's the latest HijackThis log after the above:

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Se

arch & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

167406

Click the link and get yourself a free Anti-Virus program. Download, update and scan:

http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup…ree_322a531.exe

After that:

You need to update both Windows XP and Internet Explorere as they are both well behind in updates. They are both missing Service Pack 1 which is leaving you open to all kinds of problems.

I DO NOT suggest you go to Service Pack 2, at this time.

Service Pack 1 for XP

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…p1/default.mspx

Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo…p1/default.mspx

Install then Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Here's what I have done since my last post:
1) following your suggestions, I downloaded the AVG anti-virus software from GriSoft. I ran it and it found 3 viruses. Actually two of them were Trojan horses. I vaulted everything it found.
2) I downloaded Windows XP Service Pack 1 and installed it (took over 3 hrs!).
3) I also downloaded and installed the Internet Explorer Service pack 1 that you suggested.
4) I've re-run Spybot S&D and Spysweeper (from ATT Worldnet). I deleted whatever they found.
5) I tried to run Adaware again. After 10 minutes, it found a virus (Trojan horse 6 BC) and freezes. I had to abort it because it was stuck.

Present symptoms:
1) my home page is still "about:blank". When I get on the internet with IE, the "Startsearches.net" page comes up. As before, I can't change these things in the Reigstry by running REGEDIT, because something is immediately changing them back to "about:blank" and the Startsearches.net.
2) various warnings pop up on my screen from time to time warning be about having Spyware on my computer.
3) I have a second browser on my computer: Mozilla Firefox. Now when I try to use that to bring up any web site, after about 20 seconds I get an error message that says the operation timed out, and the web site I wanted doesn't come up.

The latest HijackThis log (after all of the above) is pasted below:

Click the link and get yourself a free Anti-Virus program. Download, update and scan:

http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup…ree_322a531.exe

After that:

You need to update both Windows XP and Internet Explorere as they are both well behind in updates.  They are both missing Service Pack 1 which is leaving you open to all kinds of problems.

I DO NOT suggest you go to Service Pack 2, at this time.

Service Pack 1 for XP

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…p1/default.mspx

Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo…p1/default.mspx

Install then Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

167594

I suggest you do this:

Please disable SpySweeper: Until clean

Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck 'automaticly restore default without notifiction".

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
WOW! Things are MUCH BETTER! I'm getting a regular home page again: IE comes up with the MSN.com that must have come from the "Reset Web Headings" under the Internet Options> Program tab.
I did all the stuff you said: I ran HijackThis, checked all the boxes you said and clicked "Fix Checked." I deleted all the things you told me to, including going into Safe Mode to delete "popuper.exe" and a few others. In addition, I went into REGEDIT and changed a few other entries myself where I still saw "startsearches.net." I used values that I saw on another Windows XP Home computer that I have at home.
Here's a couple of questions:
1) When I clicked "Fix checked" in HijackThis, a window popped up from the AVG saying it found a virus: Trojan Horse Collected 6.BC. I moved it the vault.
2) Also, should I turn Spysweeper back on and let it run at boot and turn the Shields back on?
3) Should I use the Window XP Firewall? I also have a firewall that I have with System Suite 4.0 that's called Net Defense. I can run that also or instead of the Windows Firewall.
But in general, things are MUCH, MUCH better. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
Here's the latest HijackThis log: all traces of "about:blank" and "startsearches.net" appear to be gone!!!

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Here's what I've just done. I ran HijackThis again and checked and fixed the items you said.
I didn't delete any "msmsgs.exe" files, because I found 4 of them, and I wasn't sure which one(s) to delete. PLEASE ADVISE which to delete. The four "msmsgs.exe" were in these directories:
1) Program files\Messenger
2) windows\system32
3) windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
4) there was also one called msmsgs.exe-2B6052DE.pf in the Windows/Prefetch directory.
By the way, last time I deleted everything in the Windows/Prefetch directory and several dozen items have re-appeared in that directory. Is that OK?
I am now able to change my Registry without something in the background changing entries back to "about:blank" and "startsearches.net". That's a relief. What was the critical file that you had me delete last time that was changing the Registry "behind the scenes". Thanks again for your outstanding help!

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Search for and delte this file
msmsgs.exe

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

By the way, last time I deleted everything in the Windows/Prefetch directory and several dozen items have re-appeared in that directory. Is that OK?

Yes, that is OK.

I am now able to change my Registry without something in the background changing entries back to "about:blank" and "startsearches.net". That's a relief. What was the critical file that you had me delete last time that was changing the Registry "behind the scenes". Thanks again for your outstanding help

!
critical file: F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

My IE browser is working really well now. I have my home page back and I'm not getting anymore error messages about Spyware.
Two postings ago, you told me to delete "msmsgs.exe."
I haven't done yet what you said about System Restore and Resore Defaults. I will after you tell me what I shoud do about the four msmsgs.exe files I mentioned above.
Here's another question. Should i go out and buy Norton Ant-virus or is that AVG Anti-virus program good enough?
Thanks,
KennyP

back at post #6, did you do this?
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.
Don't worry about the other msmsgs.exe files.

Here's another question. Should i go out and buy Norton Ant-virus or is that AVG Anti-virus program good enough?

I use Grisoft AVG myself. It works great for me.
Yes, I did delete everything in Windows/Prefetch a couple of posts ago. New items appeared later, but you said that was OK. You don't want me to delete the items in Window/Prefetch again, do you?
So do you want me to leave the "msmsgs.exe" files there that are still on my computer? As I said in my previous post, there were 3 or 4 of them in different directories.
Everything seems to be working fine right now. thanks much!!!

Things are looking very good on my computer; Internet access is fine.
I did what you said about "System Restore" and "Restore Defaults". I ran what I hope would be one last log (below). I noticed two items returned that you asked me to check before:
F2 REG system.ini …… msmsgs.exe
O4 …. TkBellExe ….

I ran Adaware, Spybot, and Spysweeper again. Each found a couple of minor things that I deleted.
Should I restore Spysweeper back to running at startup and turn the shields back on?
Should I do anything about the HijackThis log below?
I'm hoping to sign out on this whole thing if you think things look OK. Let me know if you think I'm done.

Your help has been tremendous and invaluable !!! THANK YOU again !
