Hi all,

So I've been having issues with pop-ups and WMP as I'm sure the title of the post indicated. I keep running ad-aware and search&destroy, but they aren't fixing it. Many of the pop-ups are titles Ceres, whatever that means. As for the WMP every time I try to open it some browser optimizer "Alwaysupdatednews" pops up and says that I've started downloading it. When I refuse to finish downloading, the window closes but WMP won't start. I'm including the Hijack This log. Thanks in advance for your help,

-Nick

One other quick question, does anybody know what the black dot on the envelope symbol means? I can't find it.
Hello AIMisdumbdammit, Welcome to the forum.

One other quick question, does anybody know what the black dot on the envelope symbol means? I can't find it

That just means you've replied to that Topic.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet. Please go to
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5co…t.aspx?ln=en-us]Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Ive done everything but the Ad-Aware, because it keeps freezing up mid way through the search when it gets to viewpoint toolbar. Version 6.0 didn't use to do this, is it possible I got a bad version of ad-aware se? Anyway, heres the logfile as it stands

I ran the last of the three online scans and I think it worked.

Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

To configure Windows to show all files

Do the following:

On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Do the following:

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Search for and delete these folders if listed:
C:\Program Files\SVA Player
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager
C:\Program Files\WildTangent
C:\Program Files\Media Access

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY Listed Profile USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Hello there. Thank you for the response. I've managed to trudge past most of the steps you listed on your last suggestion: I checked items while in HijackThis, removed faulty files in the Add/Remove Programs prompt, and I've wiped my computer clean of malware using AdAware. However, I can't seem to start my computer in Safe Mode. I press F8 at the correct moment, and then I am unable to select Safe Mode once inside the selection prompt. I've tried doing this several times, but each time I am unable to type anything or scroll anywhere on the page. Could this be yet another effect of a virus which does not want me to clean my computer? How can I go about finishing this? Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you for all of your assistance so far! -A very frustrated and disappointed [in technology] Nick
Hello,

I've managed to work inside Safe Mode (after some clever strategizing on my part), and the following is my most recent HijackThis Log. Is there any more work to be done?

Good Job

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

1.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

2.Do one of the following:
In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, check Hide file extensions for known file types.

3.Do one of the following:
In Windows Me/2000/XP, check Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, unclick Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Great job

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help :wavey:
