I removed some active-x programs from C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files and I'm trying to delete 016 - DPF entries in Hijackthis, but they keep coming back after re-booting. I've also tried deleting the registry keys with regedit and the same thing happens. Is there anyway to get rid of them permanently? Here's my latest log:

Hello stanman and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You have Spybot S&D's Teatimer running which is good, but we need you to disable it for the remainder of the fix as it will interfere with the registry changes being made.
Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer". Reboot after unchecking the entry.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Be sure to re-enable these options again once the computer is clean.

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check the following:

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. If these entries come back we'll need to clean out the 'memory' for TeaTimer so it will not try to undo the fixes.
Looks like they're finally gone. I did as use suggested, then went into spybot and deleted the same entries in the active-x section and started everything back up again. Let me ask you something. Do you think that it's overkill to have teatimer, spyware blaster and MS Antispyware running at the same time? I've also tried spyware guard and winpatrol, but it seemed like teatimer was the best of the bunch.

Thank you very much for your help!

Hello stanman and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Let me ask you something. Do you think that it's overkill to have teatimer, spyware blaster and MS Antispyware running at the same time? I've also tried spyware guard and winpatrol, but it seemed like teatimer was the best of the bunch.

Since I installed Microsoft Antispyware on my computer, I've stopped using TeaTimer. In my opinion it does a more thorough job of protecting the registry and other parts of the computer such as malicious scripts. It is more of a user preference issue so I would say to use the one that you prefer better. As for Spyware Blaster, it protects the computer from bad ActiveX entries by setting a kill bit to prevent the items from ever being installed without using any system resources.
However, I do check for updates for Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE, and a² at least once a week and run scans with them when a new set of definitions has been released.

You can fix this line with HijackThis also (don't forget to turn off the two programs again before fixing it):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {206E52E0-D52E-11D4-AD54-0000E86C26F6} - (no file)

Your log should be clean after this.

I'm trying to get rid of O2 - BHO: (no name) - {206E52E0-D52E-11D4-AD54-0000E86C26F6} - (no file) by the same method, but it keeps coming back when I start teatimer. When I started teatimer with MS antispyware running, a box came up from MS antispyware asking to either block or allow the BHO (no other option). I tried block, thinking that I could go into view blocked events and then delete it from there, but it doesn't show up as a blocked event. I've tried to delete from spybot and reboot, but when I startup teatimer it comes back. I've tried several different combinations with no luck. Any ideas?
I'll need you to turn off TeaTimer once again to remove that 02 line. Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer". Reboot after unchecking the entry.

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat. Double click the file to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Fix this line with HijackThis:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {206E52E0-D52E-11D4-AD54-0000E86C26F6} - (no file)

Turn tea timer back on after getting one clear log , then get one more to double check.

Let me know how it works.
The BHO that wouldn't die is finally gone. :) Thanks very much for all your help. I'll hang on to that batch file in case I need to use it again. So I can avoid these problems in the future, what would be the best way to delete downloaded active-x and BHO's. I'm guessing the first thing is to turn off tea-timer and reboot, but then what would be the proper procedure? I also think that I'll follow your example, turn off tea-timer and just use MS AntiSpyware for real-time protection, which should eliminate some of these problems.
Your welcome. :) This is the proper procedure for removing most entries in HijackThis. Shut off all anti-spyware protection, reboot the computer, fix the entries with HJT, and finally delete any applicable files. Good luck in your future Internet surfing.
