I have been trying to get rid of Search42.com popups for a few weeks, Spybot SD doesn't seem to, and nethier does Adaware, Its causing unwanted popups, net congestion, and random heavy net usage and disconnects.

I use Windows SP2,IE SP2,Spybot,Adaware,AVG,WinPatrol and common sense for spyware defense...don't kno how or where I got this Search42 :(

Heres my 1991HJT log. I'm a Cox Cable user if that matters.

Please help me kill this.

Hello deanimator, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. You have a nasty new trojan called trojan.vundo.b. Symantec has updated it's removal tool to remove this trojan and it works often but the instructions MUST be followed 100% for you to have success. HijackThis can not fix this trojan. Here is what it looks like so you can tell if the tool removed it:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\oleacc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: oleacc - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\oleacc.dll

Here is the Symantec tool:
http://securityrespo...moval.tool.html

You may want to try it a couple of times.
____________________________________________________________________

This is the manual fix if you need it:

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from HERE

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from HERE

Step 2:

Download the file and save it to your desktop:

FixVundo Registry File

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of oleacc.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the oleacc.dll's under winlogon click OK.

If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of oleacc.dll then click the kill button.

If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\oleacc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: oleacc - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\oleacc.dll

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.

Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box

C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\oleacc.dll

Click the red circle with the white x and say yes to the delete prompt but no to reboot now
then repeat with any of the reverse named .bak or .ini files

after you have input the last file name then reboot

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

Thanks...pskelley

The tool seems to have cleared it up but I checked everything in process explorer to be sure, seemed clear on that front.

I tried using that systematic tool when the first version was out and it didnt work thats why I came here, but the second version( I didnt even know it got updated till you told me) worked fine.

Thanks for the help here is my new Hijackthislog

Hi deanimator, Good job  Tool has been around a while but the trojan keeps morphing as the malware writers make it harder to remove. The Symantec change for this new version has only been out a few days.

I need to point out that you have questionable software on the computer, see what Trend Micro has to say about the adware supported "FlashGet"
http://www.trendmicr...v..._FLASHGET.A I will give you instructions for removing this grayware and doing a little cleanup to see if we can make your computer run better. You may ignore this optional advice if you wish:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

2) I need to be sure HJT is on a drive so it can store logs and backups for safety: S:\My docs\Highjackthis\HijackThis1991.exe, if this is a floppy or CD please move it to a drive before proceeding.

3) You have programs (WinPatrol and SpywareGuard) that will block the changes, you will need to turn those programs off until you are finished with HJT.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O3 - Toolbar: FlashGet Bar - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\fgiebar.dll
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download All by FlashGet - C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_all.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download using FlashGet - C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_link.htm
O9 - Extra button: FlashGet - {D6E814A0-E0C5-11d4-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\flashget.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: &FlashGet - {D6E814A0-E0C5-11d4-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\flashget.exe
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://www.popcap.co...aploader_v6.cab
ADW_POP.A >> http://www.trendmicr...SNAME=ADW_POP.A

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

(since you just removed nasty trojans, I suggest you run this scan, your call)
Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsec...com/trojanscan/

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks...pskelley

Hi deanimator, I am glad you were able to remove the nasty trojan you were infected with. I have not heard from you since I posted the following cleaning with HJT. I will assume you are finished with our services and close this thread in 24 hours. I do want to leave you with this information, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
