Hello, I am a novice but I have read some of the threads posted here and it looks like someone here can help me get rid of this annoying hijacker. This thing is a real doozie because it redirects all hyperlinks to anti-virus and anti-spyware progams from legitimate websites. I have downloaded HijackThis and run a scan. I can see some of the problems, but I'm not sure I can find them all. Can someone point me in the right direction? Below is the HJT log file from my most recent scan:

Please do this first:
  • Download the latest version of Ad-Aware:
    http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

After installing AAW, and before running the program.
Please be sure to update the reference file following the instructions here:
    http://www.lavahelp.net/howto/updref/

    Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

    Click the "Scanning" button.
Under Drives, Folders and Files, select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
    Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Log-file detail level", select all options.
    Click the "Tweaks" button.

Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:
    "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT to allow it to finish.
  • If you haven't done so Please Scan with Spybot Search and Destroy:

    1. Download and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings

    2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.

    3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

    4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ and download and install the Updates.

    5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’

    6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ (RED) entries ‘BLACK’ entries and ‘GREEN’ (GREEN) entries in the window

    7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED (RED) entries ONLY.

    8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

    9. REBOOT to complete the scan.
  • Reboot, make a new HijackThis log and post it here.
Hans, thanks for the reply. I have Spybot and Ad-Aware 6.0 and frequently run scans. I did however, follow your instructions and I downloaded the updated reference files and made the changes to the profiles you suggested. I ran both again. I don't think they fixed my problem. I also ran CWShredder, which removed About:Blank from my machine. However, I did this last week, so somehow it keeps reinstalling on my machine at startup I guess. Anyway, I have posted a new HijackThis! log below. I appreciate your assistance.

Phillip

Oh, and one other thing: when I ran the Spybot scan, it stopped each time and gave me the following error message (curiously in German and English): Error during checK! Xuron55(Datei C:\WINDOWS\win.ini kann nicht geoffnet werden. THe process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process). I assume this is a reference to the ipassist.biz hijacker, but it was not mentioned by name. Thanks again, Phillip
Hi,

The latest version of Ad Aware is Ad Aware SE, not 6. You should get the latest version.

Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and run it from there in the future ;)

1. Run HijackThis (“Do a system scan only”). Put a checkmark near these lines:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://81.222.131.49/index.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm

2. Close all other windows and browsers, and hit Fix Checked.

3. Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 frequently during bootup.
Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

4. Delete, in safe mode:
Folders
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools
C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Files
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{2222FB82-6BDF-4DEF-B41E-B129910D4870}\SVCHOST.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{2222FB82-6BDF-4DEF-B41E-B129910D4870}\SECURITY.EXE
C:\wp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe << only svchost.exe located in C:\Windows, so NOT the svchost.exe file in C:\Windows\System32!

5. Go to Start - Run… and type:
cleanmgr
Hit OK.
Make sure Temporary Files and RecycleBin is checked and hit OK.

6. Reboot into normal mode, make a new HijackThis log, and post it here :)
Hans, I hate it that I am so low tech, but I couldn't even complete the steps you outlined. I did run a system scan on HJT as you instructed but when I rebooted to safe mode, I couldn't connect to the internet. I have a wireless card in my PC downstairs which connects to the wireless router upstairs. Every time I restart or shut down, I have to reestablish the wireless connection. I do this by double-clicking on the D-link icon in the lower right task bar and hitting "refresh". However, when I reboot into safe mode, I can't find that icon and therefore cannot figure out how to reestablish the wireless connection. I did lauch IE (without a connection) and tried to find "Folder Options" in the Tools, menu, but it wasn't there. I'm sorry for being a techno weakling, but I'm not sure how to proceed. Any advice? Thanks. Phillip
Hi Philip,

Glad you're explaining your problem so well :)

You have to launch Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer.

You can launch Explorer by doing the following:
Go to Start - Run… and type:
explorer.exe
Hit OK.
Now Windows Explorer will open.

You don't need to have internet-connection during the fix. It would even be better to have NO internet-connection during the fix.

I hope I explained it good enough. If not, just point out the part you don't entirely understand and I'll do my best to explain it more/better :)
Hans, man am I a knucklehead! OK, I did as you instructed, but I could not find most of the files and folders you mentioned. I deleted the Viewpoint folder, but there was no WinTools folder or updater folder within the Common Files folder (or anywhere else I could find). Also, I could not find any folder named "Services" within the System32 folder or wp.exe or WINDOWS\svchost.exe. I followed the other instructions. My new HJT log is posted below. Thanks again.

Phillip

A job well done :)

Your log looks good now!

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers real-time protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
I also suggest that you delete your Temp folders regularly. Use CleanUp! to do this automatically for you!
Hans, thank you very much for your help. I already have Spybot and Spywareblaster and will get the others you suggested (and make sure I always keep what I have updated). I'm also planning on downloading a firewall and new anti-virus program. Again, thanks for your help and patience. You guys are saints! Regards, Phillip
