Aurora Pop-ups

I don't typically have any pop-up problems on my computer, but over the last few days, a pop-up window with "Aurora" in the title bar keeps bugging me. I've run Spybot S&D, which I typically check for updates and run about once a week, and I've come up clean. The only other program I use is "Popup Stopper Free Edition", although this obviously won't help uninstall any spyware. I've searched a few online forums, and was directed here. Beyond this, I've also seen a few recommendations to go to www.mypctuneup.com/aurora, but it seems the recommendation is to run the Hijack This (a program which I am unfamiliar with), and get support feedback on the filelog first. HJT log is posted below, any help would be VERY appreciated:

Hello Hopper39 and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Download CWShredder.exe to your desktop from one of these places:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3019
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshr…r_download.html
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

Double click on CWShredder.exe to clean up clicking FIX to have it remove all it finds. Reboot when completed.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here : http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do not run it yet.

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

@ECHO OFF
cd %windir%
Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
sc config SvcProc start= disabled
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe
del svcproc.exe
cd %windir%\system32
attrib -s -r -h DrPMon.dll
del DrPMon.dll
exit

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly — this is normal.

Please run a full scan with Ewido suite, and remove anything found.

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check the following:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Restart your computer normally and post a new HijackThis log and the log from the Ewido scan as a reply to this thread.
Thanks so much!

As a side note, while we're cleaning house, there's a bunch of stuff in here that I think can be further removed, although it's not malware. I just want to make sure that I'm not going to harm my computer doing so. I'm specifically interested in:

FIRST:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.att.net
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.comcast.net/

Neither of these are my homepage…att.net was the default browser when I got the computer, comcast.net was the default page when I installed them as my ISP until I changed it back to cnn.com. What are these functions?

SECOND:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] D:\Jeff's Programs\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background

I don't need Real, MusicMatch, QuickTime, iTunes or MSN Messenger to run at startup…is that what these are for? Or are they automatic update features when new software for the program comes out?

THIRD:
O9 - Extra button: ComcastHSI - {669B269B-0D4E-41FB-A3D8-FD67CA94F646} - http://www.comcast.net/ (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: Support - {8828075D-D097-4055-AA02-2DBFA9D85E8A} - http://www.comcastsupport.com/ (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE

Are these just extra buttons on the top of my IE page? I don't need these if they are just re-directs, especially since I don't use MSN Messenger.

FOURTH:
O16 - DPF: Yahoo! Bingo - http://download.games.yahoo.com/games/clients/y/xt0_x.cab
O16 - DPF: Yahoo! Checkers - http://download.games.yahoo.com/games/clients/y/kt3_x.cab
O16 - DPF: Yahoo! Chess - http://download.games.yahoo.com/games/clients/y/ct2_x.cab
O16 - DPF: {B9191F79-5613-4C76-AA2A-398534BB8999} - http://us.dl1.yimg.com/download.yahoo.com/…utocomplete.cab

What's this stuff? I don't play any of these games on Yahoo! regularly, although I probably have at once point or another.

FIFTH:
O23 - Service: Sony SPTI Service (SPTISRV) - Sony Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\AVLib\SPTISRV.exe

Just don't know what this is. My laptop is Sony, and it came pre-loaded with a bunch of their carp**, but I never use any of it.

************

I appreciate any feedback so I can get my computer running as cleanly as possible. Rest assured I'll be putting my money where my is and make a donation to this site. Your help has been invaluable so far; thanks Alan!

Cheers,
Jeff
Your computer is clean. :)

I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

I'll add the following items only as optional fixes because you requested information about them. Note that none of these are bad items but are unnecessary to have.

Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.att.net
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.comcast.net/

Look inside the program for an option to disable these 04's from startup first than check with Hijackthis.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe

This one has been known to reinstate itself as a startup program even after fixing. :(
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] D:\Jeff's Programs\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

Go to MS Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background

This is an application scheduler installed with RealOne Player. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

This installs the QuickTime System Tray icon. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in QuickTime itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Open Quick Time Player (2)Edit > Preferences > Quick Time Preferences (3)uncheck Quick Time System Tray icon on the Browser Plug-in Pane
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

These are extra buttons on the main IE button toolbar, or extra items in the IE 'Tools' menu.

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE

These are ActiveX entries that will reload if needed again.

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are two other very good and free malware scanners to compliment Spybot S&D:

AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
