Please help me clean up my PC

Thanks Alan, I have taken your advice, reset the system restore (no warning dialogue appeared?) and I have started downloading the various protection programmes. I switched to Firefox soon after starting this string and agree that it is far less troublesome than IE. I am undecided as to whether to renew my Norton Anti Virus or download a free AV programme, but will do one or the other soon. Thanks for your prompt replies, your patience and expert advice. This site and the people who make it work epitomise what the internet can and should be. All the best
