I have run microsoft spyware, spydoctor, aol spyware, all will come up clean also I have run McAfee virus scan and removed everything it finds, yet I still get bombarded with interuptions, also about every minute my firewall gives me notice of ?ttrib.exe trying to gain access. Any help will be appreciated. Here is my Hijackthis log.

Have you tried to use a program such as l2mfix on your computer? This line is indicative of it but the infection is still present.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [second] F:\WINDOWS\system32\second.bat


Step 1
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.


Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: RunServicesOnce - F:\WINDOWS\system32\irr4l59q1.dll

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = F:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.


Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.


Step 4
Please delete the following file:

F:\WINDOWS\system32\?ttrib.exe << The ? in this file could be any letter or symbol. (The file should have an icon that resembles a building block).

If you have any problem deleting this file, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.


Step 5
Reboot normally. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!


Note : Once the pc has restarted if a log does not appear or the icons didn't dissappear, run the "second.bat" located inside the L2mfix folder.


After the fix portion is done. Please run the option to restore the winlogon defaults (menu option 4). After you do that post an option 1 log again.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ewrt] F:\Documents and Settings\Don Frank\Application Data\sspe.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.


Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.


Step 3
Please delete the following file:

F:\Documents and Settings\Don Frank\Application Data\sspe.exe

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.


Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

I cannot find the line in my hijackthis scan to fix. I have included a copy of the log. Do I still need to do step 3 and delete the file? let me know.

I cannot find the line in my hijackthis scan to fix. I have included a copy of the log. Do I still need to do step 3 and delete the file?

:scratch: Mysterious. Must be all our hard work scared it away. :rofl:
If you can find the file go ahead and remove it.

I never have been able to find the file to delete. My family says they havn't had any more problems with computer. usualy when I am on this site I keep getting other sites popping up, but not anymore. Thanks for your help, any suggestions to keep this from happening again? Currently I am only running Microsopft Anti spyware and McAfee virus scan, which does seem to catch quite a bit. Again thanks for your help.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'


Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
