Thanks for your help.

Hello Mark, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. We do have some issues, if you wish my help please follow these directions:
1) I see Trend Micro and Symantec, but it looks like they are doing different functions, I just want to be sure nothing is conflicting there. If it is it would make you more vulnerable.

2) Here are the items, I am going to bet you do not know what omra.exe is either. If you do, pass it in the fix and make me aware. The others are what we call random named trojans and since they are not in running process, they are probably hiding in Prefetch and running from there.
C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Application Data\omra.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\bitsprx2.exe
xpsppp.exe

3) Open Task Manager then the Processes Tab, locate and end process on omra.exe

4) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [299db309d2cd] C:\WINDOWS\System32\bitsprx2.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [eov9RTY7U] xpsppp.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Crlc] C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Application Data\omra.exe
(if you did not set the next restriction you may check and remove it)
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} -

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

xpsppp.exe >>> file (you wil need to search for this one, if it is in Prefetch, we will empty it anyway)

C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Application Data\omra.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\bitsprx2.exe >>> file (this may not be there, it may be in Prefetch. If it's there, do delete it.

C:\Windows\Prefetch navigate to that folder and delete everything in it. NOT THE FOLDER, just the contents. You may not be able to get them all, but do make sure the bad ones are not being left.
Make sure you empty all Temp and Temp Internet folders also. This information may help:

http://www.safecomputing.umn.edu/guides/tempdirectories.html
http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm

We removed some nasty trojans, let's check to make sure none are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks for all your initial help.
I believe things are a bit better, but we still seem to have a long way to go…

Trend Micro was doing the virus scan only, I had Norton disabled for virus protection, but would use it for the other utilities. I've had it running w/o incident for months.

Had no idea what OMRA.exe was, but it appears to be gone now.

All online scans tell me I'm "clean"
AD-AWARE SE
TREND MICRO HOUSE CALL
CC Cleaner (wow, that was cool)
Windowsecurity/trojanscan

Yet, the CPU is still cranking at 100% on a 'normal boot'

Here's the latest log I generated from a standard boot:

Hello Mark, I must apologize as the notification system failed us and I was not notified when you posted on Apr 25 2005, 06:53 PM. If you would, look at the top for Track this topic and click it to be sure you are subscribed, if not please do so. I came across this in a routine check of my open posts. I will look at this log now: Scan saved at 5:19:49 PM, on 4/25/2005.

OK, this is a clean log and you must look elsewhere for what is creating your issues. There is one item: R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = still in the log that was posted for fixing with HJT and I do not know if you missed it but it is just clutter. Have you tried looking in your Task Manager to see if you can discern where the high CPU usage is coming from?
http://kadaitcha.cx/high_cpu.html
Lot's more information at google by searching (High CPU usage)

Could this have happened at or about the time you downloaded SP2?
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

While I can't guarantee that there could not be something hiding on the computer it is unlikely the trojan scan would not have located it. Here is a deep free scan if you want to try another:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

As you proceed, since your log is clean, Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html

I will keep this thread open for two weeks in the event you wish to post another log for a look, or results of the scan.

Thanks PSKelly! Don't worry about it. I ended up doing the big wipeout and starting back from ground zero. The entire contents of "My Documents" became "access denied" and contents showed up at 0 bytes…I think the Panda Scan found several nasties but couldn't / wouldn't touch any of them. I think they were in the system files and couldn't be messed with. The reason I got hosed like this was due to simply forgetting to put all my security back up one night after trying to troubleshoot a connectivity issue (which turned out to be simply a Comcast issue). So, chalk it up to user error. Good news is that I have found this forum, and some great links and true tekkies to consult if/when the need arises… Thanks again. :wavey:
