Ok. To start I've been having tons of problems with my computer. Mainly it was running extremely slow. Also certain web pages wouldn't load after I entered in my user name and password such as hotmail. I figured this was some type of spyware and started looking around. I first detected it with norton antivirus. It showed me two infected files which were req.dat and vgaimg.dll. I finally got rid of req.dat using killbox but I'm still getting nowhere with vgaimg.dll. I try to use killbox and it tells me pendingfilenameoperations registry data has been removed by external process, and the file continues to haunt me. I've tried in safe mode and still no luck. Here's my log if anyone could find anything else. I NEED HELP. Thanks.

Hello lindros163 and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from here.
Unzip Process Explorer to the desktop.

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from here.
Unzip KillBox to the desktop.

Please copy the text from within the code box below and paste it into a blank notepad window.
Save it as vundo.reg and in the save as type box choose 'all files'.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B2DADCFF-1A6D-5DEE-6970-18B32AEC0DEF}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]

Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').

Double click on procexp.exe.

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of vgaimg.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the vgaimg.dll's under winlogon click ok.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of vgaimg.dll then click the kill button. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click ok again.

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860} - C:\WINDOWS\vgaimg.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: vgaimg - C:\WINDOWS\vgaimg.dll

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Double click vundo.reg and allow it to merge with the registry.

Double click on Killbox.exe.
In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:

C:\WINDOWS\vgaimg.dll

Check the option for "Delete on Reboot". Click the button with the red circle with a white X in it. Click 'yes'. When asked to reboot choose 'yes'.
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.
Good deal. Looks like that worked in getting rid of that vgaimg.dll. Here's my newest log

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pssh35S] offphost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Notn] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wtta.exe

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wtta.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

offphost.exe

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Followed steps. Here's what I got. For step 4 when trying to find
"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wtta.exe" I find nothing. It's not in that location. Also when I did a search for offphost.exe I also found nothing. The one problem I had where I couldn't get on to websites that required a password seems to be gone. I still once in awhile get a problem where if I click back on my internet browser it does nothing. I have to do it twice for it to work. I'm not sure if the latest clean you gave me fixed that but just wanted to let you know about that problem. Here's the latest log.
Thanks so much for the help.

Just some basic clean-up remaining. :)

Step 1
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 3
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know how the computer is behaving.

Your new log is clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are three very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE
A2 Squared

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Thank you very much for all your help. One more quick question. With all those programs you suggested won't they be putting a huge drain on my computers memory?
Spyware Blaster - installs kill bits to block bad items from running. The only time it is running will be when you check for updates. Read about it here
SpywareGuard - will not take up many system resources
ie-spyad - adds items to the Restricted Sites list for Internet Explorer. It is not a program that runs at all.
Google Toolbar - will only be running when Internet Explorer is being used.
Firefox - is an alternate web browser that can be used in place of Internet Explorer.

These programs are scanners that you should run every few weeks to check for updates and scan for malware. This would be the only time that they will be running.
Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
A2 Squared

Hope this helps to clarify the issue for you. :wavey:
