Hi katsrock,

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log if you are still in need. I guess you did scare a lot of people away. Kidding aside, I apologize for the tardiness of our reply. Your case must have fallen through the cracks. So now you have a guy who likes a challenge.

If you still need our assistance, please do the following:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. Go to the Tom Coyote Forums http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?
.Click on My Controls near the top middle of the window (make sure you have signed in first)
.On the left hand column, click "view topics"
.If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at that place in control panel, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification", By doing this, you will be notified as soon as I have posted a reply to your log.

3. DELETE your current version of HijackThis (It is in the wrong place)

4. Download the most current version of Hijackthis (v.1.99.1) to a folder of its own. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Please click on the "My Computer" icon, then the C: drive icon. Next Right click on the desktop and choose NEW from the list available then> Folder' and name the folder 'HijackThis'. The end result should resemble something like this C:\HijackThis\

B. Download Hijackthis from:HERE

C. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

D. Close ALL windows except HJT

E. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

F. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren
Thanks Trevuren,

Yes I still need help . Am using a backup computer as I have no internet access. Am downloading all programs and logs to disk from infected computer. Using backup to communicate to you. Am glad you enjoy a challenge, but I hope this proves no match for you! As I mentioned, no solved threads on FLSMNGR yet. In the time since I first posted the original log, I have tried a few things from the unsolved logs to try to defeat this (including LSP Fix). No luck yet. Here's the log:

Hi katsrock,

I may not be able to fix your problem but I sure can get rid of some really bad stuff.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. First to stop and disable the 2 following services:

O23 - Service: Loading Outpost Connections (KDE) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\System32\cmdtel.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Debug oupost relations (LAGOS) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\System32\ahtun.exe (file missing)

You will be looking for these and do them 1 at a time:

Service: Loading Outpost Connections (KDE)
Service: Debug oupost relations (LAGOS)

To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service.

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.
—————————————–
2. Now we need to work from the Command Prompt to DELETE the service

Go Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>Command Prompt

. A black box will appear with a flashing cursor. At the cursor, type cd.. then cd.. again and repeat the procedure until the writing preceeding the cursor says C:\>

. Now carefully type the following: sc delete servicename, where servicename is replaced by the one of the real service names that you will find below in red. Press ENTER.

servicename= KDE
servicename= LAGOS

. Repeat the same procedure using the second service name this time. Press ENTER.
.Close the Command Prompt box.
——————————————
Now to stuff we are more familiar with:

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {0F334C7C-AEDC-444F-9EEC-3EA589C478FB} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {0F334C7C-AEDC-444F-9EEC-3EA589C478FB} - (no file) (HKCU)
O23 - Service: Loading Outpost Connections (KDE) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\System32\cmdtel.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Debug oupost relations (LAGOS) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\System32\ahtun.exe (file missing)

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and delete them (if they are present):

C:\WINNT\System32\cmdtel.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\ahtun.exe

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally,RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards, and Good Luck

Trevuren
Done. Remaining symptoms include my wallpaper is a white screen but all desktop icons are still visible. There are a couple of web sites that have appeared on my favorite list. Internet connection returned briefly then stopped. When I turn off the computer my wallpaper returns briefly with no desktop icons just before the computer turns off.

That worked! My wallpaper is back with icons. Still no internet access. Before I performed some of your latest procedures, twice when I tried to access the internet, I was redirected to a ZoneAlarm window that said they detected something and denied me access to protect my computer. Don't remember all the particulars. BTW, I feel certain the "r.exe" is a contributing virus. It was created the same time and date the cmdtel, ahtun and flsmngr wrere created. Awaiting more words of wisdom.
Hi katsrock,

Glad to hear that your desktop is working.

As far as the file goes, go to Jotti's and upload the file and follow their directions.

If it is a virus, delete it and empty your recycle bin.

Then Disable and renable your System Restore

Keep me posted,

Regards,

Trevuren
Submitted r.exe for virus scan on jotti link. It found no virus… I'm not convinced. Norton still has auto protect off, cannot be changed to "on". E-mail scan still has "error". Virus attacking security programs? (Norton & Zone Lab) Zone Labs keeps sending me to this page and blocking internet: Notice from Zone Labs Internet Security This page is to notify you that ZoneAlarm has detected a problem with your installation, and therefore has restricted Internet access from your machine for your protection. Don’t panic! The step-by-step instructions listed here will help you to determine the problem and explain how to resolve the issue. Please print this page out first. If you don't have a printer setup or you use a network printer, please click here to get a word version of this page and save it. Note: If you have a Cisco VPN client installed and were re-directed to this page, please follow the directions here. Why did this happen? There was an error on your computer that is preventing your ZoneAlarm security product from properly starting. Because this condition is similar to a condition where a hacker is trying to disable your security, your ZoneAlarm security product has blocked would-be hackers by locking down your computer from outside Internet attacks. You should verify that your system is clean of any viruses or Trojans before restoring Internet access. Check with your antivirus support site for help and special tools to remove viruses. How long will it take to restore my access? It will take between 5 and 15 minutes to restore Internet access. Instructions to restore Internet access First try this: Restart your computer. (To do this, click Start, select Shut down, select Restart from the drop-down menu, and then click OK.) After restarting, check your Internet access. Try this up to three times to see if your Internet access is restored. If this does not restore your access, proceed to step B below. If above doesn’t work, do this: In your ZoneAlarm security product interface, go to the Overview Panel, click on the Preferences tab, and uncheck "load ZoneAlarm [product] at start-up" as shown in figure 1 below. Reboot your computer. (To do this, click Start, select Shut down, select Restart from the drop-down menu, and then click OK.) In this third step, you will be renaming your Internet logs folder. This simple step only takes a moment—just follow the instructions carefully below. Please note: Deleting your Internet logs is necessary to restore Internet access, but you will lose your ZoneAlarm security product settings as a result. a. Click on Start, select Search, and then For files or Folders. b. In the box titled "search for files or folders named:" type the following exactly, with quotes: "internet logs" c. In the box titled "look in:" select Local Harddrives… d. Now press Search Now e. In the results to the right you will see a folder called Internet Logs. Typically, this is located at: i. C:\Windows\Internet Logs (for Win 9x/XP) ii. C:\Winnt\Internet Logs (for Win 2000/NT) f. To rename the folder, simply right-click your mouse on the word "Internet Logs," select Rename and then type in a new name in the text field such as "oldlogs." Press Return when done. Reboot your computer. (See step 2 above) You should now have Internet access. (If you do not, click here.) To restore your security, install the latest version of your product by clicking the correct link below: ——————————————————————————– Figure 1: Unchecking "load at startup" as shown with the red circle below. Advanced instructions: You have been taken to this area if you have tried previous steps to restore Internet access and have been unsuccessful. Thank you for your patience. Removal will require using Safe Mode and editing the registry. If you are not comfortable using these, you should seek out someone more knowledgeable in their use. Please click here to view the instructions necessary to restore Internet access. This will take approximately 15 minutes. If you are unable to complete these steps yourself, you may contact Zone Labs Technical Support via fax at 415/343-0057. Someone will contact you as quickly as possible and in the order your fax was received and will follow the exact steps above with you by phone. ©1999-2005 Zone Labs LLC. All rights reserved. Help! Thanks in advance. katsrock
Hi katsrock,

Unfortunately this appears to bes a system configuration problem and out of my scope. I do strictly malware.

May I suggest that if you don't get satisfaction through Zone Alarm, that you try to get help at PCPitstop.

We got it clean of malware at least.

P.S. You may want to try uninstalling, then reinstalling your Symantec product in an attempt to rectify that problem?
