Hi mike 933

You have quite some infections. :( We will have to take it in steps to get rid of them. Do not lose heart if it takes quite a few posts to get rid of it all.

The first few instructions are general matters that pertain to every post. If there is a procedure that I ask you to do and you don't know how look at the HOW TO instructions and there is a good chance that you will find it there.

HOW TO Instructions:

Should you need instructions for:
Showing hidden files and folders in Windows.
Reboot in safe mode. If you have a keyboard with a "F Lock" key click it so that the "F" light above it is on when you start tapping the "F8" key.
How to print the fix instructions
Click the underlined links above.

How to unzip a downloaded zip file.
Place the zip file in the folder where you want the unzipped program to be.
If you are running Windows XP you simply right click the zip file and select "Extract Files".
For the other versions of Windows you will need a program like 7-Zip . Open 7-Zip. Navigate to to the downloaded zipfile and highlight it. Right click and select "Extract Here"

When asked to post a new HijackThis log please
Close all windows and browsers.
Find the HijackThis folder. Open it and double click "HijackThis.exe". Click "Do a system scan" and save a "logfile". (If Hijack this shows you a "Scan" button instead of "Do a system scan" that is OK. Just click it.)
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Click it. Click "Ctrl-A" (the "Ctrl" key and the "A" key at the same time) to highlight the whole log. Now click "Ctrl-C" to copy the text. Open this topic and click the "Add Reply" button at the bottom of the page. Paste the log into the window that opens up by clicking "Ctrl-V". Click "Add Reply" to post.

Preliminaries:

1. Please copy the instructions to a notepad or preferably print them.

2. Make sure to work through the fixes exactly as given and in the exact order they are mentioned below.

3. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

4. IMPORTANT. Must be done before start of cleanup.
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a permanent folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

a. Please go to your 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

b. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO. SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

Start the cleanup:

5. You have the Peper Trojan. It is a very stubborn infection which requires a specific tool to remove. There are two tools available. Please follow these instructions in order:

This tool does not require Internet Access to Clean:

a. Please Download PeperFix.exe ,

Reboot in Safe Mode

b. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

c. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

d. Run the tool a second time.

e. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

6. Click here to download the latest stand-alone version of CWShredder and run it, Click 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Do not be alarmed if it does not find anything. Reboot when done. If you have an earlier version on your computer please delete it.

Point 7, 8, and 9 are all done by using the "Add/Remove Programs". You need to reboot between each removal.

7. You have a Lop infection which is another stubborn infection. This is a trick that sometimes works.

a. Install MSN Messenger Plus3 with Sponsors here .
Install it with sponsors.

b. Go to Start –> Settings –> Control Panel –>Add/Remove Programs

c. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

d. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

e. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

f. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

g. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, restart your computer and, hopefully voila!

The next two are optional but recomended fixes

8. Do you use WildTangent on purpose? I see it in your log, but it's considered a resource hog and is slowing down your startup unnecessary. Decide if you want to keep it or not. If you decide to remove it, uninstall it by going to "Start" - "Control Panel" - "Add/Remove Programs".

9. In "Add/Remove Programs" remove: Viewpoint Manager (Considered "spyware")

10. Please download the latest version of Ad-Aware SE & Spybot Search & Destroy . Then follow the instructions in the links below to run the programs.
Spybot Tutorial
Ad-Aware Tutorial
Reboot after each Scan is finished to let the programs finish deleting what they found.

11. Now I would like you to do a virus scan at Panda free virus scan
Click "Scan your PC". In the Window that opens follow the instructions. Let Panda fix anything it finds.
If you get report of files that can't be cleaned / deleted please note the filenames and locations. Include that information in your next post.

11. Also run Trend Micro Houscall

12. Download a trial version of “Trojan Hunter” and run it to remove any traces of trojans. Select all your hard drives. Select full scan. When the scan is finished please save the log and copy it into your next post.

12. Can you find out and inform me in the next post what your DNS Server address settings should be. It should say in the information you got when you installed your internet connnection. Often it is "Obtain DNS Server address automatically". If you do not know or if you are unsure please call your ISP and find out. We will need to change the settings back to what they should be as they have been hijacked. Once we delete the settings given by the hijacker we need to enter the correct settings or you will lose your internet connection.

13. * Close ALL windows except HJT
* SCAN with HJT
* POST the new log in this thread using "Add Reply".
Thanks for your help Elrond. When I ran the PeperFix.exe, it came up with "No Peper Files Detected". I tried it twice after rebooting into Safe Mode. Should I continue on with the list or do I need to do something else. Also as far as Question 8, I do not use WildTangent. In fact I get an error when I restart that it can't load because it is missing a .dll. Thanks again.
Finish the first session. Here are the results:

DNS Server Configuration:

Configure Computer Settings with DHCP for Windows XP
Before you begin configuring your computer for DHCP, please unplug your cable modem power cord and disconnect the cable that goes from your modem to your computer. To configure your computer settings with DHCP for Windows XP operating systems:
1. Close all applications
2. Click Start and select Control Panel
3. Click Network and Internet Connections
4. Click Network Connections
5. Double-click the Local Area Connection Icon
6. The Local Area Connection Status window will appear
7. Click on Properties
8. On the General Tab, double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or highlight it and select Properties
9. Select the General Tab of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window
10. Make sure the radio buttons for Obtain an IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically are both selected and click OK
11. On the Local Area Connection Properties window select the Advanced tab
12. Make sure that in the Internet Connection Firewall section, Protect My Computer and Network by Limiting or Preventing Access to this Computer from the Internet is not checked. This disables the Windows XP built in firewall which may hinder the connection. You may re-enable it after troubleshooting or initial setup.
13. Click OK

On Number 8 in the session, WildTangent is not on the list of programs to add/remove, but I still get the following error when I restart the computer, "Error loading C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll
The specified module could not be found.

Thanks,

And let me know if you need any more information.

Mike
Hi mike933

Let's continue with the clean up.

1. Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a permanent folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it should not be run from the "Desktop". Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

a. Please go to your 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

b. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

2. Please go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a lightblue icon with a magnifying glass that can be difficult to see but the handle is red. Right click it and select settings. Uncheck "Load at startup" and "Enabled". It could interfer with the fixes.

3. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, and remove any one of these that you can find:

emsw
HelpExpress
tgkill
ComcastSUPPORT
Window Search
Window Searching
Lop.com
LOP SEARCH
Browser Enhancer
Ultimate Browser Enhancer

Let me know which ones you succeeded in removing.
Reboot after each uninstall.

4. Did you run CWShredder already? If not then:
Click here . Download the stand-alone version of CWShredder and run it, Click 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Do not be alarmed if it does not find anything. Reboot when done.

5. Your log and TrojanHunter still indicates that you have a Peper infection. Let's try this.

You have the Peper Trojan. It is a very stubborn infection which requires a specific tool to remove. There are two tools available. Please follow these instructions in order:

a. Download Newuninst.exe.

b. Run it with an active internet connection.

c. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

d. Run the tool a second time (with an active internet connection).

e. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

The second tool which does not require Internet Access to Clean is:

a. Please Download PeperFix.exe,

b. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

c. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

d. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

e. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

6. Did you exactly follow point 7 in my last post. Did it give any messages?
If you did not run it please:

When everything is complete, restart your computer.

7. Open HijackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only". (If HijackThis shows a "Scan" button instead of "Do a System Scan Only" that is OK. In that case click "Scan".) When the scan is finished put a check mark by the items that are listed in bold below. If you can not find an item, that is OK. Just continue but inform me with your next post. Do not click fix until instructed to do so:

The following items are OPTIONAL and can be fixed by putting a check mark by each line. By fixing it you can shorten boot-up time and free up resources. You will not harm your program by doing this and you will still be able to start it manually via the start-button. It is your choice, so you must decide whether you want to get rid of it or not.

Application Scheduler is installed along with RealOne Player and is running in startup, and is not needed. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player and consumes resources. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK
This is the item to check mark in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

This is optional but is unneeded at startup.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required anyway.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

CLOSE ALL PROGRAMS and BROWSERS that are running, except HijackThis and then click the "fix" button.

8. Reboot in Safe Mode.

9. Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders and if you can find them delete them:

C:\PROGRA~1\BENDHI~1<—- Folder (~1 means that the name starts with the caracatres shown but is more than 8 caractares long.)
c:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgkill.exe<—file
C:\WINDOWS\OYFLSYZC.exe<—file
C:\Program Files\WildTangent<—- Folder
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Dead List Log Grey<—- Folder
C:\WINDOWS\emsw.exe<—file
C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers<—- Folder
C:\install.cab<—file

Exit Explorer

10. Reboot in normal mode.

11. If you are hving problems connecting to the internet please check that the DNS Server Configuration is correct.

12. Please let me know what problems if any you are having with your computer. Give details.

13. * Close ALL windows except HJT
* SCAN with HJT
* POST the new log in this thread using "Add Reply"
End of Round 2.

Number 3: Only program that was on the list for me to remove was ComcastSUPPORT and I was able to remove that one.

Number 4: On the previous session I ran CWShredder.

Number 5: Ran PeperFix.exe again and it still says that it can't find any.

Number 6: I ran the MSN Messenger Plus3 during the previous session and it went as you described. No problems.

Number 9: None of the files or folders listed were found.

Congratulations and well done mike933, your log looks clean.

Now that your computer is free of malware, I want you to take some precautions to avoid being re-infected.

This is generic information. If something does not pertain to your version of Windows please just skip that instruction.

Settings and maintenance

1. Clean out temporary files.
Download System Security Suite . Place the zip file into a folder of its own. Extract it to this folder.

Run System Security Suite by clicking the 3S icon in program manager.
Under "items to clear" check mark all. Then click "clear selected items"
This will cause your system to reboot.
You should do this every few weeks to avoid buildup of unnecessary junk.

2. Clean Out System Restore. (Only ME and XP)
Malware could get backed up in System Restore.
For Win XP follow these instructions to delete all restore points.
1. Go to "Start" > "Control Panel".
2. Make sure the Control Panel is in "Classic View". If it is not, click "Switch to Classic View" towards the top-left of the screen.
3. Double-click "System" and go to the "System Restore" tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore" and click "OK" and then "Yes".

After restarting your computer you should turn it back on by following the above procedure and uncheck "Turn off System Restore".

You can find out more about this subject at
Managing Windows Millennium System Restore

or at

How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore

3. You reconfigured Windows to show hidden files and you should reset this to its original state useing the instructions from here except that
1. Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading put a mark for "Do not show hidden files and folders".
2. Uncheck "Display content of system folders"
3. Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.

4. Make your Internet Explorer more secure

a. Less restrictive but less secure:
Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more in
Internet Explorer Privacy & Security Settings
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you don't have to use it. Try a different browser like
Firefox . It is also worth trying
Thunderbird for controlling spam in your e-mail.

b. More secure but very restrictive.
This can be done by following these simple instructions that apply to all "Windows" except "Windows XP with SP2". In SP2 many of those setting are the default settings but check your settings anyhow. The settings can become restrictive but you should use them anyhow. If there are sites that will not show up right with those settings and that you rely on to be free of malware place them in the trusted zone.

1. Click "Start". Open "Control Panel".
2. Select the "Internet Options"
3. Select "Security" Tab and select the following settings.

* ActiveX controls and plug-ins
• Download signed ActiveX controls: Disable
• Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disable
• Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Disable
• Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Disable
• Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting: Disable

* Downloads
• Font Download: Disable

* Microsoft VM
• Java permissions: Disable Java

* Miscellaneous
• Allow META REFRESH: Disable
• Display mixed content: Disable
• Drag and drop or copy and paste files: Disable
• Installation of desktop items: Disable
• Launching programs and files in an IFRAME: Disable
• Navigate sub-frames across different domains: Disable
• Software channel permissions: High Safety
• Userdata persistence: Disable

* Scripting
• Active scripting: Disable
• Allow paste operations via script: Disable
• Scripting of Java applets: Disable

* User Authentication
• Logon: Prompt for username and password

4. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
5. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

These are a must to protect yourself from malware.
1. Get a good anti-virus if you don't have one. A lot of people like AVG .
KEEP IT UPDATED

2. Get a good firewall if you don't have one.
Many like ZoneAlarm. You can download a free copy here

Be restrictive with access to the internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not make the block permanent.

3. MOST IMPORTANT for all versions: You Need to keep “Windows” and "Internet Explorer” updated. Open ‘Internet Explorer” and go to”Start”> "Tools" > "Windows Update" or go to Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof you must keep it updated as well. Go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed. Update MS Office here.

4. Download and install “SpywareBlaster”
Run it. Click "Updates" at the left and click "Check for Updates". After updating click "Protection" at the left and towards the bottom click "Enable All Protection". You should now be protected from all known bad ActiveX. You should occasionally check for updates.

5. Download and install "SpywareGuard"

Further tools

I highly recommend downloading and installing the newest versions of “AdAware SE Personal” and “Spybot Search and Destroy”
After installing remember to update the definition files for each program.
I also suggest that you visit this website and follow the instructions on how to configure both programs for best detection. These instructions are the best even though they refer to a cleanup of an infected computer.

There are many other programs that will add extra layers of protection to your computer as well.
I recommend “IE-Spyad” By default, it is unzipped to "C:\ie-spyad". Find out how to install it by going to the "ReadMe.txt". You should occasionally get updates by using the bat file or by uninstalling and deleting the old files and returning to the site to get the new version.

A Trojan scanner would be also be helpful. You can download a trial version of “Trojan Hunter” and run it to remove any traces of trojans.

The ”a Squared” trojan Scanner has a free version. It is an onboard trojan scanner that is installed much like Spybot/AdAware but handles trojans. Nice to add to your armor if you wish.
Download free from “a Squared” (The download button is at the bottom of the page). Install it.
Run and activate your free version with a Squared and then select
Scan your computer for malware infections .
Then select any/all drives.
Finally Scan selected folders.

It is worth while to take a look at "So how did I get infected in the first place? for some good advice.

A good source of information about computer secutiy can be found at this website . ChrisRLG has been an Administrator and Classroom Teacher at Tom Coyote and today has his own forum.

(for Win XP with or without SP1) If you want to update Windows XP with SP2, you should know that there has been a small group of users who have had problems with it. The risks are the least if your computer is clean of malware and you are running an updated software firewall such as ZoneAlarm. You can download SP2 from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389
If you have a high-speed internet connection, you can let Windows Update do it. However if you have a dialup connection I would advise you to order the CD as the download is huge and will take a VERY long time to download. There has also been some reports that there is less problems when SP2 is installed from a CD.
You can get the CD here .

VERY IMPORTANT. Update all protective programs regularly - Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Do you are having any problem with your computer now. If so post the details in a new post.

Best of luck and clean computing.
